November 19. A chilly, damp morning. Daddy started a fire in the wood stove first thing this morning; and before long, the Lord sent some sunshine. Sunny came a little before 7:00 to wash the clothes and sweep the floors. I didn’t have much other work for her today, except to wash up a bad dirty spot on the mission schoolroom floor. Afterward, she worked outside, starting to build a flower bed so she can plant flowers along the eastern area inside the fence. We went outside a couple times for some sunshine and fresh air, but it was very hot and humid out. We knew that there would be more rain coming today. This morning, I started writing an e-mail to our dear daughters; but I had just barely got started when the computer decided to restart so it could update windows. It took several hours for it to update so I worked on computer lessons, trying to get ahead a little bit for Judy’s classes. I never did get back to the e-mail today. After nap, I was too tired since the nap was interrupted several times by knocks on the door. I didn’t really get a restful nap or sleep. Rains came early this afternoon, but not as heavy as yesterday. It is still raining this evening, and the house has been damp and chilly so Daddy got a fire going again. “28) Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29) Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30) For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30) November 20. It was good to get out for a short walk this morning even though it was hot and humid again today. I was thankful to get the e-mail to C&C written this morning without interruption from updates. After a while, Daddy was able to get the e-mail sent out so we are thankful for that. This afternoon, I discovered I had two different files for the Kristen Famili (Christian Family) course — one a word file, and the other a publisher. I want everything to be the same, so got rid of the Word file, but I need to work on putting blanks in the student file so started that this evening. Judy came to ask if the young men and women can come three nights a week and practice music. Several churches are asking for them to come and sing specials for their special meetings. “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” (Proverbs 3:5) November 21. The Lord gave us a lovely morning, but I did not go out for a walk today as I was on my feet quite a while, first of all preparing pancakes for breakfast, then making the bed and folding clothes, and lastly (after quiet time) preparing veggies for soup for dinner. I was thankful for time to sit down, relax, and do a little Bible study in Numbers after that. Computer time throughout the day was spent in adding the blanks to the student copy of Kristen Famili. In the evening, Daddy and I had our worship time, singing, sharing thoughts from our Bible study, and praying.

November 17. Double seven today. How quickly the years have flown! Praise the Lord for His faithfulness through the years. How great is His faithfulness, and His compassions they fail not, and because of His mercies we are not consumed! Judy came around 8:00 for computer lesson. Her time was spent just practicing today as it had been a month and a half or so since we had a lesson. Tomorrow we’ll go to a new lesson. While she was practicing, I read the next chapter in Numbers, made up a booklet for questions for the Kamap Bikpela (Christian growth) course, and started looking through the teaching booklet and getting questions written in the question booklet. Worked on the booklet off and on throughout the day. Mid-morning, I gathered up all the trash, and we went outside for a while to burn the trash and get some sunshine and exercise. It was very hot out, however, so we did not stay out long. This afternoon, I cut up a really nice popo that Tonka had brought us a couple days ago. I don’t remember ever cutting up such a “perfect” popo (papaya) and not having to throw away even one tiny bad spot. At least if we did have such a one, it was a long time ago. I kept thanking the Lord for that fine popo. One piece didn’t fit in the container so I put it in a bowl to eat after I washed my hair. Cut up some banana with it, and it made a yummy snack. A little bit later, I made tortillas. I was still cooking them while we were eating supper so had to constantly get up and down to turn them, remove them from the pan, and put another in its place. And after supper, there were dishes to do; and I’m thankful there were not too many. I was ready to relax after that. November 18. Mike came early this morning to finish cutting the grass out beyond the fence. Judy came for another computer lesson. Today I finished up the question booklet for “Kamap Bikpela.” Now it needs to be proofread and a student copy made with blanks. Later, I started preparing more computer lessons for Judy. This afternoon, the Lord sent us a thunderstorm and heavy rain, the most rain we’ve had in some time. Praise the Lord for the rain. November 15 and 16. Finished redoing course five to fit A4 size paper and making corrections in it. Also made corrections for course six. “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.” (I John 1:7) Judy came and did the laundry this morning, but we postponed her computer lesson until tomorrow so she could go fishing with the rest of the community. People went and gathered the flowers yesterday and were up all night beating and bagging them to get them ready to take to the river today. This is a special kind of flower that, after it is beaten, is thrown into the river. The flowers stun the fish, and they all float on top of the water, and the people gather them with their hands. After my Bible study time, Daddy and I went for a walk up the airstrip. After we came back, I started making corrections in the elda/diken (elders and deacons) lessons. There were only a few corrections to make. Then I got out the leftover potatoes and beef gravy and made potato patties for our dinner. The rest of my computer time today was spent making blanks in the student copy of the elda/diken lessons. Just finished that this evening around 8:30. Praise the Lord for His help with that. Please pray for Mom and Dad. They are scheduled to fly out to Goroka next Wednesday. However, the weather has been cold and foggy with high winds. Airplanes have not been able to fly in and out with this kind of weather. Also, some of the pilots are sick, and Dad has been sick again as well. Also, quite a few of the people in the village are sick. Please pray for
Thank you so much for laboring together with Mom and Dad in your prayers! God bless you!
November 12. Sunny came early and washed clothes. It didn’t take them long to dry in the bright sunshine. She also swept the floors, peeled and cut up potatoes, and prepared a pumpkin. I did a number of odd jobs including getting my suitcase unpacked and everything put away, putting a clean sheet on the bed and making up the bed, taking down the dry clothes, and cooking dinner when the time came for that. I cooked the pumpkin ahead of time because I was hungry for something healthy to eat. Made the potatoes into mashed potatoes and made a meat gravy with ground beef and onions. How thankful we were for the bananas Mequ brought us! Was very grateful for a nap as I was super tired. This afternoon and evening, I wrote in my journal and did a short Bible study in Numbers. A little later in the evening, Nuanda came for a visit. “That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God.” (Colossians 1:10) November 13. It was a somewhat busy morning again. After breakfast and quiet time, I made the bed and folded and put away yesterday’s laundry. Emptied the last two boxes of things that came from the US. Sorted out vitamins and put away those that I can’t use right now. Got out a bigger box and reorganized all the toiletries and medical items. Cleaned the toilet. Sat down to relax and pray for a while, and it was our plan to go out afterward for some sunshine and exercise before it got too hot out. Wan came while I was relaxing, and then we would go out for a walk. But then Mike, Taqita and Lawrence came. We sat and talked with them for a good while. Mike was really excited to get his Thompson Cain Reference Bible. After they left, Mata came with bananas By the time the last person left, the sun was already high in the sky, and it was too hot out. So, no walk today. I turned on my computer and spent some time in Bible study. Then it was time for dinner. And the Lord sent us some light rain before dinner was over, and more periods of light rain off and on throughout the afternoon. We thank Him for the rain, and we continue to pray for more rain as the parched ground is in need of some good showers to make it soft enough for digging and planting. This afternoon and evening, I spent time adding OT verses into the culture course. “23) Am I a God at hand, saith the LORD, and not a God afar off? 24) Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the LORD. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the LORD.” (Jeremiah 23:23-24) November 14. More little rains during the night, praise the Lord, and cloudy and foggy for a while this morning. Then the sun shone through. Sometimes it ran away and hid behind billowy clouds causing cool winds to blow on us, then it would come out of its hiding place to warm our skin again while we were out getting a little exercise before the meeting on the hill. When we came back inside, I spent time in Bible study in Numbers. This afternoon and evening, I worked on revising the setup of the culture lessons. November 10. Another very busy and tiring day. Washed clothes and hung them on hangers all around the house since the lines and clothespins were already in use. Enjoyed sitting outside again for quiet time and breakfast while the clothes were washing. Did a little packing and then we went out to Lapilo to pick up the medicine at the clinic. Praise the Lord for bringing the medicine in. Over K2000 for eleven months supply. Sounds like a lot in kina, but is less than $700US. That was just for the apixaban. They still have metoprolol in stock at the clinic so we got another three-month supply of that. That was only K7. Praise the Lord that He provides whether a large amount or a small. Made a quick stop at West stores on the way back to the flat to try to get red yarn, but it was too expensive. That was the only store that had red, but the price was higher. The rest of the day we were kept busy packing off and on. Also listened to a good missions message by Pastor Mills based on Acts 13:1-4, and wrote a couple e-mails. Didn’t get a chance to do Bible study in Numbers until this evening. November 11. Back to the village at last. Arose around 6:00 this morning, about the same time as usual. It was going to be another warm day, although it started out cool and cloudy, so I did not sit outside to read the Bible or eat breakfast. Later, it turned out to be a very hot day. By the time we finished last-minute packing and cleaning up the apartment, it was time to head over to the hangar. Silvia was there waiting for us as she had brought some things to the hangar to send into Owena. It was good to see her. She had been very sick with COVID right after David had been sick and thought she might die. David wasn’t nearly as sick. She said that the family is hoping to come out to Owena during the school holidays. Even though we arrived at the hangar at 9:00, our flight wasn’t until 11:00 so we had quite a while to wait before the plane arrived back at the hangar. We hung around the cargo room and the office for a while. Then Aryan took us over to the training room where we might be more comfortable. He turned on the air conditioning, but it got too cool for us so we turned it off and opened the door. The air was full of smoke all the way from Goroka to Owena. The appearance of the earth and air is very much like a drought. It is so, so dry. No rain for a long time. The water in the dam is low so water runs very slowly to the house. But at least there is water, praise the Lord! Hardly anyone was around when the plane landed, and mostly men. No young ladies to help look after cargo at the house. Wan was there, and I thought maybe he could help. In the meantime, Daddy had asked him to help. So he stood at the door and took cargo and gave out chocolates. After a while, Sunny came along, and she brought all the cargo into the main part of the house. When everyone was gone, she filled up the washing machine for doing laundry tomorrow. Since it was already past noon, we only put away fridge and freezer items. Then we warmed up meat pies for dinner. I was hungry for veggies, but didn’t have time to prepare any. After nap, we unpacked and put away other items, except for the boxes of things that came via JAARS. They could wait ‘til another day. I was very thankful for a bath this evening after a hot and sweaty day. Joshua brought us news that Erovi is very sick — not eating or drinking, and his bodily functions shutting down. November 8. A lovely sunny morning. Sat outside to read Bible and pray. After breakfast, there was even time for Bible study. Did a little packing this morning. Around 9:00, we went out to Food Link to get white vinegar and to Seng Da to get flour, bread, eggs, and several other things. After we got back to the flat, there was a little time before dinner to fix up Connie’s picture for printing and to write an e-mail. Wrote another e-mail this afternoon and listened to a church meeting from VBC, Kittanning. They had just had revival meetings, and the pastor’s message was to help strengthen the preaching they had heard and seek to continue the revival. This evening, I worked more on Revelation and nearly finished through chapter 19. “But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you.” (Matthew 5:44) November 9. The morning was warm, and the sunshine felt so good in the early hours as I sat outside on the veranda for quiet time and breakfast. It turned out to be a very hot and tiring day however. Went out shopping again this morning for just a few things — at Papindo central and uptown, Seigu market, and a small store called Hot Spot that often has yarn colors that nobody else has. Daddy also went a couple other places while I stayed in the car because I was too tired to do more walking around. I think I was tired just because it was too hot. It was already after 11:00 before we got back to the flat. I was weary and hungry. Needed a little protein snack. Then Wilson came along, and he helped Daddy tape up a couple more boxes, carry some items down to the truck, and take things over to MAF. It was already noon by then. I waited a while for Daddy to come back, but finally got too hungry and warmed up my bowlful of fish chowder. A few minutes after I’d started eating, Daddy came in. It was hard to sleep at nap time because it was so warm in the flat, so mostly I just lay there and rested. Later in the afternoon, we listened to a message by Pastor Matties of Bible Baptist Church in Belvedere, IL, preaching about “Let Us Go On unto Perfection,” based on Hebrews 5:11-6:3. November 5. Daddy went out this morning to try to finish up the shopping — mostly things for other people in Owena. I stayed here and swept the floors which have been needing it for several days, but there was always something else that needed to be done that made us too tired. I thank the Lord for His strength to help me do all the sweeping as this is a fairly large apartment. Also enjoyed Bible study time in Numbers before and after sweeping. Wrote a number of e-mails today as well — sending the newsletter pages to C&C for printing, sending them a short personal e-mail, also journal notes; an e-mail to Diane; one to Dr. Kevin in reply to his e-mail saying we could pick up my meds on Wednesday. Started another Revelation study to send to Connie, but was too tired to do a lot on it this evening. We listened to Wednesday evening service from VBC. November 6. The day started with doing laundry. While things were washing, there was time for breakfast and quiet time. Hung out the clothes and then talked with Steve for about an hour via Skype. It was good to see him and talk with him, and we were thankful for a good connection after a not-so-good start. How we appreciate his part in the Owena ministry! I did some moving of things over to the other apartment, and we did more moving this afternoon after my nap. This evening, we listened to Margaret Stringer’s testimony as shared at ABC this past week. Such a blessing to hear how God led and used her life. “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” (John 14:26) November 7. The day was busy, too busy. I made breakfast (pancakes) in the big apartment before we did the last little bit of cleaning and made the final move into the small apartment. Also put eggs on to boil for egg salad for supper later. After breakfast, I washed up the dishes and Daddy dried them and put them away. Then we made sure everything that needed to be transferred to the other apartment was taken care of. Nine o’clock came around quickly, and we enjoyed an hour plus of chat time with Christy and Connie. I was pretty tired by the time we were done talking. Was thankful to finally get to sit down and read Acts 13 and take some time for prayer. By then it was already time to start dinner. Peeled and cut up carrots and added them to a pot with red lentils, bouillon, water, salt and pepper. While that was cooking, I started deboning the rest of the fish. Whew! What a job! I didn’t realize it was going to take so long. Finally finished and added the fish, the small bit of leftover rice, and the small amount of pasta sauce to the pot and warmed everything up for our dinner. How good it tasted! There was a funeral going on next door, and quite a few people had gathered together to cry with the family and then to listen to preaching and singing. It was a blessing to hear a funeral with preaching and not just the usual hopeless wailing. I was truly thankful for nap time after dinner. This afternoon, I got an e-mail written with acknowledgments for Christy to add to the newsletters. Then it was time to mix up the eggs for egg salad (so glad for Daddy’s strong arm to mash those rubbery egg whites). Also cut up a fresh tomato and a cucumber to add to our sandwiches. After supper, we “listened” to a message by Pastor Mike Edwards of Heritage Baptist Church in Woodbridge, VA. I didn’t get much of the message because the microphone apparently wasn’t turned up enough to make it loud and plain. The message was about “God’s Plan for Missions” and what I could hear was a blessing and encouragement with fresh thoughts on missions. After that, I washed the dishes before sitting down for Bible study in Numbers and then writing in my journal. November 3. Praise the Lord that both of us slept better last night so we felt more refreshed to go out and do some shopping. First order of business was laundry, however. Then, after resting a bit, we took off for Seng Da, mostly to get things in the dry goods section upstairs. Stopped and talked with David for a while. He would like a song book, more tracts, and some Genesis/Exodus book whenever we can get some out to him. After buying a few things upstairs, we made a handful of purchases downstairs. We went to Seigu market looking for bananas and popo, but didn’t find any. Bought a small head of broccoli, a few cucumbers, and a couple tomatoes. Shared gospel tracts with those from whom we purchased food. Next stop was Goroka Stationery to get three school certificates laminated — Sunny’s, Dallas’s, and Mike’s. Judy’s isn’t ready yet. I was waiting to put her typing grade on it if we ever get finished. Last of all we went to the pharmacies. Bought a bottle of calcium/bone supplement. Wanted to get a photo printed for Sera, but none of the machines were working. Got back to the house a little after 11:00. I was thankful to get back. Had a really hard time breathing this morning, especially with a mask on. The air was so close, I couldn’t get deep enough breaths. Was hungry when we got back so had a little snack even though it wouldn’t be long until dinner time. Slept hard at nap time, but I still popped awake at the usual time that I get up — 3:00. This afternoon, we packed boxes so Daddy can take them to the hangar tomorrow. I also made tortillas for my supper. After supper, I finally had a chance to finish my Bible study in Numbers. So many thoughts run through my head, but it is hard to express them all as I would like. This evening, I worked more on the setup of Revelation, finishing all but the last verse of chapter 16. “97) O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day… 113) I hate vain thoughts: but thy law do I love… 163) I hate and abhor lying: but thy law do I love… 165) Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them.” (Psalm 119:97,113,163,165) November 4. We’re thankful for the CRMF worker Nason who carried all the packed boxes down to the truck for Daddy. Then Daddy took them all over to MAF so they would be out of our way here and so they would be ready for the flight into Owena next week, Lord willing. Afterward, Daddy stopped at Yida to get flour (I used the rest of the flour yesterday to make tortillas), toilet paper, and fish. The fish didn’t look like the Mahi Mahi I saw there the other day, but the worker could have gotten it mixed up with the barracuda which was in the same place. The mahi mahi was supposed to have been fileted, but this fish still had its skin on and had long bones running through it. I didn’t see any small bones so hoped that there were only those long ones. Anyway, this is what we had so we would cook it up and see if it could be eaten with enjoyment. First, I put on a pot of rice to cook. Then I prepared the broccoli and set it on to cook. And last of all, I put the fish into a glass oven dish, sprinkled it with salt and pepper, spread it with butter, cut up onion and garlic on top, and put it into the preheated oven. When the fish was nearly done, I drizzled pasta sauce over the top and added the broccoli, and the carrots I had cooked yesterday. It was still 12:30 before the dish of fish with its condiments was ready to eat. We put rice on our plates first, and spread the fish mixture on top. Praise the Lord, there were no small bones, and it wasn’t too difficult to pull out the long ones. And the fish tasted so good. We hadn’t had “fresh” fish in a long time. We were later than usual getting to nap since our dinner was later. And we were awakened early by the police using a loudspeaker to get everybody off the streets. It wasn’t quite 3:00 which is when curfew time begins. Throughout the day, I used free time to work on the quarterly newsletter. I thank the Lord for helping me finish that early this evening. Sometimes I really struggle with what to say and how to put things into words. I try not to get a lot of unimportant details, and I strive to make the letter meaningful and encouraging to the readers. This evening, we also listened to the Sunday afternoon meeting from VBC with Austin Fryer, a student from ABC, preaching. November 1. It has been a cool, mostly cloudy day, only a few moments of sunshine. This was the first day I felt like getting back to Bible study in Numbers. How glad I was for that! After breakfast and quiet time, I cleaned the bottom of the shower stall. It was getting rather yucky. Once it was clean and dry, I sprayed it with the disinfectant spray we had bought. Not long after that, we went out to shop. Only two stops today — Yida and Wantok in West. We were grateful to find several things that were on our list, including some beef mince at Wantok. We came back to the house to put the meat and cheese away, thinking we would go out to another store; but fatigue told us to wait until another day so that’s what we did. We just relaxed for a while and then had dinner. This afternoon and evening, I did more work on the Revelation file, finishing chapter 12. Praise the Lord for His help. We also listened to half the Sunday morning service from VBC. It got too late to listen to the other half because it wouldn’t buffer fast enough. “Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” (Hebrews 13:5) November 2. We didn’t go out shopping today because neither of us slept well last night so we didn’t feel very strong. Also Daddy got a migraine early this morning. Solomon Wan came by to get more tracts for David. I was happy for some time spent in Bible study in Numbers. The rest of my computer time today was given to writing the October progress report, except for about an hour this evening working on Revelation. “Only fear the LORD, and serve him in truth with all your heart: for consider how great things he hath done for you.” (I Samuel 12:24) |
