August 20. Praise the Lord for a good rest last night. Was up around 6:15 to take a shower and wash my hair. Then I started the laundry so we could have that done before Lynn came to work. Prepared and ate breakfast and started quiet time while things were washing. By then they were ready to hang up. Finished prayer time after that and then did a short Bible study in Leviticus. Worked for a while on setting up II Corinthians. Then Daddy and I went out for some sunshine and exercise. Worked on II Corinthians off and on throughout the afternoon and the early part of the evening. Praise the Lord, I was able to complete through chapter 7. At supper time, Wenera called, and Daddy called him back. August 21. It has been quite a busy day. First thing after breakfast and Bible reading, we got the towels and bedding together and put one load in to wash. Had prayer time while things were washing. We hung out the first load and put in another and I continued prayer time. Then we hung out the second load. About 10:00, we got ready to go shopping. Just needed a few things. Went to Papindo central first, then King Wee, Bintangor, and last of all Yida. It was a little after noon when we got back to the flat. I didn’t have anything made for my dinner, and it was too late to make something so we had lunch — tuna-tomato sandwiches. After nap, I got busy in the kitchen. There was a popo that needed to be cut up; and then I needed to make myself some supper. (There was still leftover spaghetti and carrots for Daddy.) Made a pot of creamy carrot soup for myself. After supper, I read the day’s e-mails and sent some pictures to C&C. By then the soup was cool enough to blend so washed out the blender (I had used it for a smoothie in the morning) and had the soup taken care of in no time. Then it was time to do the dishes. August 22. Went to bed a little bit early last night, but wasn’t really tired so couldn’t get to sleep. Finally got back up around 11:20 and was up reading until midnight or a little after when I felt tired. Was thankful to get some sleep after that. It was pancake day so was in the kitchen quite a while at the beginning of the morning. Fixed Daddy’s breakfast first, and then finally had my breakfast and quiet time a little after 8:00. Cleaned up the kitchen and then relaxed a while talking with Christy and Connie for about an hour. Such a blessing to be able to talk with them more often while we are in town. Later in the morning, Daddy and I took a little stroll in the sunshine. Before dinner, we played a game of Boggle. We wanted to play Scrabble, but a third of more of the tiles were missing. Then we were going to play Upwords, but there were no directions. So Boggle was the only choice left. After nap, we watched a video by NTM pilot Ryan, taken when he flew into Owena from Bulolo on his way back to Goroka. The Lord sent us a little rain this afternoon, the first rain in a good while. After supper, we listened to this past Wednesday evening’s service from VBC in Lattimore. Then I did the day’s dishes.

August 18. It was another night where sleep refused to come. I was tired — too tired to get up; too tired to make sensible prayer. So I just lay there waiting for sleep to come. It was after 1:30 a.m., but I don’t know exactly when, before I started getting some sleep; but even then, it wasn’t sound sleep. Was up at daylight to take a shower and have some breakfast. Before I finished my morning prayer time, my eyes were having a hard time staying open so I went and lay down for about an hour. Felt better after that so did a little cleaning. Washed out my and Daddy’s masks; cleaned the toilet and bathroom sink and countertop; straightened up Daddy’s room and made his bed and mine. When all that was done, it was 11:00, and I was hungry. Couldn’t find anything healthy for snack so decided to have an early dinner. At least it would be healthy, and I could always have another healthy lunch mid-afternoon. About 1:00, I went for my afternoon nap. Afterward, I started out for a stretch in the sunshine; but it was much too hot out so came back inside. Did some work on setting up I Corinthians in the Scripture print file. Decided to make a popo cobbler with a not-too-good green popo. It was my first try using the oven here, and it worked great. By 4:00, I was getting hungry for supper since I’d had an early lunch so ate my supper while the cobbler was cooking. After I ate, the sun was still shining, but it didn’t feel so hot so went outside for a little sunshine. When I came back in, Karen was busy packing and Rachel was working at the computer. They invited me to come in and visit for a while so I did. When I came back over, I worked more on the Scripture file, ate a little of the cobbler, and did the dishes. Worked more on the print file until Daddy called. We didn’t talk as long this evening, as an hour last night had tired me out quite a bit. There wasn’t really much to say anyway; and, Lord willing, he will be back tomorrow. Worked on the print file until about 8:00. Then I had reached my limit for tonight. “Speak unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say unto them, Ye shall be holy: for I the LORD your God am holy.” (Leviticus 19:2) In Leviticus 11:44, the Lord said, Ye shall be holy, for I am holy. In verse 45, He said, Ye shall therefore be holy, for I am holy. Now again, the Lord reminds His people, Ye shall be holy: for I the LORD your God am holy (19:2). August 19. A mostly sleepless night again. I’m wondering if the medicine is keeping me awake. Was up a little after 6:00. Daddy would be coming back today. Had shower, breakfast, quiet time. Swept the kitchen-dining room-living area. Lukas came by and showed me how to use the new gate door key. I peeled and cut up carrots so they would be ready to cook for dinner. Had a short Bible study in Leviticus. Daddy arrived a little after 10:00. Then we were busy unpacking and putting away some of the things he brought back. Then I finished getting dinner. Started the carrots cooking; put a small pot of water on to boil for spaghetti; made the meat sauce. After dinner, there was cleanup to do; and by then, I was exhausted. Off to bed for a welcome hour’s nap. After nap, I did a little more organizing. Spent a good part of the afternoon setting up I Corinthians. Worked on it a little more after supper before doing the dishes. When dishes were done, Daddy and I listened to Wednesday night’s service from VBC. We were actually able to view the whole service without any stops this evening. Then I finished up I Corinthians chapter 16 so that book is now done. Praise the Lord! August 16. Praise the Lord for a better sleep last night. Enjoyed a little chat this morning on Skype with Larry and his son Alex who were visiting Martha. I thank the Lord, too, for an encouraging doctor visit. Dr. Kevin is pleased with my progress so I am too. I only need to go see him once a week now. We were at the doctor’s office over two hours again. Had another EKG, and the fibrillations are still there, but the medicine is keeping things under control. Am thankful to the Lord for giving me Dr. Kevin for my main doctor. By the time we got back to the flat, it was dinner time. We ate up the leftovers — Daddy had carrots, potatoes, and hamburger; and I had a medley of fish, rice, and zucchini topped with pasta sauce and cheese. Then we had nap; and when I got up, Daddy was out shopping. This afternoon, I worked on an answer to FBC’s e-mail for their coming mission advancement month. It took a while to think things through, Daddy and I putting our thoughts together. Finished that up this evening after supper. And the hymns to sing that “just happened” to be next in the song book were “Saved by the Blood” and “Nor Silver Nor Gold.” “Who is wise, and he shall understand these things? prudent, and he shall know them? for the ways of the LORD are right, and the just shall walk in them: but the transgressors shall fall therein.” (Hosea 14:9) August 17. We were awakened once about 11:30 p.m. by the screaming of the alarm. The alarm had gone off twice earlier in the evening, so we were thankful it only went off once during the night. The alarm system for this complex is not working properly. I was awake by 6:00 this morning. Daddy was already up, getting ready for his flight back to Owena. A little before 7:00, Karen and Rachel took him over and dropped him off at the hangar. Then they went shopping. After my breakfast, quiet time, making the bed, and reading the e-mails, I got busy making tortillas. Also continued prayer time while I was getting the tortillas ready, and did a little Bible study while the tortillas were cooking. (Only two of them got burnt 😊, but they were still edible.) Sang and read a little bit before going outside for a little sunshine and exercise. Talked with Rachel and Karen a few minutes on my way out. By 11:30, I was tired so had an early lunch and nap. This afternoon, I did some reading in a Bible doctrines book. An e-mail came in from Dr. Kevin saying that results of my thyroid test had come back from Australia and that I had tested negative for hyperthyroidism. Praise the Lord for that news. Then I walked a bit before having a fruit snack. After my snack, I got journal notes ready to send to Connie. By then, it was time to fix something for supper so made a couple large fish patties for tonight and tomorrow night. A whole one was too much, however, so only ate a half, plus some zucchini with pasta sauce and cheese. A little after 7:00, Daddy called, and we chatted until about 8:00. August 13. Praise the Lord for a more restful night last night although the night was not without interruption. All night long from 7:00 p.m. until 7:00 a.m. or later, very loud “music” with a horrible beat permeated the air from a couple houses down the street. Every so often, it woke me up, and then it took a while for me to get back to sleep. This morning, I started another e-mail to C&C. About mid-morning, Daddy and I went out shopping so we’d have enough groceries for the weekend. After three stores, I’d reached my limit; but Daddy went back out before lunch and again this afternoon. He has bookings to go into Owena on Tuesday and come back out on Thursday so he can pick up more supplies that we’ll need while we are in town. I washed up the dishes just before lunch so I wouldn’t have to do them this evening as I knew I’d be busy enough preparing a meal. After my nap, I relaxed a bit and looked through some recipe books. Then I prepared carrots, rice, and fresh fish for our supper. Hadn’t had fresh fish for a long time. After supper and cleaning up the kitchen, I finished the e-mail to C&C. Then I did a little revising of the newsletter and put a few pictures in . August 14. Today I didn’t go anywhere, but I did wash clothes this morning. I hung out a few of them, but Daddy took care of the rest. We also talked with Martha a short while. After all the laundry was hung out, Daddy went out to find a phone and some coffee for Mike. I finished my prayer time while all was quiet and also did the dishes. As soon as Daddy came back, we had dinner and then nap. Then we brought in the clothes, folded them, and put them away. Later I worked on another e-mail for C&C with the list of acknowledgments for our supporters’ newsletter, and finished that this evening. Before supper, we went outside for fresh air and a little stretch. August 15. Last night was mostly sleepless so I was tired today. For some reason, my head just wanted to be awake. Maybe I got about three hours, perhaps four, of sleep. Consequently, I took a morning nap and an afternoon nap. Later this afternoon, Karen and Rachel invited us over to their apartment to share some homemade ice cream. Then we had our supper, and I did the dishes, and then we listened to a message by Pastor Shane Lewis entitled “No Reserves, No Retreats, No Regrets.” “For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.” (Leviticus 17:11) It is the blood. It is the shed blood. It is the poured-out blood. If Christ had simply died, without His blood having been shed, there would be no atonement for our souls. “In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace.” (Ephesians 1:7) “18) Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold…. 19) But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.” (I Peter 1:18-19) Praise God for the precious blood! August 11. Lewis’s three-quarter century birthday. Didn’t sleep quite as well last night. Maybe I wasn’t quite as tired. I did get tired before mid-morning, however, and took about an hour’s nap. I asked Rachel later about the medicine; and she said, Yes, it can make a person feel tired. After I got up from my morning nap, Daddy and I went out and did some shopping — Seng Da, market, Papindo central, and Bintangor. It was around 12:30 when we got back to the flat. Put groceries away, had lunch, and then afternoon nap. Went outside and walked around in the sunshine a while before I started getting supper. Fixed up the greens we had bought at market and made cheeseburgers, which is what Daddy had ordered for his birthday. Daddy asked Bryan to come up and talk with us this morning. He told Bryan our situation and asked if he knew where we might be able to stay for two or three months. Bryan is looking into some places for us. August 12. The night was not very restful — hard to get enough air and heart was beating so strong I could feel it pumping throughout much of the body. We didn’t go anywhere this morning, but I went back to bed again about an hour after breakfast — weak and sleepy. We had an early lunch so I could get another short nap before we headed for the clinic again this afternoon. Today we saw Dr. Bud, as Dr. Kevin was off. Dr. Bud was very thorough as well, and we spent a couple hours with him. We were two hours again at the clinic so it was already supper time when we arrived home. After supper, I worked on the quarterly newsletter. Have it all completed except for the quotations. Thank the Lord for His help with that. August 9. Connie’s birthday. It has been quite a day. Last night was probably the worst night I’ve had in a long, long time. I did not get much sleep at all. Couldn’t seem to get enough air, and I felt very light-headed. When I got up, I said to Daddy, I don’t think I can make it through another night like last night. So we determined that we would try to get the rest of the packing done quickly and be ready by 9:00 to go to town. Daddy texted Glenys to let her know that we were going to try to be ready for the early flight. We had a hurried breakfast and hurried around packing, although I didn’t hurry as much as I normally would have. We did forget a couple things, but not things that we can’t do without. MAF loaded off medical supplies for Owena and loaded on coffee besides Daddy and me. We took off from Owena around 9:30, but it took an extra fifteen minutes to get to Aiyura because there was lots of low fog along the shortcut that Aryan took. He kept circling around trying to find an opening, but finally had to backtrack and take the longer route. He dropped off the coffee at Aiyura and picked up a passenger. It was a little after 10:30 when we arrived in Goroka. The Aibai truck was not available because Karen and Rachel had just come out from Kiari and Aibai, The Kiari van is in the workshop so they had priority on the red truck. They had just arrived this morning too. Wesley drove us to CRMF in the MAF van; and just as we arrived, Rachel and Karen were getting ready to come over to MAF to pick us up. Instead we offloaded our cargo from the MAF van into the red truck and the young ladies drove it around back. Daddy and I walked around back. CRMF workers helped carry things upstairs. After we got everything up here into the apartment, Daddy called NTM to see if they could take me in. They said they would call back a little later. Noon came, and they hadn’t called back yet. I prepared a boiled egg to go on one of my tortillas and had my lunch here. After my lunch, I was thankful to get a short rest by lying on my side. I had just gotten up when Daddy came in and said “We’re ready to go.” So off we went to the clinic at NTM. I was very thankful to have Dr. Kevin as my doctor. He had arrived back in the country three weeks ago and had just finished his time of quarantine. Today was his first day back at work. I was thankful that he had no other patients. Freddie and Charity did most of the initial work and the blood work. Michela also helped. Dr. Kevin was very thorough, not just in making sure that they covered all the bases, but also in explaining things simply and in detail. We were there a total of two hours, much of that time just waiting for blood test results. At first it looked like some abnormalities, but Dr. Kevin felt that they didn’t line up with my symptoms and checkup so he had them draw more blood. Boo Hoo! Well, I lived through it, and there were no abnormalities. Praise the Lord for that. The big diagnosis was atrial fibrillation so he started me on treatment for that — metropol to slow down the heart rate and apixaban to thin the blood.* I have to go back again tomorrow morning to be checked and then other times throughout the next two or three weeks. It was going on 6:00 when we go back. Karen gave us a few carrots and tomatoes from their shopping (well, we paid her for them), and I cooked up the carrots and also some chicken that Daddy had bought when he went out to lunch. *Mom and Dad fly back out to Goroka in about two weeks. Please pray that the supply of Mom's medicine (apixaban) will be in by then. She has done well with that medicine, so she doesn't really want to have to switch to a different one. August 10. Yesterday evening, I had finished writing in my journal and was planning to write a note to Connie and send her birthday wishes. However, I started feeling really strange and seemed to all of a sudden be zapped of my strength. I got up, did what was really necessary before going to bed, and then crawled into bed without a shower. It was about 8:00, two hours after I had taken the first dose of medicine Dr. Kevin prescribed. Was I having a reaction to the medicine or was I just super over-tired? Or both? How I praise the Lord for a good night’s rest! I woke up once around 10:30 and was feeling somewhat nauseated, but was able to get back to sleep when I got back into bed. Didn’t wake up again until 4:15, and then I was wide awake. However, I was thankful to be feeling okay then. It was too early to get up so I lay there and rested until about 5:30. Then I got up and had the shower that I was too weak to get before bed last night. After that, Daddy was up, and we started our day. Took my second dose of medication with breakfast and was thankful to have no reaction. Did up yesterday’s dishes and wrote a birthday e-mail to Connie. Around 9:45, we were off to Lapilo for another visit with Dr. Ludwig. Michela took the vitals and did another EKG. Praise the Lord that my blood pressure and pulse rate were down quite a bit. The EKG still showed fibrillation. Dr. Kevin wants me to go back Thursday for another checkup (he won’t be there, but Dr. Bud will). However, there were no openings on their schedule. They penciled my name in and will call if something opens up. Otherwise, my next visit will be on Monday with Dr. Kevin. We were informed today that we will need to stay in town for two or three months so I can continue to be monitored until they are sure things are stable. After the doctor visit, we went to the NTM store and bought a number of items before coming back to CRMF. Rachel and Karen had been at the store shopping while we were at the doctor’s office. After we got back to CRMF, the Kiari van was out of the workshop and ready for them to use. By the time we got back, it was 12:30. We put groceries away, and then I fixed lunch. After lunch, I had a fairly long nap. Then Daddy and I went out to find some rice and a few other items we needed. We didn’t find any good rice, but we did find some nice potatoes at Papindo so bought a couple large potatoes to add to our supper. There was leftover chicken and carrots from my supper last night. This evening, I wrote an informative e-mail to C&C. Daddy and I tried to listen to a service from VBC Lattimore, but it wasn’t working well. We did see Connie and Bonnie singing a special, but we couldn’t hear much of it. So Daddy and I sang some songs together, read a Psalm, and prayed. |
