Note: I got way behind again on posting Mom's journal notes, so I skipped ahead to January. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ January 23. School is scheduled to start a week from today, and I want to make use of as much time this week as possible to get everything in order. Therefore, most of today’s hours were spent printing Bible lesson papers for the lesson 1 (which will cover ten class days, perhaps more), printing memory verse reminders for the children to take home and getting them cut, getting a start on getting all the visuals and worksheets together, and all the other things that are needed for that course. Still have some work left to do tomorrow. I also printed out pages of verses to give out and got those cut. Prepared new verses to print when these run low. Answered the door several times, and Daddy probably answered five or ten times as often. Apekio came with a few bananas she had found at market. Praise the Lord! Bananas are scarce right now, and so are popo. Nurse Jonathan came this afternoon and took the stitches out of Daddy’s head. He is to come again Friday morning to take the stitches out of the other two places. (Dad had some skin cancer removed while he was in Goroka) And it was a blessing to take time out and go outside in the sunshine for a while as well. January 24. Thank you, Lord, for your help and strength and wisdom for today. There are so many things to think about to begin a new school, and it takes a lot of thinking to think about everything. Gradually things are coming together, but who knows if I am still forgetting some things. I’ve done a lot of printing; photo copying; coloring; organizing visuals, worksheets, books and other supplies, etc.. We received word that Antopa died today. He was quite elderly and had not been well for quite a while. The saddest thing about his death is that he was unsaved. January 25, Most of the day again was spent getting everything together to start school on Monday. I also changed the Pidgin Bible files back to letter size and redid the cover. I did take time out to prepare a pot of rice and tuna for dinner, and in the afternoon took time to make a batch of tortillas for my sandwiches. Wan came this morning and spent several hours replacing rotten fence posts. “Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time.” (I Peter 5:6) January 26. It was so nice to get out for a real walk today, up the airstrip and back, instead of just ambling around the yard. The sky was so blue, and the air was pleasantly warm. By afternoon, the weather had completely changed and a light rain continued to fall the rest of the day. Most of my time today again was spent on printing and getting everything in order for school. January 27. Anna Jean came this morning with a bad headache and cold. She seemed to feel a good bit better after having some aspirin and also some coffee. After she did the laundry, cleaned the desks in the schoolroom. and cleaned the foot locker, she and I sat down together and talked about the schedule, lessons, and teaching material for classes starting this coming week. While we were busy talking, Jonathan came and took out the rest of Daddy’s stitches. He said everything looks good so we praise the Lord for that. After Jonathan left, Anna Jean played a bit at the computer, and Daddy and I went outside for some sunshine and a bit of exercise. The rest of the morning and the afternoon were spent on preparations for school. Praise the Lord, I believe everything is ready now. January 28. Another dry, sunny, but pleasant morning. After mid-morning, Daddy and I took a walk to the airstrip and down. Not up today. We went down and then across to Amos’s property, around his house, by the outside of our front yard fence, up the hill on the north side of the house, by the outside of the backyard fence on the east, and around the corner to the gate. It was a refreshing walk. Ran into the Yerontse family as they were coming down the airstrip on their way to lotu (church). Was encouraged as I read through the rest of Job chapter one and did a little Bible study on the last three verses. After that, I started redoing the computer-printed alphabet cards to make them smaller to use as flash cards. In the afternoon, I printed them out; and early this evening, I finished coloring them with the markers; and afterward, I got them cut up and ready to use.

October 28. After the blessing of rain yesterday, the Lord blessed us with sunshine and a nice breeze this morning to dry the clothes and cheer our hearts too. The afternoon turned out to be very warm and humid, making it hard to rest at nap time and to breathe until the afternoon began to turn cool. Anna Jean did the laundry and swept the floors. That’s all the work there was for her today. When work was done, she practiced computer. I was busy with a number of odd jobs. Made new verse cards for witnessing. Found a new picture for my desktop. Read a chapter in I Chronicles. Printed more SKMS handbooks. Printed the teacher’s copy of SKMS music lessons. Around mid-morning, Daddy and I walked around outside; I cut dead flowers off some of the lily plants; and we walked across the trail to the airstrip. Before dinner, I took clothes in off the line. This afternoon and evening, I worked more on the revision of the culture lessons. Also cleaned the bathroom sink, tub, and toilet. October 29. It’s already Friday, three days until we go to town. But I wanted to start packing anyway so started with packing painting supplies as I would like to work on painting during our rest time in town. Also revised the town list and printed out a new copy. And printed out copies of the will with spaces for witnesses to sign. I thought I had already done that so I was glad I checked to see or we wouldn’t have had them ready to go. Then we made the shopping list. Wan came to replace rotten fence posts, and after a while one of his sons came to help him. Later, I made a few small corrections in the Scripture file. This afternoon and evening, I worked a bit more on the culture lessons. Also did a bit more packing this evening. Daddy found a teeny tiny scorpion this evening, and we are thankful that he was able to kill it. October 30. Most of my time today was spent either packing or, for sit-down, working on revision of the culture course. We did go out and walk around the yard a couple times — once in the morning, and once in the afternoon — but it was so hot and humid out, we didn’t feel like staying out long. The sun felt extra hot beating on our skin. Daddy’s welts all seem to be coming to a head, a half dozen of them or so, all concentrated on the left side of the back of his neck. They itch quite a bit, and his shirt rubs on them, irritating them more. He is wondering if they are shingles. This evening we listened to a sermon by Evangelist Jerry Sivnskty, the first in a series preached at VBC on Revival. October 26. Praise the Lord for rain off and on during the night. Part of the morning was foggy and part sunny. Wan came to clean the trail to the airstrip. I got all my sewing stuff cleaned up and put away, the desk cleaned, and a canvas out to start a painting. Went outside for a little stretch, sunshine, and fresh air. Sat down to write an e-mail to NTM clinic about getting more metoprolol, but couldn’t find an address, so we’ll just give them a call when we get to town. Searched through sent e-mails, too (which go back for ten months), but nothing there. Finished the revision of Revelation 1-3 (Church History) and printed the teacher’s copy this evening. Made just a few changes in the Course 3 Music lessons, but still need to print them. This afternoon, I also drew the basic lines for a painting I would like to do. Am not quite sure how to do this type of painting so I hope it comes out okay. Also put a button on the fancy pink lightweight jacket that I have. It has needed one for a long time. The Lord sent us quite a rain this evening, and quite a lot of flying ants too. Ugh! Daddy was finally able to get in touch with Famiri today and learned that MAF is not flying at all next week so that option is out. Then he was also finally able to get in touch with NTM and make a booking for this coming Tuesday. October 27. A quieter day today. Wrote a couple e-mails in the morning which Daddy sent out. Otherwise I mainly worked on revision of the culture course setup. Late morning, I cooked a pot of rice and some ground beef to add to it. While the rice was cooking, I made the dough for my tortillas and rolled it into balls. This afternoon, I washed my hair and rolled out the tortillas and cooked them. A young lady named Eqavare came from Marivo to ask about the missionary training course. She was only recently saved, but has been attending Marimari Baptist in Marivo. Her husband is unsaved. Daddy is getting more and bigger welts on the back of his neck and runs a fever every afternoon so we are quite concerned about his health. He will try to get a doctor appointment as soon as we go out to town. October 24. After breakfast, quiet time, and making the bed, I read a chapter in I Chronicles. Then I started doing more revisions of the Revelation (Church History) lessons. Around 9:30, I took a break, and we got ready to go out for a walk. We did get to go up the airstrip today — my first time since hurting my knee. Praise the Lord for His strength. Coming down was a bit harder on the knee than going up; but I found that if I turned my feet out at a slight angle, my knees didn’t hurt as much. After that, it was time for a snack and more work on the Revelation file. Praise the Lord for helping me to get quite a bit done on the Revelation revisions today. This afternoon, I worked on sewing. I thought it wouldn’t probably be hard to make pockets, but I didn’t know how hard it was going to be. If I had had some instructions, it might have been easier; but, as it was, I had to go by trial and error. Finally finished one pocket this evening. I believe I will leave it at that — one pocket will be satisfactory. October 25. Amos came this morning to talk to us about some things. We asked him about watching the house while we are gone to town, and he said that they would do that. Nendisa won’t be able to help as she has been asked by the OIC at the health center to be a baby sitter for mothers who come to the clinic. He also said that he may be gone part of the time as Nuanda has started up some outreach groups, and Nuanda wants him to travel with them. But Mata and Evelin and the boys can look after the house. Anna Jean said that she also was asked to go with Nuanda’s outreach group, singing in the Gethsemane Gospel Light Singers group with the mamas. A couple other men will lead other groups to other areas. Daddy rang MAF this morning, and Christine said they should be able to pick us up on November 3. Famiri is supposed to call back and confirm that. That’s the same day that the LBC outreach groups are supposed to leave, so we’ll have to find carriers somewhere. Daddy and I enjoyed walking around in the fresh air and sunshine before I started working on the revision of the Revelation questions. Praise the Lord, I finished that part this evening after working on that most of the rest of the day. Praise the Lord for giving us some rain this afternoon and evening too. Before my bath this evening, I also finished making the hair holder that I was working on to go with the PNG outfit. After supper, Daddy had a scary incident when he swallowed a good bit of water down the wrong pipe. I didn’t realize he was choking, but thought he was having one of his kind of coughing spells which he has now and then. But when he kept going, I realized something else was wrong. It was scary for both of us. Thank you, Lord, for taking care of him and bringing him through. |
