December 31. The last day of 2016. Wow! Where has this year gone?! Today was quite chilly and damp. Clouds hung around all day. No computer work today. Made sure things were ready for church tomorrow - chair out in living room so we don’t forget to take it, cards ready to go, offering ready. Sent my January project calendar off to Christy to be printed. Finished the last of the motifs for the tablecloth. Folded yesterday’s laundry and put it away. Looked for some pictures for a needlework project. The highlight of the day, of course, was talking with Daddy this afternoon. He was getting a cough. Said lots of people have colds, the weather has been so chilly and damp. There hasn’t been any more sunshine. He said that meetings are going well. Good attendance. A large number of young people. The young people wanted a continuation of the teaching on marriage so Amos is meeting with them on Wednesday evenings. Dallas and Elise were married on Thursday, praise the Lord. Dallas has waited patiently for the Lord to work things out in the hearts of relatives who were hesitant to give their permission. They had told him the middle of last year that they could get married this year. They kept their word - just a couple days before the year ended. It was a big celebration with almost the whole village there. (Please pray for God to bless their marriage and that they will serve Him together all their lives.) The young people came to Amos and Daddy with some concerns they want to talk about too, so Daddy still has some counseling work to do. “11In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will: 12That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.” Ephesians 1:11,12 Spiritual blessing number eight: We have obtained an inheritance. Just think, I have the privilege of being an heir of God and a joint heir with Christ. (Romans 8:17) January 1, 2017. A rainy New Year day. Praise the Lord for the rain! Christy and I were awakened at midnight to see the New Year in - a deafening boom like an explosion, and a few minutes later another one. (Somebody shooting a gun into the air? Nope, we learned that it is a type of fireworks that is shot from a cannon.) Off in the distance I could hear some fireworks. Connie said she never heard a thing, and she usually hears all the noises in the night. This morning I cooked oatmeal for my breakfast. After breakfast, I put the squash into the oven to cook so I would have something to eat this evening. It just barely got done before it was time to leave for church. We didn’t have to leave until 10:30 today as the first meeting was at 11:00, and the second was at 12:30 instead of an evening meeting this week. They had had a continental breakfast at 10:00. Pastor Ogle finished the book of James today, preaching on chapter 5, verses 16-20, but starting at verse 13 to get the whole context. His theme was “the Value of Relationships” and his objective “You must be willing to pray, share, and confront to help people in need.” “How important it is for us to have relationships where we can encourage one another.” In the afternoon meeting, he preached on “The Priority of the New Year” or “Benefits of the Word,” showing Scriptures that brought out various ways in which the word affects our lives, and emphasizing the importance of making Bible study a habit. Mary M was really grateful for her gift, and that made me thankful that I had spent the extra time to make it as nice as I could. She said it was worth all the time she had spent on making (or re-making) the curtains. “13In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, 14Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.” Ephesians 1:13,14 Spiritual blessing number nine: sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise. God promised me an inheritance, and He sealed me with the Holy Spirit as a pledge of that promise. The Holy Spirit is God’s private stamp in our hearts for security, to preserve us until we receive that inheritance He has promised to give us. The Holy Spirit is our assurance that there is a real inheritance waiting for us in heaven. The Holy Spirit will be our earnest until we enter on our inheritance, until the redemption of that which Christ has purchased for us is fully ours. It is so hard to imagine that God would give us such grand blessings. The inheritance is as good as ours - we are already blessed with ALL spiritual blessings.

December 30. About 4:00 this morning, we were all out of bed and wide awake. We had heard sirens screaming their way toward this part of the city, and soon we heard them coming to our street. Vehicles with flashing lights were right outside our house. I jumped out of bed to see what was going on, and there were emergency vehicles all up and down the road and on Calvary. The thing that caught my attention, though, was the bright blaze covering the front of the small house across the street next to Christine’s house. Oh, my! I hastened to get some warmer clothing on, plus socks and shoes. By the time I got down to Christy’s room where C&C were looking out Christy’s window, the big blaze had been put out. Our first concern was for Michelle and the two little ones. After a while, Connie and I put on heavy jackets and wandered outside. Christy had to start getting ready for work. One of the young ladies in the neighborhood went by, but she was too upset to talk. Christine came by following her and said that Michelle and the children had gotten out. Thank the Lord for that. This is the second morning this week that Christy has not been able to have her bath. Wednesday morning there was no hot water because Jason hadn’t finished fixing the water heater. And this morning, the water was too muddy after having been drawn out of the fire hydrants. But at least the people were safe, and not having a bath is a minor problem compared to having no home. When Christy was ready to go to work at 5:20, a couple of the emergency vehicles had left and Christy was able to get out with the van. Her car was locked in by two emergency vehicles. She did turn the van around on the grass first so she could go out forward as she had to go partly off the curb above the driveway. I was outside watching her as she left, and one of the fireman came by and said he would have been glad to move the vehicles. I thanked him, but told him it was okay for her to use the van today. After she left, I sat down and read my Bible a while. When I got sleepy, I went back to bed. Couldn’t get to sleep though, but was too tired to get up so figured I should at least rest. That was a good time for praying too. One thing that made it hard to go to sleep was that my feet had gotten cold. After my feet finally warmed up, I was able to get a little sleep. It was about 7:10 before I got up and started the day. I had been awakened off and on during the night too by scraping noises in the attic so between that and early awakening by sirens, I found it hard to concentrate properly today. It was a chillier morning - in the 30’s - and there was still a cold north wind. But there was sunshine to warm up the air a bit. I waited until it got into the 40’s before I started the laundry and then, as I usually do on cold days, I took out 3 or 4 items at a time to hang. Then came back inside to warm my hands. I had thrown a small piece of orange rope into the wash that I had taken off the horn I got at the thrift store and had used for making our winter wreath. When the laundry was done and I pulled out the clothes, the rope was wrapped up in my long-sleeved white shirt; and the shirt was adorned here and there with orange markings. Oops! Well that would have to be bleached after I was done hanging the other clothes outside. After the clothes had all been hung out in the nice sunshine, I put bleach water in a basin and put the shirt in it to soak. After a while, the orange turned to pink. And a couple hours later, the pink had turned to purple. But the color did not go away. Oh, well, I guess now I have an odd-looking “tie-dyed” shirt. We could see better this morning some of the damage the fire had done. Someone (the owner of the house?) came by in the morning and looked things over. Later another man came and boarded up the door and all the places where windows were broken out. We assume the house is beyond repair. We want to do something to help Michelle and the children, but did not see anyone today that we could talk to who would know where she is and what we can do for her. For computer time today, I went back to the beginning of Luke in the translation file and fixed up the spacing through chapter 4. Also deleted a bunch of e-mails and completed two Sunday school lessons. For relax time, I finished a crocheted rose I had started making yesterday. “9Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself: 10That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him.” Ephesians 1:9,10 Spiritual blessing number seven is that God has made known unto us the mystery of his will, which is, that God will gather together in one all things in Christ. The old hot water heater elements -- good and ready to be replaced. December 28. Up to the low 60’s today with nice sunshine.
Worked on a number of different small projects today. After making note of some prayer requests and reading some back newsletters, I deleted a bunch more e-mails. Sprayed matte coating on the painting I had done. Put another couple chapters of English Luke (chapters 10 and 11) in the translation file, got rid of several boxes of old cassette tapes, proofread the first chapter of The Isles Are Singing and sent it to Connie, completed chapter three and started on four, finished another large motif and a small motif for the tablecloth, called Daddy and enjoyed a little chat with him. I think that’s all. Jason said he would probably be back around noon today, but it was 5:00 before he arrived. He got the water tank cleaned out and new elements put in. What a mess. The burned out element was so warped, he almost couldn’t get it out and was about to tell our landlord they would have to buy a new water tank. We are thankful the tank is fixed now, and that we should have plenty of hot water in the kitchen and C&C’s bathroom. I was glad for the opportunity to talk with him just briefly before he left, give him a tract, and also give him a New Testament to keep in his truck. He said he has a preacher friend that he spends a lot of time with so we must pray that he will get saved. Daddy said that Owena had very heavy rains Sunday night, so heavy that people were going around to each other’s houses to make sure everyone was okay and that no landslides had washed any houses away. Daddy was thankful that David had patched up the roof and that no rain leaked into the house. He said even the topsoil on the airstrip didn’t get washed away. He was thankful for the day of sunshine that followed that big rain, and said that the skies cleared off last night also and it looked like it would be sunny today (Thursday over there). “In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace.” Ephesians 1:7 Two more spiritual blessings in this verse: The first, I have redemption through Christ’s blood. The ransom for my soul was paid in full, and the price was Jesus’ precious blood. There was no other way that I could be delivered from the bondage of sin and the penalties of God’s violated law. The second blessing, I have forgiveness of sins. I deserve to pay the penalty of death for my sins, but I have been granted a full pardon. This too is through the shed blood of Christ, for without the shedding of blood there is no remission (see Hebrews 9:22). Redemption and forgiveness - what wonderful riches bestowed upon us because of his grace! December 29. The Lord sent quite a bit of rain during the night. Christy’s and Connie’s clothes got a good rinsing out there on the clothesline. This morning the sun came shining through, and soon a blustery, cold north wind began to blow. It didn’t take long for those wet clothes to dry. Today I finished another large and another small motif on the tablecloth. Only three more of each to go. Also painted a cross for Connie to use for a project. Finished putting the English Luke in the translation file up through chapter 12. That is as far as we have gotten in checking the Pidgin. Finished a Sunday school lesson and started on another. Wrote some e-mails. Made some banana tofu pudding. “Wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence.” Ephesians 1:8 This is spiritual blessing number six that I see -- that God has given us enough and to spare of wisdom and prudence, that is, spiritual wisdom and moral insight. Not the wisdom of this world, but the wisdom which far exceeds the wisdom of this world, the wisdom that can only come from God. December 26. It’s Monday, although it seemed like Saturday all day with Christy home from work. I wondered several times why she wasn’t washing clothes. :-) This morning, we cleaned house a bit. I also tried to write the Bible verse on the painting I did yesterday afternoon. Forgetting, that I had used oil pastel for the white, I found that I couldn’t write over it so could not complete the verse. Water colors wouldn’t paint over the part of the verse that did get printed so I got some acrylic paints today (had already planned to get some anyway) and will repaint the background and do the verse in a different fashion. Our landlord and wife came at 10:00 as they said they would. He tried himself to clean out the water heater in the kitchen, but did not have the right tools so ended up calling the plumber who will come later. Also measured the outside doorway off the kitchen so they can put a storm door on it, and then we can let sunshine in on cold, but sunny days. I was surprised when they told us that they had a new baby, now a month old. He was 8 pounds when he was born. They left him with her mom today, but she showed us some pictures of him, so precious. Gave them a little gift before they left - the blue baby blanket and hat I had crocheted about a year ago, and the blue bunny that goes with it. By the time they left, it was almost lunch time. I went ahead and ate early and then had nap so we could get out to shop before it got too late. I was glad I remembered (before we left) that the rent and phone bill had to be paid. By the time we made a stop at Verizon, then Dollar Tree, WalMart, and Aldi, it was going on 5:00 when we got home. Rain had just started so we were glad to get here while the rain was just light. “Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will.” Ephesians 1:5 Another of the spiritual blessings with which God has blessed us is adoption. God predetermined to adopt us as His children. This too comes by Jesus Christ and His finished work on the cross of Calvary. Because of Christ, God adopted me as His own child, and did so according to the good pleasure of His will. It was God’s desire and delight to choose me as His child. It didn’t have to do with my will, but with His will. It didn’t have to do with any merit of my own, but with His kindness and good pleasure solely. I’m so glad to belong to God’s family. Thank you, Lord Jesus! December 27. The Lord gave us a nice warm day today, in the upper 60’s by mid-afternoon. Christy was back to work early this morning after a four-day holiday. Yesterday, I finished up both my grains and my soup so had to do some cooking today. This morning, I fixed quinoa and later made blueberry muffins. I didn’t get the soup made until afternoon as we thought the plumber was going to come in the morning. He never did call back to let us know when he would be coming, but he showed up just when I was making the soup for my supper. :-) Today I also worked on another Sunday school lesson, wrote and deleted e-mails, did some painting, and helped Christy finish the tea cup puzzle. This afternoon, Connie and I enjoyed being outside together. We raked up a couple big piles of leaves and dumped them out front by the road. The leaf truck came along just as we were dumping the first load. The plumber left without fixing the hot water heater because he needed to turn off the water and could not get the cover open. He will come back tomorrow, and the city is supposed to come and open the water up and turn it off for him. “To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.” Ephesians 1:6 The third spiritual blessing that I see in the book of Ephesians is this: we have been accepted in the beloved. God accepts me because of what His beloved Son has done for me. I don’t have to do anything to try to make myself acceptable to God. As a matter of fact, I can’t do anything to make myself acceptable to God. Christ has done it all! Praise God, I’m accepted in the Beloved! Hello, everyone! Here is a prayer request from Dad.
Dad has only two more days left in the Owena village. It has been raining and raining, and the airstrip is really wet. Please pray for a couple sunny, dry days so the airstrip can dry up and the plane can get in. Thanks. First of all, Lewis wants to thank all of you who have been praying. Yesterday (Thursday in PNG) was their last day of special meetings. In the morning service, they had planned a question/answer time (requested by the church), a time of testimonies (also requested), and voting on ordaining Mike for the ministry. That would be followed by the baptism of a teen who was saved this past week and a fellowship dinner. The afternoon meeting was planned for Mike’s ordination. Mike is a young man who set his heart to serving the Lord ever since he was saved in 2011. Over the past couple years, he has helped with teaching/preaching in some of the church meetings, particularly Saturday morning prayer meeting, and also teaches Sunday school.
Lewis said he himself has preached 31 times since he arrived in Owena. The people are so hungry for teaching and just keep begging “More, more.” They told him how grateful they are for the written material (lessons and books) that we have been providing. Otherwise they have no resources for special study. A few words on the written page are worth 1,000 oral words which may soon be forgotten or confused in their thinking. Lewis has five more days left in the village. He plans to fly out to town on Tuesday the 10th which will give him two days before his return flight. He asks that we pray for dry weather before the flight so the airstrip won’t be too wet (they are still getting an abundance of rain), and also pray that someone will have some loading for the plane to bring into Owena village or a neighboring village. If the plane has to come in empty, Lewis will have to pay for a charter which would be quite expensive. Lewis is due back in NC on Saturday, the 14th. It seems like he has been gone a looooong time, but we thank the Lord for making it possible for him to go. Lewis has been encouraged to see the Lord work in hearts through the preaching of the word and also through counseling those with special needs, and Glory Independent Baptist Church has been encouraged and comforted by his coming. Praise God for His great goodness and abundant mercy. May the Lord bless each of you who have had a part through prayer. Judy, for all of us December 24. It was a cloudy day with spring-like temperatures. Computer time this morning was spent on Sunday school lessons for GIBC. I also finished the winter wreath and hung that up on the front door. Went through a box of tracts and other religious literature, put some aside in a small box for us to use, and some in a bag to go to the thrift store. This afternoon, I did a little crocheting before talking with Daddy. It was a blessing to hear a good report of the youth meetings. They did an extra meeting on Friday evening which lasted 2 1/2 hour as there were a number of testimonies about how the meetings helped them - Philemon, Matthew, Tomas, David, Mike. Can’t remember if there were others. Daddy said he has also been preaching both meetings on Sundays. They are going to discuss today (after the church meetings) about changing the times or dates of the New Year meetings. Daddy asked that we continue to pray for sunshine. They have only had a few hours of sunshine since he has been there. After talking with Daddy, I prepared a pot of kale and green beans and put them on to cook. While they were cooking, we decorated the cookie sweaters Christy made from the kit she got as a gift from work. “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ.” Ephesians 1:3 God has blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places. How was He able to do that, to add such blessings to me, a sinner? in Christ. If it hadn’t been for the willing sacrifice of His Son as our sin-bearer, we would have no blessings at all. I do not deserve any blessings. Yet I have all. All the spiritual blessings that God wants me to have. All, because of Christ. Thank you, Lord, oh, thank you. As I walk with the Lord, there are many earthly blessings too. But the spiritual blessings…. He has given ALL and given freely. December 25. It was very warm last night and was around 53º when the daylight came up this morning. It got up to 67º by afternoon. What a lovely day! This morning, I completed another Sunday school lesson and also found pictures of sheep and shepherds to start on a book called “Wasman wantaim Sipsip” (“The Pastor and the Flock”). “According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love.” Ephesians 1:4 Verse three of chapter one brought to mind that we have been blessed with ALL spiritual blessings. Many of these blessings are enumerated throughout the book of Ephesians. The first one is found right here in verse four - I was chosen in Christ before the foundation of the world. I was chosen to be holy and without blame before Him in love. Because He loved me, He made me holy. Because He loved me, I am unblemished, faultless in His eyes. Praise God! December 23. Today is our 47th anniversary. We have to celebrate apart this year, but I’m glad that Daddy has the opportunity to be with the Owena people and help them with their spiritual needs. It was nice to receive a text from Pat today with anniversary wishes. Only got down to about 40º this morning, and rose to mid-50’s during the day. There were two loads of laundry to do today, and the machine wanted to shake and rattle. It took a little longer than usual to get them hung out because the air was nippy. I just took a few clothes out at a time to hang up, then came back in to warm my hands before doing a few more. In between times, I saved the files I had Christy send me because I need the information to do the Sunday school lessons. Then I started looking for the Bible verse the children will be memorizing in the next lesson. Finally found it and started on the lesson. Around 11:00, Christy and I took all the “get rid of” stuff over to Crossroads Thrift Store. Found a couple bags to buy for making blessing bags for the homeless, and also found a circular horn which I thought would make a good winter wreath. Worked a little more on the Sunday school lesson after lunch; then had nap; and then started working on a beaded crocheted garland to go on the wreath. Bought a long string of silver beads at the Hospice Thrift Store last week, and that is what I am using. Still have to finish the garland, but I cut up pieces of blue bubble paper and tied them onto the horn for the wreath background. After supper, I got the clothes in and then finished up the Sunday school lesson I had been working on. “But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.” Galatians 6:14 The cross of the Lord Jesus Christ is my only glory. It was by His cross that the world was crucified unto me and I unto the world. Therefore I no longer must walk the way the world walks, for I now have new life in Christ. December 21. Winter solstice. What a lovely day the Lord gave us today! In the low 20’s and light dusting of frost early this morning, but warmed up to the mid-50’s by noon. Today was declared a work day. Most of the morning was spent in the kitchen. Cooked a pot of rice and cut up veggies to make rice stir fry which I’ll make tomorrow. Cut up carrots and celery, ready for preparing the next pot of soup - tomorrow. Made a large pot of herb tea. Baked a squash. Besides kitchen duty, I also put away the autumn décor, changed the tablecoth in the dining room, and reorganized the living room to make room for the portable (infrared) heater because the wall unit created too large a utility bill this month. For sit-down time, I finished the last large motif and the last three small motifs of row five of the heirloom tablecloth. Just one more row to go. Then I’ll tuck in the 166 ends before I do the border. :-) The best sit-down time was spent talking with Daddy. I am thankful that he is keeping well. He said they did have 24 hours without rain, and the airplane was able to get in yesterday. They were only able to bring in a 20-litre drum of fuel so he will need to use it sparingly. But at least he has some fuel, and he is thankful for that. The youth meetings are going well. He did say that Tomas’s father is expected to die any time. If he dies close to or during the New Year meeting time, that could have a big effect on how much time they are able to spend in meetings. December 22. Praise the Lord for another beautiful day. Mid-thirties over night but mid-sixties this afternoon. Busy in the kitchen again this morning. Finished making the rice stir fry, and then cooked a pot of carrot soup. For sit-down time, I finished a mending job and also made another motif for the tablecloth. Then I did up the dishes because we had dirtied quite a few pots and pans. This afternoon, I wrote an update on Daddy for our church’s email list and sent a text to a friend. Then finished another sewing project - a cover for my church chair. Had been itching to get outside for a while so went out and raked up some leaves. Filled the recycle trash bin and took it out front where I dumped the leaves into a pile on the ground for the leaf truck to pick up. “9And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. 10As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.” Galatians 6:9,10 Sometimes we get weary and faint as we walk this road on earth, but we have been commanded not to get tired of doing good. There is a time of reaping, and it will come in its time. As James 5:7 says, "Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain." A seed when planted does not spring up and bear fruit over night. We must wait patiently for that seed to grow and bear fruit. We need to keep on doing good to everyone and especially to fellow-saints. December 19. A cloudy, chilly day with a north wind blowing. Cooked a pot of kamut grain for breakfast, but it was after 9:00 before it was done cooking so it became an early lunch instead, and breakfast was a smoothie. Most of the rest of the morning was spent writing e-mails. Also got this past week’s journal notes ready and sent them off to Connie. After nap this afternoon, I started looking at the Sunday school lessons to see what needs to be done. Then Christy and I went off to do shopping. I didn’t really have much shopping to do but wanted to get a new screw for my glasses at the vision center in WalMart. We never got to WalMart, however. We had heard lots of sirens just before we went out, and when we got out to the highway, traffic was backed up about to Pegrams. We figured there must be an accident at the intersection ahead. At least the traffic was moving, though very slowly. We finally got to the left turn lane, and Christy pulled into it so we could go to Aldi first. We were thankful that the accident was not at that intersection, but at the next one (Earl Road). There was no traffic going beyond that intersection, except to turn off onto Earl Road and on-coming traffic had basically stopped east of the intersection. When we got onto the upper portion of Earl Road near Aldi, more traffic than usual was coming up, and traffic going down was backed up. We did our little bit of Aldi shopping and headed back home. Will go to WalMart tomorrow or Wednesday. When we got home, I got one Sunday school lesson done for Owena. Need to get a set done quickly as Mike is running short. “20I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. 21I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.” Galatians 2:20,21 How I need to be reminded often that I’ve been crucified to the world, the old life, myself, sin; and that the life I live now, I live by the faith of God’s Son. How thankful I am that He loved me and gave himself for me! How grateful I am that righteousness does not come by the law! I would never attain unto righteousness. And what need would there have been for Christ to die if I could attain righteousness by the law? Thank you, Lord Jesus, for loving me and giving yourself for me and for making me righteous. December 20. Another cloudy day with north winds and temps in the 40’s. Did more e-mail and letter-writing this morning, plus some research looking for a good picture of a cross or the crucifixion, something that I can follow to do a painting. Also started another Sunday school lesson. Following afternoon nap, I swept and spot-treated the kitchen floor. I don’t know where all the dust comes from, but it keeps on coming back. At 3:15, Ellen came by to pick up Christy and me and take us to WalMart since we didn’t get there yesterday. We went to the vision center first where I had the screw tightened on my eyeglasses, and Christy had her eyes dilated to be checked for cataracts, etc. and then looked at new glasses. While Christy was at the vision center, I did my shopping and hers and Connie’s shopping. Elllen did some shopping as well. We all finished about the same time and met at the front entrance after checking out. “1Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage…. 13For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.” Galatians 5:1,13 |
