September 1. The morning stayed cool, and we kept the fire going until about noon. Before lotu this morning, I practiced keyboard. I forgot to practice yesterday, and the students are going to be learning parts to a “new” song this week — ”Grace Greater Than Our Sin.” At least half the congregation were quite late for lotu this morning. It was 11:00 or so, and the song service had already ended. Daddy preached on “not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together.” In the afternoon, Mike preached in Amos’s place since Amos still wasn’t feeling well. He did come to the meeting, but he was not up to preaching. Mike also preached on the church—”The purpose for the church meeting together.” Following afternoon lotu, I washed my hair and then worked more on the Galatians Bible study notes. After supper, I wrote an e-mail. Then I did the dishes, and afterward took a bath, this time soaking for a while in the new tub basin that Daddy bought for me. It felt good to soak for a while. “Serve the LORD with gladness….” Psalm 100:2a

August 30. A chilly and mostly cloudy day with brief periods of rain. It was a blessing to hear Elias’s and Judy’s testimonies of salvation in Bible class this morning. While the students were doing their math lesson, I finished a sewing project I had started fixing yesterday evening. After school, Anna Jean filled the washing machine, and Mike and Elias had several jobs to do. The first was to get rid of a rat we heard in the wall over my desk in the office. It was easiest to open the wall from the meeting room side. Elias started on that job while Mike was still finishing up something in school. As soon as he pulled the top corner of the wall down, the rat took off in a flash. There in between the office wall and meeting room wall was a nest. No babies in it yet. She must have been getting close to having them as we heard her crying. That’s how we knew she was in there. Dallas took the nest out, and he and Mike put the wall back together. Then the rat started working its way back across the office between the silver paper and the roof toward her next area. Daddy tried to hit her with the broom, but she got away into the meeting room. Dallas and Mike saw her and tried to get her too. On one whack that Mike had at her, she fell down inside the east wall. They couldn’t find her after that. If we start smelling death odor in a couple days, we’ll know that she died. If not, maybe she got outside somehow and took off. Hopefully, if she is still alive, she got a good enough scare to stay away. A lot of mess fell down from the nest area onto my desk from which we had removed all papers, computer, and other things ahead of time. I swept it all off and then disinfected it before putting stuff back. So that was the end of the rat chase. After that, Mike and Elias (Dallas) went outside and chopped firewood and then finished cutting the grass. And Daddy and I went for a nap. This afternoon, I fixed a dress that needed a small repair, cleaned the chalkboard, finished writing Monday’s lesson plans, and made a couple changes in the song sheet I had done yesterday and proofread the first lesson in Galatians. This evening, I put bath water on to heat while we were eating supper and had my bath as soon as supper was over as it was already getting cold before we even had supper. Then I proofread the Galatians lesson and made the student copy. Afterward I washed the dishes and then printed out five copies of the gospel of Matthew so the men can finally start checking that. Had a little trouble with the printer before the job was done. It was flashing red and yellow, and I didn’t know what was wrong with it. Nothing came up on the screen until I exited out of the file I was printing. Oh, I see. Change toner cartridge. Okay. That presented a little problem too. The new toner cartridge is generic, and there were no instructions with it. It took us a while to figure out how to put the new one in. Praise the Lord, we finally got it up and working again so we could finish the printing. We’ve been having small, evening invasions of giant crickets lately; and this evening, Daddy killed eleven of them that were flying around the house. Now the day is ended and we are ready to have our devotions together and head to bed. Good-night, all. “1A Psalm. O sing unto the LORD a new song; for he hath done marvellous things: his right hand, and his holy arm, hath gotten him the victory. 2The LORD hath made known his salvation: his righteousness hath he openly showed in the sight of the heathen…. 4Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all the earth: make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise. 5Sing unto the LORD with the harp; with the harp, and the voice of a psalm. 6With trumpets and sound of cornet make a joyful noise before the LORD, the King. 7Let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein. 8Let the floods clap their hands: let the hills be joyful together….” Psalm 98:1-8 August 31. Last day of August. Where is this year going in such a hurry? It was a day of mixed sunshine, clouds, and rain. Amos wasn’t in lotu this morning as he is sick with a bad boil from a stick that went into his finger. After lotu, Daddy showed those who came one of the crickets he killed last night. The people said that they eat them, and they taste good. The crickets make a nest in the ground, and when the people hear them singing, they dig into their nest and find lots of those large crickets. They eat the little ones too. They’re of the same family, but the little ones are black, and the bigger ones are brown. After that, Daddy turned on the generator and Sunny did the laundry. Mike and Daniel and Daddy worked in the bedroom, putting up more plywood on the walls. There is just a little bit left to do. Dallas and his wife and Mike’s wife and the children all worked out in the yard. (Well, the children didn’t really do much work; they just played.) They raked up the grass that Dallas and Mike had been cutting during the week, and they pulled a lot of weeds, and the yard looks so nice. Afterward Elise got some salt and soap and a lollipop for Dalista. Taqita got yarn and soap and lollipops for each of her children. After Sunny hung out the clothes, she had a cup of coffee, and then peeled and cut up kaukau (a type of white sweet potato) for me which I baked in the oven for our dinner. It tasted so good. Also I cut up and cooked the other piece of chicken with our last bulb onion, and made a gravy so we had chicken gravy to go on our kaukau. Leftover greens was our vegetable. Sunny left after sweeping the floor. While Sunny was washing clothes, I did some work in the computer while the generator was on. Started on the next Bible lesson for school. Just before Sunny left, I cut a piece of linoleum to fit one end of the top shelf of the kitchen cupboard and did some snipping here and there to fit it around the frame parts of the cupboard. Before the morning was over, we were having rain showers, and the clothes were getting a little extra rinse. I ran out and brought in our bedsheet and pillow cases, and hung them in the schoolroom, hoping they would be dry by nap time. They were, praise the Lord! By dinner time, the sun had come back out, and all but a couple of the clothes were dry before we had our nap. After nap, I worked for a while again on the Bible lesson. Afterward, I had a fruit snack. Gathered up the trash and took it out to burn while Daddy and I enjoyed the fresh air and sunshine for a while. At supper time, I was looking at the picture of the rye cracker on the Rye-Vita box. The cracker had cream cheese and avocado on it, and I mentioned to Daddy how good it would taste to have some avocado on my crackers. He wondered what happened to Kristina’s avocado tree as she always used to bring us avocadoes. Shortly after supper, when Daddy went down to start the generator, who should be coming along but Kristina with some avocadoes. Thank you, Lord, for this special blessing. Kristina said that the eighth or ninth month is usually when the tree bears. She also brought a nice pineapple which we can’t eat, but we bought it to put in the offering tomorrow. When I was done doing dishes this evening, I cut another piece of linoleum for the other end of the top shelf of the cupboard. This one was a bit more tricky to snip and make fit as there were pipes to fit it around. But praise the Lord, it turned out looking nice; and now all the pots and pans and a few other things are back in their places in the cupboard instead of resting in boxes under the kitchen table. Then it was time to sit down a while so wrote in my journal before getting a sponge bath. Had a snack after bath, and then came back to do a bit more work in the computer. “2The LORD is great in Zion; and he is high above all the people. 3Let them praise thy great and terrible name; for it is holy…. 5Exalt ye the LORD our God, and worship at his footstool; for he is holy…. 9Exalt the LORD our God, and worship at his holy hill; for the LORD our God is holy.” Psalm 99:2-9 August 28. Rain last night, but a nice dry and sunny day today, except for a few sprinkles of rain this afternoon. It was a lovely day for hanging out the laundry. I helped Judy with the hanging as it was getting late and it was lotu morning. Gibson had charge of lotu this morning and did a pretty good job on the topic of loving one another, especially other believers. Then it was time for school — learning to multiply and divide compound metric measures. That took the whole class time. In English, they just finished the exercises for the chapter review, and tomorrow they will start studying for the test. The rest of the morning until about 12:30 was given to history, doing the study exercises and then map work. After dinner, Daddy and I brought the clothes in off the line and then had our nap. Then I finished up tomorrow’s lesson plans, cleaned the chalkboard, wrote some more math exercises on it, and worked on getting Matthew ready for printing until the computer battery ran low. Had plenty of time left before supper to sort and wash the greens that were brought to us today. After supper, I cut up the greens and set them on to cook. Then did the dishes. Worked on Matthew for a while. Had a bath and a snack. Worked a little more on Matthew. August 29. The Lord sent us lots of rain today, and it is quite chilly this evening. I was hoping for a good bath this evening, but it doesn’t look like it is going to happen. I’m thankful that there have been no fires for a couple days, and my eyes feel so much better. In math class this morning, I shared with the students what I had learned yesterday evening while working on the dictionary for the gospel of Matthew. While searching for meanings for talent and pence, I found some very interesting and thought-provoking information. In the second half of chapter 18, when the king comes to take account of his servants, a servant who owed 10,000 talents was brought to him. I was surprised to learn that a talent of silver weighed about 45 kilograms (or 100 pounds), and a talent of gold weighed 91 kilograms (or 200 pounds). That means that the servant owed 450,000 kg (or 1,000,000 pounds) of silver or 910,000 kg (or 2,000,000 pounds) of gold (whichever type he owed), a debt that was nearly impossible for him to pay. When he fell down before his lord and begged him to be patient, his lord forgave him that huge debt. But then that servant found a fellow-servant who owed him 100 pence. A pence, in contrast to the talent, weighed only 3.898 grams (or 0.1375 ounces). I rounded off the amount to 4g (or 0.14 oz.); but considering that, this servant owed the forgiven servant only 400 grams (or 14 ounces) of money. That is only 0.4 kilograms or less than one pound of money. And yet the forgiven servant refused to have mercy and compassion on the servant who owed him such a minute amount compared to what the forgiven servant owed the king. That servant owed the king 1,125,000 times as much as the other servant owed him. No wonder the king was wroth. And the comparison is that the King of kings has forgiven us such a great debt of sin, should we not forgive the sins of those who trespass against us? Their sins against us are so small in comparison to the debt that we owed to the King of kings, and that we could never pay, and that he so lovingly forgave because the debt has been paid for us through His Son. It was an interesting math lesson, but more than that a good lesson in forgiveness. Daniel came today and made a small stand for my wash tub so now sometimes I should be able to sit for my bath. This afternoon, after finishing up lesson plans, I looked for the music to “Grace Greater than Our Sin” and was thankful to have found it. The students have been learning to sing the song, but they want to learn the parts so I needed to find the music. Next week, we can start learning the parts. I also found the music to “My Wonderful Lord” which they have been wanting to learn. It is just a short chorus, but I couldn’t remember exactly how the music went. Got the “Grace” song all fixed up in a word file, and this evening, I copied it onto a flash drive so I can print it from Daddy’s computer. I was very glad that Daddy thought ahead this afternoon when it started raining hard, and he filled several buckets with clean water. The water coming through the pipes from the spring did get very dirty after that so I was thankful to have clean water set aside for washing dishes this evening. After washing dishes, I worked on journal notes and then more on the dictionary for Matthew. August 26. How thankful we were for some rain this morning! It seemed to have washed away a lot of the smoke, and my eye felt much better this morning. By afternoon, though, the rain had stopped, and there were more fires on the mountains, sending up billows of smoke which made their way this direction. We closed all the north and west windows which helped to keep down the smoke in the house a bit, but definitely didn’t eliminate it all together. The Lord is sending us more rain this evening. In music class, we just sang from the book, rather than my playing the keyboard. They sang a couple familiar songs, and then we sang a couple new ones so they can start learning some of the other songs in the book. After recess, we worked on a new math lesson on multiplying and dividing English measures. It is a bit harder than adding and subtracting, and the book doesn’t give enough practice in learning them or enough exercises to help remember how to do them. So we did the written exercises for more practice; and this evening, I made up a page of written exercises to take the place of the ones in their lesson. In English, they wrote imperative and exclamatory sentences, or tried to anyway. They especially had a hard time with exclamatory. They do not have any such thing in Owena so we will need a lot more practice. Then we started on chapter review, working toward a chapter test. History was a bit easier. Gave back their tests first and went over a few of the questions. Then they read just a few pages of the next chapter and wrote definitions for vocabulary words. They finished a few minutes early so we were able to get to nap a few minutes earlier. After nap, I washed my hair, cleaned the chalkboard, wrote English exercises on large pieces of paper as there is not room on the chalkboard, wrote lesson plans, got carrots peeled and sliced and ready to cook, and made spaghetti for Lewis’s supper. I had a few carrots and a bowl of soup for my supper. After supper, Magaret came by. Magaret has had so many struggles since being saved—from an unsaved husband and other family members as well. I spent some time seeking to comfort her and then praying with her. After she left, I did dishes (and there were lots of them—the big pressure cooker and the blender from last night from pureeing the soup, and several pans from cooking this evening and earlier today, besides the plates and things). After that, I wrote John 3:16 (in Owena) and some math exercises on the chalkboard, got a song sheet ready to print for page 10 in our song book, got math exercises ready to print, printed them, wrote a short e-mail to Christy, and last of all wrote in my journal. August 27. Today was another busy day. I was thankful that the students were all on time for school today. We finished Sóni 3:16 and then worked on memorizing it. Also sang it. Then we started the new Bible lesson. In music class, we sang some new-to-them songs from our song book. In math class, they finished learning how to multiply and divide English measures and did some written exercises. In English class, they continued the review of chapter 1. And, in history, we went over together the pages they had read yesterday. After nap, I finished writing tomorrow’s lesson plans, erased the chalkboard, wrote math practice exercises on the chalkboard to teach multiplying and dividing metric measures. Then we had supper, and I did the dishes and had a bath. I had just started doing dishes this evening when Miriam came to visit. Appreciate Daddy’s finishing the dishes for me so I could visit with Miriam. She stayed quite a while, and I enjoyed the time with her. I don’t get to see her very often. A number of other folks came and went while she was here. Erisa came for a flex card and some ibuprofen. Others brought phones to be charged, and one person brought eggs. Praise the Lord for supplying us with eggs. Prayed with Miriam before she left. Then reheated the bath water and enjoyed my bath. Then I had a snack, photocopied maps of Asia for history class, and read the e-mails that came in this evening. Then I did more work on getting Matthew ready for printing. “1O come, let us sing unto the LORD: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation. 2Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms. 3For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods. 4In his hand are the deep places of the earth: the strength of the hills is his also. 5The sea is his, and he made it: and his hands formed the dry land. 6O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the LORD our maker. 7For he is our God; and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand….” Psalm 95:1-7 August 25. The Lord gave us another dry day today, and mostly sunshine, with periods of clouds. There were more fires on the mountains and more smoke and ashes coming into the house. My eye was quite irritated, so I only worked at the computer about an hour this afternoon, trying to get the gospel of Matthew ready to print so the men can proofread it. It was pancake day, and I was thankful that we had a ripe popo so I could cook up a small portion to put on my pancakes along with some banana. I had only cooked three pancakes and had just done Daddy’s eggs and put more pancake dough in the pan when I noticed that the flame was getting lower and lower. Oh, oh! Gas is running out. The pancake in the pan did get done, but it is quite pale. As soon as Daddy changed the gas tank, we were back in business again. After breakfast this morning, Daddy tried once again to send the e-mails; and, praise the Lord, all three e-mails went out. People were here much earlier than usual for lotu so we were able to start earlier. Dallas came at least twenty minutes early to practice for the special music today. The rest of them were here by a little before 10:00, and we practiced our two songs. It wasn’t long after that that Dallas started the song service. Daddy preached this morning, starting the lesson on meeting together with the church. This afternoon, Amos preached on the fate of the rich who have no thought for God. Following the afternoon lotu, Amos, Philemon, and Tomas stayed around for quite a while and talked. Then I worked on the Matthew file and by the time the computer battery ran low, it was supper time. Did the dishes right after supper; and as soon as I had finished, it was time for Daddy to turn on the generator so I started right in pureeing the soup I had cooked yesterday. After that, I wrote in my journal, had a bath, had a snack, and worked more on Matthew. August 23. Thank you, Lord, for giving us another dry day. In Bible class, the students wrote the good copy of their testimonies this morning. While they were working on that, I sanded down the desk extension that Daniel had built in the office and then covered the desk with a piece of floor mat. I let the students go overtime, into music class time, so they could finish their testimonies. Then I asked for two volunteers to give their testimonies in class a week from today. Right after that, we practiced a couple songs that the students would like to sing on Sunday “Happy I Am His” and “I’m Going to Work.” We had time to sing a couple more short songs after that before recess. They finished up their math lesson after recess. There was still time left for math class, but we didn’t start a new lesson today. We just went right to English class. That way they would have more time to do their history test. History test was the last thing on the schedule for the day, and for the week. After school, Anna Jean filled up the washing machine so it is ready for her to wash clothes in the morning; Mike and Dallas pumped diesel into the small drum and also put diesel in the generator; and Dallas chopped up some small pieces of firewood for kindling. While they were doing that, I graded the history tests. After nap, I wrote Monday’s lesson plans and put some math exercises on the chalkboard. Then I did the final proofreading of the August newsletter and made jpeg copies to send to Christy. This evening, I wrote an e-mail to C&C and attached the newsletter, but Digicel is having a hard time getting it off into space. August 24. Praise the Lord for another nice day. Slept in a little bit late this morning so didn’t get to have breakfast until after lotu. Lotu actually started quite a bit earlier than usual. I guess folks wanted to get an early start so they could go off sooner to do other work. After lotu, Sunny did the laundry and swept the floors; Mike and Dallas chopped firewood; and Elise did some weeding. I finished my prayer time and then worked in the ACER, changing the Bible lessons for school from publisher to word. Afterward Lewis and I went for a nice stretch out in the fresh air and sunshine. At the top of the airstrip, we met up with Opo and talked with him until smoke from fires started filling the air and aggravating my eye. My eye has been so irritated today from all the fires burning up the mountains and creating tons of smoke, so I haven’t been able to use my eyes much for computer work. After dinner, Daddy and I went out and brought the clothes in; then made the bed and had a nap. This afternoon, I proofread the Bible lesson that I had changed to a word file. Then I transferred it to a flash drive to be printed later from Daddy’s computer. After that, I worked in the kitchen until supper time, making sweet potato soup. This evening, I practiced keyboard first of all so I’ll be ready to play for the students to sing in lotu in the morning. Then I did the dishes. Afterward, I printed the Bible lessons. Then Eric came to bring his phone to be charged so we had him help us hang up the bunch of bananas that we bought yesterday evening. We had hidden them in the cupboard under the sink out of sight of the rats for the night and forgot about them. After that, I folded and put away today’s laundry, and then wrote journal notes. We’ve been trying and trying to send the newsletter off to the girls for printing and mailing, but cannot get a good connection. August 21. I heard light rain falling most of the night so knew it was going to be a foggy morning. It certainly was. Nearly the whole world had disappeared. Daddy would be coming, but they had several other stops to make first so wouldn’t be here before 10:00 or 11:00. The fog should be lifted by then. I don’t know what time it was when I heard the plane fly over hear headed Goroka way. The other places had given them an okay weather report, but they couldn’t land at any of them so had to take everyone back to Goroka. Daddy called me after they got back and said the pilots would be doing some training landings in other places first and then come here, probably in afternoon. There were still low clouds on the mountain tops, but the fog had lifted and the approach was clear and there was no more fog down in the valley. A little after 11:00, we heard a plane circling to land here. I thought it was MAF so sent the students up to help Daddy. But it was NTM doing some training. The students came back and started studying for their history test. Just as I dismissed class, we heard another plane. This time it was MAF so the students all went back up to the airstrip to help Daddy. It was close to 12:30 when he came down to the house. I am so thankful that he is back home again. I had just cooked some pumpkin and got the rest of the yams ready to heat up for dinner when the plane came. So I waited until Daddy came down. He had already bought a meat pie in town and eaten that so he wasn’t very hungry. He did eat a bit of pumpkin. As we were getting ready for nap, we heard another plane. This time it was SIL doing some training. So Owena airstrip was a busy place today. After nap, we put away the food items that Daddy had brought home. Then I wrote a couple e-mails and afterward wrote some math exercises on the chalkboard. Itasoru and family came while we were eating supper. They had just brought the last of their contribution to our firewood supply and were waiting for Daddy to pay them. While Daddy was still eating, I answered the door. Javin was there and wanted help finding some verses. So I booted up the computer and searched for the verses he wanted. In the mean time, Daddy finished eating and went out to take care of Itasoru family. In the mean time, Javin had left, and I started filling up the washing machine. There were too many clothes to wait until Saturday. We hadn’t even caught up yet on the washing since the last time we were in town. I also put dish water on to heat while I was filling up the machine. While the load of clothes was washing, I washed up the few dishes and also the lemons that a Waisara boy had brought this morning. After the load of wash was extracted and the machine emptied, Daddy filled up the machine with clean water for rinsing. When the rinsing was done and clothes extracted, I hung the hang-up clothes on hangars in the spare bathroom and the other clothes on the lines in the main bathroom. While I was washing and hanging clothes, Daddy was trying to get e-mails in. Praise the Lord that the two e-mails sent, although the connection didn’t last long enough to receive any. After he sent the e-mails, I wrote in my journal. Then I had a bath. Practiced keyboard. “1Maschil of Ethan the Ezrahite. I will sing of the mercies of the LORD for ever: with my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations. 2For I have said, Mercy shall be built up for ever: thy faithfulness shalt thou establish in the very heavens…. 5And the heavens shall praise thy wonders, O LORD: thy faithfulness also in the congregation of the saints…. 8O LORD God of hosts, who is a strong LORD like unto thee? or to thy faithfulness round about thee?” Psalm 89:1,2,5,8 August 22. The fog wasn’t quite as thick this morning, and it wasn’t long before the fog was gone and the sun was shining. Around noon, clouds and chilly winds came up, and it looked like the afternoon was going to be cool like it has been. By the time I got up from nap, however, the sun had come back out, and the afternoon turned out to be very warm. All the students were late for class this morning so I had them go later in Bible class, and we had a little bit less time for music. We were thankful that Dallas’s eye was better. Wonder if a bug or some other foreign object had gotten into it yesterday. I was thankful for a good amount of free time this morning while the students did independent work as I needed to prepare a meal for Daddy and me. Cooked a pot of rice, diced up a nice piece of filleted chicken and cooked it with some onions, and then made a gravy to go with it. There was leftover pumpkin from yesterday. Daniel came late morning and worked through most of the afternoon, making an extension on my computer desk in the office. Consequently, Daddy didn’t get a nap. After my nap, I helped them figure out how to cut the plywood for the top of the desk. Then I cut up a popo and had a little piece for snack. Worked on tomorrow’s lesson plans. Washed up a big batch of greens—pumpkin greens and apika. Then I needed to sit down again for a while so started writing in my journal until supper time. After supper, I cut up the greens with some onions, putting all in the pressure cooker. Then I put that on to cook and also put dish water on to heat. After washing dishes, I turned on the Lenovo to see what work can be done on it. Determined that it is pretty much useless. It will not open any publisher files. Most of the programs that were in it are no longer there. Neither of my Bible programs are there. I transferred all my pictures to a flash drive as I hadn’t done that before. Some different Bible program had been installed, but it didn’t have the helpful features that I am used to. So after a while I shut it down and said good-bye to the Lenovo. Praise the Lord, Daddy was able to get in all the e-mails this evening. So after looking at the Lenovo, I went and read the e-mails. Now I need to get the newsletter sent off to Christy. “28Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30 I’m so thankful that God’s word is filled with verses of comfort and encouragement.
August 19. Woke up to a mostly clear, blue sky morning, with just some patchy fog on the ridges (no fog coming up out of the valleys). Praise the Lord, it would be a perfect morning for NTM to bring in the drum of fuel. The NTM flight coordinator called around 7:30 for weather. Bonita came early for school so I asked her to let her father know the plane would be coming and ask him if he could make sure that some people were there to bring the drum of fuel down. Also had her ask him to remind Tomas to take the tire over to the airstrip for them to drop the drum onto. Dallas came a few minutes early for school so I asked him to make a fire, for one to take the chill off the house, especially as I had started getting a sore throat yesterday, but also so that I could boil water for drinking. He was all done making the fire before Mike came. Mike came while we were getting prayer requests, and then Dallas prayed. After prayer, we started learning 1 John 2:4 in Owena. Then I had them start working on writing their testimony of salvation. I hadn’t been able to get another lesson ready since I haven’t had the use of a printer, except for photo copying. The plane came around 8:50. We started music class, but after the plane left, I asked the class to listen for someone coming with the diesel drum. About ten minutes before the end of class, they were coming so Mike went out with the key to open the generator shed for them to put the fuel in. Then I paid them—soap for three and Maggi noodles for one. After they left, we still had five minutes left for class so we came back and practiced our song again. Then we had recess and afterward they had math class. While they were finishing the lesson they had started Friday, I started washing out a handful of clothes by hand. Then we started looking at a new math lesson. While they were working on an English lesson, I rinsed the clothes and hung them out. We finished the chapter review in history and now they will be studying for the chapter test. Didn’t get done with history class until around 1:20. Then I warmed up my dinner and ate, and it was after 2:00 before I lay down for nap. This afternoon, I put the finishing touches on the newsletter and practiced keyboard. After supper, I put math exercises on the chalkboard for tomorrow and then put water on to heat for my bath. Wanted to get my bath early before it got too cold. Then I made photo copies of a math quiz, the history test, and an English worksheet before Daddy called. After a nice chat with Daddy, I made lesson plans for tomorrow. Then did a little computer work before doing dishes. “1A Prayer of David. Bow down thine ear, O LORD, hear me: for I am poor and needy…. 5For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee…. 8Among the gods there is none like unto thee, O Lord; neither are there any works like unto thy works…. 10For thou art great, and doest wondrous things: thou art God alone. 11Teach me thy way, O LORD; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name. 12I will praise thee, O Lord my God, with all my heart: and I will glorify thy name for evermore. 13For great is thy mercy toward me: and thou hast delivered my soul from the lowest hell….. 15But thou, O Lord, art a God full of compassion, and gracious, longsuffering, and plenteous in mercy and truth.” Psalm 86:1,5,8,10-13,15 Truly there is no God like unto the LORD! August 20. The Lord gave us another lovely morning with blue sky and sunshine. There was fog this morning, but it was gone before 9:30. By early afternoon, there were high clouds and strong, chilly winds, and the sunshine had run away. Dallas came early again this morning and made a fire. In Bible class, the students continued writing their testimonies so I had time to put eggs on the wood stove to boil, and time to keep an eye on them and take care of them. Also did a couple other jobs in the kitchen. I let the students go home a few minutes earlier today, right after we reviewed their history study exercises and vocabulary. So I was able to have a little bit earlier lunch and earlier nap. After nap, I washed my hair, graded English lessons, wrote math exercises on the chalkboard. Washed up today’s dishes after supper—there were just a few; played keyboard a bit; worked on computer until just before 7:00. Then enjoyed another nice chat time with my best earthly friend.
August 18. Thought I might sleep in a bit this morning, but the rat kept waking me up between 5:00 and 6:00. Finally got up around 6:15. It looked like it would be a nice day, and the sun shone most of the morning, but the air never warmed up very much so I kept a sweater or jacket on most of the day. Made a few pancakes with pecan pieces for my breakfast so I would have something different for a couple days. Throughout the day, I worked on a history test for this week and also worked on the quarterly newsletter. Lotu didn’t start until after 10:30. Thomas preached in the afternoon on the topic of being ready for the Lord’s return. As far as I know he did a good job. He read the verses in Pidgin, but did all the preaching in Owena. He spoke with exuberance and elation. I didn’t sit in the meeting room as my throat is getting sore, and part of the time I was resting. Before supper, I practiced keyboard while it was still light enough to see. Enjoyed a nice long chat with Daddy. Then I had a snack, wrote in my journal, and did a little more work on the newsletter.
August 16. The weather certainly changes from one day to the next. The sky was partly clear yesterday evening, and stars could be seen. But the temperature didn’t go down like it had the night before so I figured the heavens must be clouding up. Even though it was only partly cloudy all night, the night stayed fairly warm. This morning there was blue sky among the clouds, and there was no fog to be seen anywhere. It appeared like it was going to be a sunny day. But some time after 9:00, I heard rain falling. Now the sky was completely cloudy, and rain fell off and on the rest of the day. We could tell the day was going to stay cool. At break time, Dallas made a fire in the wood stove. He had to revive it before he went home, as it had gotten neglected toward the end of school. I filled the wood box up before nap, but the fire was all out by the time I got up. Guess I must have been tired after a busy week, as I had slept about an hour and a half. Before supper I worked on notes for the book of Galatians. Put the computer on to charge while I was having supper, and then spent time on that project again after supper. At 7:00, Daddy called, and we enjoyed some time talking together again. Afterward, I had my bath and then worked some more on the Galatians notes. “That men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth.” Psalm 83:18 August 17. The Lord was so gracious to give us sunshine and strong winds this morning. After lotu, Anna Jean and Judy washed a load of clothes for me, by hand with plungers in the bathtub. Because of the nice weather the Lord gave us, the clothes were mostly dry by early afternoon. Had to hang a few in the schoolroom to finish drying. Later in the afternoon, the sky clouded over, the winds became chilly, and there were a few sprinkles of rain. After the girls washed the clothes, Anna Jean swept the floors, and Judy swept out the top shelf of the kitchen cupboard and took off all the old contact paper that was partly peeling off and was quite grubby. Now that shelf is ready to be covered with floor mat (linoleum). Judy also swept under the wood stove and burned the trash, and Anna Jean emptied the dish of ashes. I worked on Monday’s lesson plans, proofread and started reorganizing the notes on Galatians (have three pages of notes on Galatians 1 verse 1), wrote some math exercises on the chalkboard, and did some other little odd jobs. Right after lunch was when I brought the clothes in. After nap, I finished organizing the notes on Galatians. While the computer was recharging, I cleaned the counter top around the bathroom sink, scraped loose paint off, cut linoleum to fit and glued it in place. That bathroom counter top looks a hundred times better now. Before supper, I started getting more journal notes ready to send to Connie. Thomas came just about the time my supper was hot, and he wanted some help with understanding a couple verses that he was thinking of using in his preaching tomorrow. So my supper got a little cold and ended up being somewhat late. I put dish water on to heat before I finished eating, and finished washing dishes just in time for Daddy’s phone call. Enjoyed a nice long chat with my best friend. At first the connection was not very good; but after we got cut off and he called back, the reception was much better. After that, I finished getting journal notes ready to go to Connie and then worked on the quarterly newsletter. “11For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly. 12O LORD of hosts, blessed is the man that trusteth in thee.” Psalm 84:11,12 |
