May 19. Praise the Lord for His strength for today! Did two loads of laundry this morning, and spent the rest of the morning packing personal belongings to be sent later to PNG. That’s quite a job so want to work on it little by little. There are lots of things to sort through and decide what we’ll need there and what we won’t. This afternoon, after getting the clothes in and hanging things up in the closet, I wrote a couple e-mails and worked on youth lessons. “9But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: 10Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.” I Peter 2:9,10 How wonderful that God has made us, who were not His people, and who had not obtained mercy, to be a chosen generation too, just as His people of old; and to be a holy priesthood, a holy nation, and a people all His own. He did so that we might proclaim the glory of God, showing to all that the God who made them is worthy to be loved. May 20. This morning, I got an anniversary card ready to mail and wrote a thank you note. Put more salt, baking soda, and vinegar down the bathroom drains to try to get those cleared out better. After a while, we went over to look at a house. They are wanting to rent it to people who aren’t loud and boisterous and who won’t tear it up. Although the girls are looking to buy, and although the house is a wee bit small, the offer is hard to pass up and may give Christy more of a chance to save before buying. It is something we need to pray about. After we got back, I swept the living room and kitchen floors and did some spot treating of the kitchen floor. Put chicken on to cook for dinner and enjoyed something different today -- a dish of veggies (beans and broccoli) with chicken gravy. Daddy had rice with the chicken gravy, and broccoli. This afternoon, I worked on the youth lessons, cleaned a few books out of the office bookcase, talked with my sister. “11But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice: let them ever shout for joy, because thou defendest them: let them also that love thy name be joyful in thee. 12For thou, LORD, wilt bless the righteous; with favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield.” Psalm 5:11,12 It is a joy to memorize these verses about joy. Joy comes as I put my trust in the LORD. May 21. This morning, Daddy and I went out to Manna Baptist again. The Pastor gave Daddy the names of a couple other churches, and we went to one this evening. It was very southern, and the people were very friendly and made us feel welcome. The pastor gave Daddy some time to tell about our ministry, and they took up a love offering for us at the end of the meeting. The Lord sent us rain this afternoon and evening and the temperature had cooled down to the mid-60’s by late afternoon.

May 17. Busy this morning getting the box of Sunday school lessons ready to be mailed to JAARS for shipment to PNG. Looked for some clothing items to fill up the extra space so every space has something useable. Put in some socks that Daddy wanted to get rid of, a crocheted baby outfit, crocheted preemie hat, and crocheted scarf. Also wrote a thank you note to Doug & Jean. Most of the rest of the morning was spent in the kitchen making sweet potato soup and then making pizza. Daddy left around 11:15 or so to go to Gaffney and pick up milk for C&C, and didn’t get home until after 1:15. I was working on notes for the missionary training program; but the brain was slowing down, and I was ready for a nap as soon as Daddy got his lunch. This afternoon, I whipped up some of the sweet potato soup, and "J" came over and picked it up to take to Doug and Jean. Then I whipped up some for myself before doing dishes. Pastor Ogle concluded his teaching on Exodous 19 this evening. There was just a small group there tonight. When we came home, there was a mess of dirt and pollen all over the front steps and porch. (One of our neighbors had kindly mowed our law for us) While I was sweeping that off, “V” walked by and asked for more tract booklets. I had to go get the key to get them out of the car so she said she would stop and get them on the way back. She had to go down the road to deliver something. Would like to give her a Bible too if she will accept it. (She never did come back, but still praying and watching for the opportunity to see her again.) “15But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; 16Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.” I Peter 1:15,16 May 18. Not quite as hot today, but humid. Fixed fish for breakfast to go with my rice. As soon as I was ready, Daddy and I went out shopping. When we were almost to Ingles, I realized that I hadn’t brought the shopping list. Too late to go back. We remembered everything that was on the list, however, except for the laundry detergent; but it was cheaper at WalMart anyway. After Ingles, we stopped back at the house to get the shopping list and drop off the few items we had bought at Ingles. We had done Aldi shopping in Hickory on Tuesday, but made a quick stop there to get one of the double rockers which was on sale. Then headed to WalMart for the rest of the shopping. By the time we finished there, my legs were done for the day. This humid weather isn’t very nice to them. Arrived home around 11:30. Put food away and Daddy went off to Subway to get his lunch. I whipped up some soup for my lunch; and after eating that, got ready for nap. Daddy came in just as I was about to lie down. This afternoon I got a small packet of information ready to go to John Gray, things he had asked us to send for obtaining our visas. Worked on notes for the missionary training school and then on lessons for a children’s Bible club (We are praying that we might have one in our neighborhood this summer). Daddy went out this afternoon to mail the package of Sunday school lessons to Waxhaw to be shipped to PNG, and Christy & Connie went out to a store nearby so Connie could inquire about consigning some crocheted items. Then they went to Sandy’s Christmas to get a few things. Found out it wouldn’t really pay for her to consign them there. “4To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious…. 6Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded. 7Unto you therefore which believe he is precious….” I Peter 2:4-7 How precious is Jesus, my Savior to me! and to all who believe! May 15. Charlotte day. Left here around 9:00 so we could go to TJ’s before the chiropractor and get home early like we did last month. Stopped first at the post office to mail a letter. Then Daddy decided to take Marion Street out to 74. That would have been fine except that we ran into stopped traffic along that two-lane road. A car and a truck were part way off and part way on the road. An accident? We’re not sure. So many cars kept coming from the other direction, we wondered if we would ever get around. The driver of the car finally pulled it off the road farther as the line of cars was getting too long. That made enough room then for everyone to go by. Arrived at TJ’s a little after 10:00. Did our shopping there and received a pretty pink rosebud with a stem of baby’s breath. Thank you, TJ's, and thank you, Lord. Daddy dropped Connie and me off at Dr. Schulman’s and went on over to Neighborhood WalMart while Connie and I went into Dr. Schulman’s. We got done about the same time and headed home. Arrived home around 12:30. Put away food, and had lunch and nap. After nap, Daddy and I went over to visit Doug and Jean for a while. We took them a prayer card and brochure and for Jean a celosia plant for Mother’s Day. When we came back, Daddy and I brought Christy’s and Connie’s clothes in. Christy was off shopping and Connie had cooking to do. Very warm and muggy out this afternoon - in the 80’s today. Completed the plan for the new display board and got a picture file set up to take to WalMart for printing. “7Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain. 8Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh…. 10Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience. 11Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy.” James 5:7,8,10,11 May 16. Hot and humid again this afternoon, although the morning was quite pleasant. Another very tiring day so I am thankful for God’s grace and strength - “as thy days, so shall thy strength be.” Washed hair and showered. Had breakfast and quiet time and put clothes in the washing machine. Made a special card for a special friend, Pat. Left for Hickory a little after 9:00. Went to Aldi first, as we had decided to do our Aldi shopping while we were up there so we won’t have so much to do on Thursday. Then we went to Sears and returned the blender and picked up our new eye glasses. Headed home after that, making a pit stop at Ingles in north Shelby and picking up a pack of small garbage bags. Arrived home around 1:15. Put away groceries. Had lunch. And was very happy to have a nap This afternoon, we brought clothes in, and I folded clothes before spending some time on the youth lessons for GIBC. May 14. Mother’s Day. Mrs. Surrett taught this morning on “Crowning Virtues of Womanhood” -- going through Bible verses about a devotional spirit, modesty, liberality, wisdom and virtue. Pastor Ogle preached on “The Influence of Women on the Gospel.” He told about Mary the mother of Jesus, Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Martha, and Salome and how they served the Saviour and impacted others through their lives. At the end of the meeting, the Brennemans joined the church, and then the pastors’ wives gave out lovely red roses to each of the ladies present, married and single, mother or not. Received a couple very lovely plaques from my secret sister along with some other nice gifts. My sweet daughters gave me a pretty card that Connie had made and a gift card for Hobby Lobby. We took Mrs. M home and then headed to Grover to get gas. There were so many cars, however, that we left and went to the next exit to Flying J. It was well after 1:00 when we arrived home and 2:45 before we lay down for nap. I didn’t get up until 4:15 so didn’t have time to do much before we left for church this evening. This evening, Pastor Ogle started on a series of messages on worldliness. Tonight was mainly introduction with a lot of good points to ponder. “Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.” James 4:17 Lord, help me to do the good that I know to do and not to sin. May 12. Much cooler today. Went down to about 63º over night and only went up about one degree before it went down below the overnight high in the afternoon. Today was another go, go, go day. First order of business was laundry. While clothes were washing, I got a card and note ready to go to a dear sister in Christ, Barbara L. After we hung out the clothes, we made a quick trip to Lowes to find flowers to give to a couple neighbors for Mother’s Day. Found some pretty little plants called celosia and bought a couple plain pots to put them in. The pots were a little big, however; and when we got home, we learned that there wasn’t any more potting soil around. We didn’t want to go back and buy more potting soil today. I got busy then in the kitchen as it was soup making day -- carrot-zucchini-mushroom soup today, with lentils. After I got that on to cook, I did the dishes so Christy wouldn’t have so many this evening. There was already quite a stack there since the last time I had done them was yesterday afternoon. By the time I finished dishes it was just about noon. Time to eat, right? Instead we decided to run down to the Bargain Hunter’s Thrift Store and see if we could find a couple pretty little containers that the plants would fit in without needing extra dirt. I was happy to find a pretty off-white soup mug with blue veggies on it and a white ceramic container with hearts on it -- 69cents each. Then I took a quick look at the jumper/dress section. Nothing there. And a quick look at the stuffed toy section. Oh, look! A cute stuffed pig for only a quarter. Back home for lunch. And before we got to nap, Christy came home. She had gotten off at 1:00 today. Had a couple more gifts -- an umbrella for teacher appreciation week, and a rose that was leftover from Muffins for Mom day. It was 1:45 when we got settled down for nap. After nap, I transplanted the celosia into the pretty containers. This morning, I started memorizing Psalm 4:3-5 and hope to memorize 6-8 later. “3But know that the LORD hath set apart him that is godly for himself: the LORD will hear when I call unto him. 4Stand in awe, and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah. 5Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and put your trust in the LORD.” May 13. This morning it was time to get gifts and cards together for Mother’s Day -- one for a secret sister and one for a neighbor. While Christy and Connie were gone to market, we delivered the gift for our backyard neighbor -- a celosia plant for Vaughn and a thank you card with a few dollars for Michael in appreciation for his mowing our lawn. We have a plant for another neighbor too, but didn’t get a chance to take it over today. Transferred pictures to the computer and fixed those. Then spent some time with Christy in her room starting to clean out one of the file cabinets that she has. Did more cleaning out of that in the afternoon. And in the evening, I worked on the plans for our new display board. “13Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom…. 17But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.” James 3:13,17 May 10. The beginning of the night was very warm, and it was after midnight before I finally got to sleep. The first thing to do this morning after breakfast and quiet time was make the shopping list for tomorrow. After I printed that out, I also printed out a good copy of Lait I Kamap to add to our mission display items. Daddy and I looked over the list of things we need to send for getting our visas. Then he and Connie went to the bank -- Connie to cash her GIGANTIC :-) check from the courthouse, and Daddy to get a document notarized. (He wasn't able to get it notarized though) I proofread a couple more chapters of The Isles are Singing and sent them to Connie for posting. When Daddy & Connie got back, he and I went for a walk. This afternoon, I wrote another chapter in the book, did the dishes, cut Daddy’s hair, and got ready for church. We arrived early and had time to relax and talk with people. Pastor Ogle started teaching on Exodus 19 this evening. The theme was “You must approach God on His terms and in His timing.” Daddy got a migraine part way through the meeting and went out to take some aspirin. He came back in later and after the meeting, he talked with Naomi about notarizing the document. She said that she has to witness a signature so she said to make a copy of the document on another paper and add other wording underneath (which she will send us) so it can be done officially with hers and Daddy’s signature. I had a bad headache as well and went out right away after the meeting so I could get something to eat. “3But thou, O LORD, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head. 4I cried unto the LORD with my voice, and he heard me out of his holy hill. Selah. 5I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the LORD sustained me.” Psalm 3:3-5 Have started reading through the Psalms and memorizing a verse or verses from each chapter -- all of Psalm 1, Psalm 2:12b, and today Psalm 3:3-5 and 8. As I look at Psalm 3:3, how thankful I am that the Lord is my shield (my protector, my defence), my glory (my abundance, my full supply - all that I need, my splendor), and the lifter up of mine head - He lifts my head up high when it is bowed down with trouble or sorrow; He gives joy and deliverance. In the worst of times, God's people can lift up their heads with joy, knowing that all shall work for good to them. Verse 4 reminds me that I can bring all my cares and griefs to God, and He hears me. And verse 5 reminds me that I can sleep peacefully and wake with the assurance that the LORD has sustained me. He has supported me. He has been a firm foundation upon which I can lean and find rest for my weary soul. May 11. What a busy day it has been! When I went to the kitchen for breakfast this morning, I realized that I had not cooked any grain. So I put some kamut on to cook and started making a smoothie to hold me over until the grain was done. While I was working on the smoothie, I forgot about the kamut; and next thing I knew it was boiling over and made quite a mess all over the stove. Finally got that cleaned up (as much as I could until the stove could cool off), finished making my smoothie, and drank it. By then the kamut was done, and I had some of it with some fish. In the midst of all that, I also wrote a thank you note to “A” for all the flowers she has put in our van whenever Daddy has gotten an oil change or other work done. Around 9:00, we were on our way to Aldi. I forgot to take my sweater in so found myself getting pretty chilly and started hurrying. Then Daddy started getting a migraine again, and he went out to the car to take some aspirin. I quickly finished up the shopping and checked out. We loaded some of the groceries into the cooler and put the rest in a shopping bag in the back of the van before taking off for WalMart. We spent a lot of time at WalMart today, looking for things we couldn’t find. Finally headed home around 11:30. Put away groceries. Had lunch. Got out spring decorations (finally) and put away winter ones. We all signed Christy’s Hobby Lobby gift card. Then Daddy & I went for nap. After nap, I decorated the living room with streamers, wrapped and wrapped and wrapped Christy’s gift, made a marble cake, and did the mountain of dishes. I’m thankful the dishwashing was done before supper so I could relax this evening. Then it was supper time. About 6:30, we got together to celebrate Christy’s 45th birthday, first singing “Happy Birthday” and having her open her cards and gift -- a stuffed frog with a gift card for Hobby Lobby -- and then having marble cake and ice cream. Spent some time this evening looking for ideas for creating an attractive poster and looking for ethnic photos to go with it. Connie gave me an early Mother’s Day gift before bed this evening -- a black and white granny square pillow with a black and white sheep head on it. Very cute. May 8. Robin babies are nine days old today. Getting cute and looking more like robins. Today’s business included Daddy’s and my work of cleaning out the bathroom sink and tub drains; getting this past week’s journal notes ready and sent off to Connie; printing monthly updates and corresponding envelopes and giving them to Connie to stuff, stamp, seal, and send; preparing updates to e-mail and sending those; resizing Luke 9-16. Sat outside for a while after supper before it got too cool out. It only got up to about 71 or 72º today and is cooling down quickly. “Invisible” mosquitoes bit me on the same place on each hand. And how they do itch! Ugh! “Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.” James 1:19 Lord, help me to be a good listener, to weigh carefully my words before I speak, to be slow in becoming angry. May 9. Warm and muggy, but cool in the house because the sun is overhead now and doesn’t shine through the windows. (Our house faces north and south) All the baby birds have flown away now -- only ten days old. I didn’t know they would grow up so quickly. I’m glad I got one last picture yesterday morning. Cooked fish this morning to go with my grains. Did laundry and put fresh sheets on the bed. There were just a few updates to prepare and e-mail out. Then Daddy and I went to Verizon to pay the phone bill, to Hobby Lobby to get a gift card for Christy’s birthday, to the Got Books store to sell some of C&C’s books (they are taking a very limited number because of too much over-stock so the girls only got $10), to Big Lots to get a few food items, and to the thrift store to get rid of the rest of the books. It was almost lunch time when we got back home. Spent a little time on the Scripture print file and finished that up this afternoon. Praise the Lord, that is all re-sized. After nap, I got the laundry down and dawdled a bit outside in the sunshine while I folded sheets and pillow cases. Praise the Lord for fresh air and sunshine. When the resizing of the Scripture print file was done, I printed out a copy of the Gospel of John, and, Lord willing, we will begin checking that soon. Wanted to sit outside this evening; but yesterday evening, I got huge welts from the mosquito bites so will wait until we get something to repel those critters before sitting out again. “22But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves…. 25But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.” James 1:22,25 Lord, help me always to be a doer of that which I hear and not to deceive myself. May I not forget that which I hear, but do the work You want me to do, that I may rejoice in Your blessing. May 7. A chilly morning again, but sunny and comfortable enough for just a sweater as an over-garment by the time we left for church. Mrs. Surrett started another lesson on faithfulness this morning. Pastor Ogle preached on The Valley after the Mountain Top -- what was taking place in the valley when they came down from the mount of transfiguration. Quite a few people were missing in church now that the college students have gone for the summer, and several others were away. There were also several visitors. It was very refreshing this evening to visit at Manna Baptist and to be taught the Word, and to search the Scriptures together and read verses throughout the Word. Pastor Stevens used Psalm 19:14 as his text, “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.” His theme was pleasing God with our speech and with our thoughts, and meditating on God’s word and on His works. Much food for thought. Manna Baptist Church has been faithful to pray for us, and we visited there to let them know how much we appreciate their prayers. May 5. A much cooler day today. Temperature went up and down and back up again today as the morning sunshine gave way to clouds and wind; and later in the afternoon, the clouds and wind were replaced by sunshine. The morning was busy with clothes washing (two loads today) and soup making. The electrician came to replace the receptacle that had been burned out by lightning. Praise the Lord, the microwave is not damaged as we thought it was, and neither is the blender. This afternoon, I wrote the monthly update, and brought in and put away clothes. “2My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; 3Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. 4But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.” James 1:2-4 May 6. A chilly day today, but a more relaxing day. This morning, I went through e-mails - wrote down prayer requests, saved some files, deleted some e-mails, wrote a couple e-mails. Later in the morning, Daddy and I went out to Office Max and bought a printer and ink to send to PNG. Also got a few kid’s scissors that were on sale, and a surge protector for Christy and Connie as theirs had been zapped by lightning a few times. When we came back, I looked for some crochet patterns, and in the afternoon started a crochet project. “5If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. 6But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. 7For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. 8A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.” James 1:5-8 May 3. A very long, tiring day. Daddy and I left the house a little before 9:00 and headed for Sears in Hickory. Our eye exams were scheduled for 10:30 and 10:45. Since we arrived early, we looked around at small kitchen appliances downstairs and then at eyeglass frames in the optometrist office until time for our exams. When we were done with eye exams and purchasing frames, we went back downstairs and bought a blender that was on sale. Now, I thought, here is something that will do a better job in blending up my soup. Got a picture of the robin babies. They are four days old today. From Sears, we headed up the road to Ollies. Went the wrong direction, however, so had to come back and go the other way. Looked around for quite a while there, but only purchased a few small food items. Then we tried to find a thrift store that Daddy had written down directions for but had left home. Couldn’t find that so finally went to Golden Corral and had lunch. It was a little after 2:00 by then. Headed right home after lunch, and didn’t get home until after 4:00. Put things away and had a nap. Then it was time to try out the blender. We did our best to follow instructions for assembly, but try as we may, the jug nut would not lock into the base. We were afraid to use it so loose and wobbly. Packed it back up to look into later. Got out the old leaky one speed slow blender and blended my soup. Hurried and heated it up and got ready for church and drank my soup on the way. Pastor Ogle taught on Exodus 18 this evening - A Better Way to Lead. “Leadership is learning from and leaning on others.” Enjoyed talking with Mary M a few minutes before the meeting. Sarah C said that she was able to take her finals at Ambassador. Praise the Lord for answered prayer! Talked a little with Lazara and Regina after the meeting. Regina has sold her house and will be moving to New Mexico to be near her daughter that lives there. Josh will be moving to Georgia to attend a tech school. Was also able to chat with Mrs. C a bit while we were waiting for Christy. And then give Abigail a hug as she was leaving. She’ll be heading for New Zealand this Friday to spend some time with her parents before going to Nova Scotia to work as a counselor at a Bible Camp. After we got home, there were still dishes to do; and by the time that was done, it was bed time for sure. “15By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name. 16But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.” Hebrews 13:15,16 Along with the living sacrifice of our bodies, God requires these sacrifices - thanksgiving, doing good, and sharing a part in others’ needs. May 4. Another busy day - shopping day. After I made the shopping list, we headed out to Aldi. It was somewhere around 9:00. Made a stop at Office Max first to see how long the sale lasts on the Epson printer. Sale goes through Saturday. Aldi was next and then on up to Sears Hometown to see if the owner there knew anything about the blender. No, that definitely wasn’t in his line of knowledge. On our way to Sears, we saw that there was only one lane of traffic coming from 74 east toward WalMart, and traffic was backed up almost all the way to Sears. At first we thought, “Oh, no, it will take forever to get back to WalMart.” But then we thought, “No problem. We can just cut across to Earl Road and come down that way.” So that’s what we did. Did our shopping at WalMart, and arrived home a little after 11:30. Put away food and then had lunch and nap. Busy in the kitchen this afternoon - made herb tea; washed up a couple containers of strawberries and a container of blueberries; cooked chicken and made gravy for it for tomorrow’s dinner; made pizza for supper. Decided to wait until tomorrow to make a new pot of soup. Today has been full enough. “20Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, 21Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is wellpleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.” Hebrews 13:20,21 In verses 15,16, the Lord showed us some sacrifices with which he is well-pleased. In these verses here I see that it is through the work of Jesus Christ and the blood of the everlasting covenant that God Himself is the one who works in us those things that are well-pleasing in His sight. It is through Jesus Christ and not through our own flesh that we are able to offer to Him these sacrifices. |
