May 21. Thankful for some sunshine today. This morning, I finished crocheting a tie back for one of the kitchen curtains. Now I need to do the other one. Bro. Joe came to work on the shed, getting the floor leveled and laying out the pieces for the building itself. After Christy finished doing her and Connie’s laundry, I went with them over to the trailer to clean. It was about 10:30. Daddy came later after Joe left. He took all the trash to the dumpster and scrubbed out the fridge. My, the fridge looked so nice when he finished! We are thinking about bringing the fridge here so we have an extra place for food. After three hours of cleaning, I was beat. It was already 1:30 so Daddy and I went to Subway for lunch. A nap was in order after we got home. I did not hurry to get up. After nap, I did more organizing of the Scripture file. This evening, Daddy and the girls went over to the Parkers for a drop-in farewell get-together for the Makins. “49For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. 50And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.” John 12:49,50 The Father has given us a commandment too, and His commandment is life everlasting. If Jesus spoke only those words which the Father told Him to speak, how much more should we speak only the words that the Father has given us in His holy word. We must speak the words that give life everlasting to those who will hear. May 22. Went to bed about an hour earlier than usual last night, very tired. Was thankful for a good night’s sleep. As we were leaving for church this morning, one of our neighbors was walking by and asked us if we were going to church. We told him yes, and he quickly replied that he doesn’t go to church. We invited him to come to church with us, but he said “No, I don’t go to church. God took my mama away from me when I was 14 years old.” I was sad about that because I know that he doesn’t understand that God is not the author or cause of death. Daddy talked to him a little bit, and he said that he would come by and see us sometime. We made sure we invited him so he would know he is welcome. How I have been praying and asking the Lord to show us how to build a relationship with the people in this neighborhood! Oh, that this might be a beginning. Mrs. Ogle was in charge of ladies’ Sunday School class today. It was a blessing to hear that Melissa, the lady who was saved last week, is excited about reading God’s word and finding a good church to attend where she lives. For our lesson, Mrs. Ogle showed another part of the video by Jim Berg on “Quieting the Soul.” He had a lot of good thoughts on overcoming anxiety and fear. In the main meeting, Pastor Ogle preached on Isaiah 55, an excellent salvation message, and an exciting reminder of the wonderful salvation so freely given to us by our suffering Saviour. This afternoon, Daddy and I talked about changing our shopping to every four to six weeks, like it was in PNG, so that we can give more time to translation. He could do the buying, and I would just go out for the monthly shopping in Charlotte when we take Connie to the chiropractor, and once every four to six months for local shopping and a break from other work. Pastor Ogle’s topic this evening was “What Is Truth?” He didn’t get to finish the whole message, but will finish next week. What a mess our country is in because the truth has been rejected! “Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end.” John 13:1 How delighted I am to think that Jesus loves His own which are in the world, and that He’ll love us unto the end.

May 19. A rainy night and morning. Because of the rain, Daddy and Joe decided to wait on putting the shed up. So we made today our shopping day. A little after 8:30, we went out to WalMart to get a few groceries. I was excited to get fresh corn again, this time at 33¢ an ear. Not a bad price for fresh corn. Then we went across the road to K-Mart where I bought a couple pair of summer shoes - BOGO (50% of the second pair). Next stop was GNC in the mall, and then Sears Hometown store to see about exchanging our washing machine. The woman who works there was quite knowledgeable about the machine and explained that most machines now do make a noise like that because of the way they are made to be energy efficient. She did say, though, that the clothes should not have a lot of lint on them after they are washed. She gave us a number for calling a serviceman to come out and look at it. It could be a manufacturing defect. If the serviceman can’t fix it, then the company will replace it with the same kind or another kind, whichever we may choose. Stopped into the Salvation Army thrift store after that to see if they had any curtains, but there were none; and Daddy ran into Big Lots, while I was in there, to see if they had any bread, but there was none. So on we went to Aldi, our last stop before coming back home. I was happy to get back home. My legs felt very weak today, and it was hard to walk around. Had an extra long nap. Worked on the Scripture file until time to fix supper. Made goulash for supper and cooked lima beans for Christy and Daddy. For my veggie, I warmed up and ate the last leftover ear of corn. May 20. Rained most of the day and raining this evening. It was a good stay-at-home day. We are thankful for the rain as it has been needed. Did three loads of wash this morning. Hung my blouses and dresses on the rack in the laundry room and Daddy’s shirts and trousers on the shower rod in the bathroom. Put a rope up above/behind the washer and drier to hang plastic bags and a couple other little things, and the rest went into the dryer. Daddy and I spent a couple hours checking Mark today and finished chapter 4. We talked about how we could manage our time better so we could spend more time on this very important project. I also did more work on the Scripture print file. “44Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me. 45And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me. 46I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.” John 12:44-46 By faith alone we see God, and by faith alone we see light. May 18. Bro. Joe came a little before 8:00, and he and Daddy went to Lowes to pick up the shed Daddy had bought. After they brought it back, Joe cut away a lot of the brush and some tree branches with his weed whip. Then he went home to get some coffee and a few tools. When he came back, they built the floor for the shed. While they were doing that, I got the rest of the e-mail updates sent off to friends and supporters and wrote a couple e-mails as well. After nap, Daddy and I finished checking Mark 3, and then I worked until supper time on reorganizing more of the translation document. Did dishes right after supper, and then off to church. Pastor Ogle’s teaching tonight was on Joseph’s promotion in Genesis 41. “And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.” John 12:32 May 16. Quite chilly again this morning, around 50º. Not quite as cool as yesterday, but the house had cooled down quite a bit since yesterday so we did run the heat this morning. Today was busy printing update letters and a few newsletters to mail with them, writing a few personal notes, reorganizing the newsletter address list, copying receipts from the e-mail files so they can be printed, and cleaning out some e-mails from the inbox. Daddy and I went for a walk just before supper. It was good to go walking again and be out in the fresh air. There were a lot of people sitting out that we said hello to, but nobody to talk to one on one. “25Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: 26And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?” John 11:25,26 May 17. We thank the Lord for rain this morning, continuing into the afternoon, and for sunshine this evening. It was another day off to Charlotte to take Connie for a consultation with a dentist. We also stopped at TJ’s to exchange some cashews and at BJ’s to look over their store. We had been sent a free 90-day membership coupon in the mail to BJ’s so decided to have a look. It is a bulk store something like Sam’s. We were able to get a few needed items there at a reasonable cost, but it really wouldn’t be worth our time or money to buy regular membership. It was already 3:00 when we got home so no time for a nap before running off to Dr. Prime’s. And no time to stop for lunch either. I did have some snacks in the car, and Daddy made a quick stop at Subway to pick up a sub. He ate a couple bites before we went to Dr. Prime’s, and ate the rest afterward - a late lunch and early supper. I ate the rest of the pizza from our Sunday lunch date at Italian Garden. Then about 4:45 we took a little nap. “24Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit. 25He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal. 26If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.” John 12:24,26 May 15. The morning temperature was in the 40’s, quite a change from the past couple weeks. The ladies’ Sunday school class was a bit different this morning since Mrs. Surrett had had trouble with her contact lens this weekend, and then, on the way to church, because of a loose screw, the lens fell out of her glasses which Dr. Surrett had straightened for her. Since she couldn’t see the small print in her Bible, she used a lesson which she had planned earlier and which involved participation from the ladies in the class. We were divided into two groups and each group was given verses from John chapter 10 to read and to write down things we could learn from the verses. She gave us a guideline of what to look for. There were several visitors in our class from Minnesota who had come down for Kristin S’s wedding yesterday, one of whom was unsaved. Mrs. Ogle had the joy of leading her to the Lord after class. Her name is Melissa. Pastor Ogle preached this morning on the last two verses in James 1, his theme being that “The proof of our worship is in our tongues and our deeds.” After church, Daddy and I were invited out to the Italian Garden for dinner with Timothy M and his father who had come from Oregon to help Timothy and his family move back to Oregon. Timothy just graduated from ABC, plans to do a two-year internship in his home church, and then take the BBTI training, preparing to go out to the mission field right after that, Lord willing, and work on Bible translation among tribal people. His wife wasn’t able to be with him this morning, as their young son had just had a double hernia operation. They were all there this evening, however. This evening, Pastor Ogle taught on evolution versus creation, bringing out some excellent points to show the wonders of creation and the impossibility of evolution. “Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.” John 11:5 May 13. Yes, it was a very busy day today. We thank the Lord that it was somewhat cooler than yesterday. We rearranged the living room to make more space; cleaned; decorated; set up tables to put food on this evening; cut up deli meat, cheese, tomatoes, and cucumbers to put on crackers. Daddy went out to buy a few items and also bought a mop so we could scrub the front porch, as parts of the porch were covered with a green substance from the rains. (likely pollen) When everything else was ready, I made a gingerbread for Christy. People started coming right about 5:00, but not nearly as many as we expected. A number of those invited were not able to come. A lot of other activities going on this weekend. The people across the street had company too -- quite a few children over there who aren’t usually there. They had a barbecue grill out and seemed to be enjoying a good time together. J came over to see what was going on here and to congratulate Christy. “11I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep…. 14 I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.” John 10:11,14 May 14. We were thankful for a cooler day again. Today I was pretty tired after the busy day yesterday. Knees and feet still swollen a lot so didn’t feel like being on my feet to much. Made sure to finish cleaning up the living room after yesterday’s party. Did some crocheting. Fixed a salad, and rice with fried deli meet and lentils for dinner. Did a little bit of computer work. Folded the clothes that were washed on Thursday. Took some pictures of the pretty pink roses climbing up a tree in the back yard. (Probably didn’t do all those things in that particular order, but my tired brain is not remembering the order of the day.) Daddy took some leftover cupcakes out to our backyard neighbors. We had also bagged up some groceries and put them under the mailbox for the letter carrier to take today for needy families. She went away without them, however, so Connie ran after her when she was next door and gave her the bags. She said she thought they were our groceries. :-) Our nap today was interrupted a little sooner than I hoped because Daddy heard a car door shut and thought that our landlord and wife had arrived early. They had, but actually they were leaving already. They had been here while we were napping, and we never heard them at all. They checked the attic for animals, but didn’t find anything. So maybe the noises we hear are on the roof and not in the attic since, they said, they had previously sealed up all the spaces to keep animals out. The only way they could think of that a squirrel might have gotten into the wall and made a nest was if there is a hole under the house. The crawl space is so small, however, that he did not go underneath to check. He sprayed some non-toxic stuff that should keep the animals away. They also sprayed around the whole house with a non-toxic (to humans) bug spray. “27My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: 28And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. 29My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. 30I and my Father are one.” John 10:27-30 May 12. Decided to do laundry this morning because I know tomorrow will be really busy with all the preparations for the grad party. By the time the two loads of laundry were done, it was time to head out to see Dr. Prime. He was quite busy this morning -- one patient already being cared for, and three waiting, including myself. When we left Dr. Prime’s office, we headed over to Walgreens to get a photo printed of Christy in her grad gown and cap. We had to wait around quite a while for someone to print the picture for us. The day was already very warm and humid by noon. I did make sure the rest of the boxes were off the floor of the dining room. So thankful that is done. Wanted to do more housework in the afternoon, but it was too hot. It was a good time to work on the quarterly newsletter. Praise the Lord for His help with that. It is now ready for Christy to print and mail. Later in the afternoon, the Lord sent us a thunderstorm and sun shower. The end of the rainbow was right on the road and in the trees in front of our house. Such pretty pictures God paints. Made a spaghetti pizza for Lew’s and my supper. “The LORD is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me?” Pslam 118:6 May 11. A special day -- Christy’s birthday and also her graduation day from Cleveland Community College. Christy had to be there early so left around 5:00. Daddy and Connie left around 6:30 for the program which is scheduled to start at 7:00. I opted out since it is so hard for me to both stand or sit for any length of time. I just finished doing the dishes (quite a stack of them) and now it is time to sit down for a while and relax. Didn’t get to do much at the computer today - just a little bit of work on the Matthew file. This morning, Daddy and I went out to finish up the shopping. Daddy wanted to stop at Verizon first to pay his phone bill; but when we got there and saw it was closed, he remembered that it doesn’t open until 10:00. So we scooted across the street to Big Lots, picked out some sparkling juice drinks for Friday and a few other things, and then just dawdled around there until almost 10:00 before we checked out. Back across the street to pay the Verizon bill (which didn’t take very long) and then on to WalMart to get a few things. We were thankful to find some cheesecakes and mini cupcakes marked down. Picked those up for Friday’s party. And we were happy to find a Congratulations Grad balloon. It needed a bit more helium, but WalMart was all out and had been for a week so we brought it home as is, which isn’t too bad. Couldn’t find a Happy Birthday helium balloon, but found one on a stick so got it. After we got home, I attached the helium balloon to the weight I had saved from our welcome home balloons in November and stuck the birthday balloon in the center of the weight. Put those out on the front porch next to the mailbox. Then I rearranged the fridge and freezer so I could get everything in it that needed to go in. After that, I prepared and cooked a bunch of broccoli that had been in the fridge a while, and thawed out some spaghetti and meat that I took out of the freezer. We had the spaghetti for dinner along with the rest of the salad I had made yesterday. Put the broccoli away in the fridge for tomorrow. After nap, I cleaned the last two boxes out of the living room. Hooray! Praise the Lord for His strength and help. By then I was feeling weary because of the heat and humidity so sat down to work on Matthew until supper time. Right after supper, I did the dishes. “9I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. 10The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” John 10:9,10 May 9. Most of the day was fairly cool, not the heat that we were told to expect, so we were thankful for that. Time today was spent writing shopping list and e-mails, and getting more of the Scripture file properly laid out. Daddy and I also went for a refreshing walk around 9:00 or so. Before we went for a walk, I was very delighted to finally find the tracts that I had been looking for day after day. After we got back, we did more checking of the Gospel of Mark. I was happy to get a couple more boxes unpacked today too. This afternoon, Christy wanted to know what kind of cake to make me for Mother’s Day. She didn’t have a chance to make anything yesterday. I didn’t really want a cake so asked her if she could make a banana pudding, and that is what she did. So we enjoyed banana pudding for our supper dessert. “He answered and said, A man that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said unto me, Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash: and I went and washed, and I received sight.” John 9:11 He shared his faith with others. May 10. Was thankful for extra strength from the Lord today as I didn’t sleep well last night. Around 9:30, we left for Charlotte, going first to Flying J in SC to get gas (and for Daddy to fill his coffee mug), then on to Trader Joes’s in Charlotte where we did our shopping as quickly as possible so we could get to Connie’s chiropractor appointment. We were about 5 minutes late getting to Dr. Schulman’s, but the adjustment didn’t take long. Next stop was in KM at WalMart Neighborhood Market, but we didn’t find much of what we were looking for. Daddy made a quick stop at Subway in Shelby to get himself some lunch just before we came home. It was about 2:00. Put away groceries in fridge and freezer and left the rest until later. Lay down for about a half hour nap. Then up by 3:10 to get ready to go to Dr. Prime. He did a little adjustment on the back and then worked a while on the neck. No traction today. Afterward, we went and got a few items at Aldi before returning home. Put away the rest of the groceries. Got last week’s journal notes ready and sent them off to Connie. Made a salad and ate some for supper. “35Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God? 36He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him? 37And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee. 38And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him.” John 9:35-38 May 1. Praise the Lord for rain during the night last night. It must have rained quite heavily for a while as there was 1.6 inches in the rain gauge this morning. Around 1:00 this afternoon, Pastor Overbay called Daddy and asked if we could come earlier and meet him at the motel before the evening service. His wife was having labor pains, and he didn’t know if he would have to be at the hospital in the evening, or not. So as soon as they finished talking, we loaded up the car and headed out. We took the shortest route, thinking it would take us about three hours. The mountain roads, however, curved back and forth, back and forth like a snake; and although the scenery was beautiful and we enjoyed the ride, our time was running away, and we figured we wouldn’t get there on time. All of a sudden, we saw a sign that pointed to I81. That’s where we needed to go, but our route would take us much farther before we reached it. We stopped and looked at the map and found that this new route would go straight up to I81 on a road that looked very small on the map. Decided to give it a try. The road wasn’t any smaller than the ones we had been on, although no less winding. After a while, we saw a sign that read, “Glade Spring”, 16 miles. We knew we were just about to our destination, but time had run short. Daddy stopped and called the pastor, told him where we were, and asked if it was too late to meet him at the motel. He said to come on. We arrived there around 4:45+, just enough time for him to get us checked into our room. He had to run on to the church to teach the youth. We went and put things in our room and then headed over to the church ourselves so we could set up the display and the DVD. The meeting was at 6:00. Enjoyed talking with a few people beforehand and many others afterward. When everyone had left, we went out to Subway with the Overbays and enjoyed a time of fellowship with them. Would have loved to have spent more time with them. Mrs. Overbay’s labor pains had stopped so she was at the meeting tonight. I was glad she liked the baby blanket I had crocheted for the new baby. It gave me much pleasure to make it. They have two other precious children - Josiah, almost 7; and Abigail, 4 1/2. We were grateful for Pastor Overbay filling our van with gas before we went back to the motel for the night. It’s a really nice motel room - probably the largest we have ever slept in. It’s clean, and looks like it has been recently painted. There’s a king bed, a sofa with a hide-away bed, a table and two chairs, a desk and a chair at the desk, a long dresser, microwave and fridge, two night stands, good-sized bathroom, closet, and still lots of floor space to move around. The room goes from one side of the building all the way to the other, with a huge picture window which lets in lots of light. We are very grateful for God’s provision. “16Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me. 17If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.” John 7:16,17 |
