July 8. Praise the Lord that my back pain has gone down a bit. I still need to move very carefully. Was thankful for Anna Jean’s help in the kitchen today — peeling and cutting up potatoes, kaukau, and onions which all went into a pot for soup. Added some lentils and seasonings too; and before blending, I added the leftover carrots and little dab of leftover pasta sauce, milk powder, and extra water and salt. That will give us a tasty meal for several days. July 9. The morning was cold with a thin overcast. Didn’t warm up until after 11:00, and the day started cooling down by 4:00 It was already 8:45 before I finished my breakfast. Then I made the bed, folded yesterday’s laundry, and finished my quiet time before working on the Scripture booklet I am setting up. We were happy to get out in the sunshine later in the morning. We walked around the fence and around to the front of the house. I was thankful that my back was doing a bit better so I could walk a little bit. I even pulled a few weeds, but for the most part the ground is too dry to pull weeds out. The ground is very dry, and the hillside opposite the east side of the fence is crumbling and falling down. Before coming inside, I took a few pictures of the one lonely rose on the tiny rose plant. Worked on the Scripture booklet again in the afternoon and evening. Apekio came by later in the afternoon and talked a while. She faces a lot of hardship because of her husband’s lifestyle, but maintains a cheerful attitude and a quiet trust in the Lord. She strives to encourage her children to stand strong in the Lord, too. She has been memorizing Bible verses and determines to maintain a meek and quiet spirit. I took time to pray with her before she left. Repeka came by a little later and brought a couple popo. Hadn’t seen her for a while, and it is always a joy to see her. Wish I had more contact with these ladies. Made a popo crisp this afternoon. Before bed, we went out to look at the stars and the moon. There were lots of clouds so couldn’t see many stars. The moon was bright (a little more than a half moon) and had a huge ring around it. The sky was very clear within the ring. Tried to get a picture of the moon and ring, but do not have a strong enough camera. The moon showed up like a full moon in the pictures. July 10. After breakfast and quiet time and making the bed, we enjoyed getting out in the sunshine again and drinking in the warmth and fresh air. I was thankful that my back was feeling better enough that I could walk the short trail to the airstrip. After we got back, Daddy took a nap because he did not sleep well last night; and I transferred pictures to the computer and fixed them. Also read a chapter in II Samuel. The rest of the morning, I worked on the Scripture booklet and cut Daddy’s hair. This afternoon, I washed my hair, worked on the Scripture booklet, and made a few tortillas. Somebody has a rumor going around here now that we will be leaving here right after the elections. This evening, we listened to a good message by Mr. Matthew Hanke entitled “Forty Days After the Mountain Top.”

July 6. After Lewis and I spent a good amount of time searching for the flash drive that I use for transferring files from his computer to mine, we finally gave up. We could not think of any other places to look. All we could think of is that a rat carried it off somewhere. We are both pretty sure that it was sitting out on the desk last night, but there was no sign of it this morning. But what would the rat want with a flash drive? We do know that they carry away large items and somehow manage to maneuver them through small spaces and hide them in the wall or wherever they are making a nest — rags, plastic bags, bottle lids, sticks, etc. After our fruitless search, I wrote a couple e-mails — sent progress report to Pastor Ogle and a wee note to C&C. It took a while for the modem to work well enough to send them, but, praise the Lord, they finally went out. Was thankful for the Lord’s help today in writing the monthly update. Topias came and cut more firewood for us. He is strong and is a hard worker and deserved good wages. There was no school again today as Anna Jean helped somebody carry coffee. Ana thought that she was going to be carrying coffee, too (for the church), but they decided to have a plane come in and get it instead. LBC is making their yearly collection of coffee from the church members to meet the amount decided on for their five-year plan to collect enough money to build a new church building. Since Anna Jean wasn’t here for school, Ana came and worked on answering questions for her lessons, coloring her outreach pictures, and preparing to teach the next outreach lesson. I was very, very tired today and was thankful for the time to take an extra-long nap. Just the strain of trying to get through the day with my back out makes me quite tired. In the evening, I worked on the II Corinthians outline. July 7. After breakfast and quiet time, I revised the monthly update I had written yesterday as I wasn’t quite satisfied with what I had done. Then I got the updates for mailing all updated and onto a flash drive to send to Christy. This afternoon, I wrote an e-mail to C&C with acknowledgments for the e-mail updates and got that update onto the flash drive. Daddy and I went out in the sunshine for a little while, and then Daddy went on up to the airstrip. I sent the camera with him so he could get pictures of the airstrip in case MAF wants to see some pictures before reopening the airstrip if they approve. Somebody went and burned the grass right in the middle of the airstrip even though the pilot has told them not to do that and Daddy has reminded them several times. They apparently do not pass the word on to others. July 4. It has been a busy and painful day. Put my back out when making the bed, pushing the mattress back up to the top as I usually do. The mattress is not heavy, and I thought I was pushing with even pressure on both sides, but my back went snap. After breakfast and quiet time, I wrote a birthday e-mail to Beth. Today is her birthday and is also American Independence Day. Tomorrow will be remembrance of my spiritual independence day — 72 years. Praise the Lord! Finished the rest of the outreach coloring, and then started working on the progress report and finished that in the afternoon. Made yeast biscuits for my dinner to put spaghetti sauce on. Then I got out the blender and whipped up the greens I had cooked a couple days ago, adding the leftover pumpkin broth and some seasonings. That would be our veggie for dinner, but in soup form, since I have a hard time chewing the greens. Later, while the biscuits were cooking, I cooked the spaghetti and made the meat sauce. In the afternoon, I made yogurt. There was no school today because Anna Jean helped Rex carry coffee and had not come back. Ana was happy to have the day off too as her family was busy gathering money to buy her brother’s bride, a daughter of Poqo. In the evening, I worked on the II Corinthians outline. July 5. Praise the Lord, I was able to sleep pretty well last night. The back still has quite a bit of pain today but a little bit less than yesterday. I was thankful that Anna Jean showed up to do laundry this morning. She didn’t get back from her coffee journey until 1:00 in the morning. Yane wanted her to wait for him to get back from town, and he didn’t get back until 9:00 p.m.. Then they walked back together. After she washed and hung out clothes, she did some weeding among the flowers. There were carrots to peel and cut up after she came inside. Then she had a cup of coffee and some bananas and afterward played the keyboard. Daddy and I changed the office around so his computer is no longer facing the window. Even with the curtains closed, the sun was too bright for him. Computer time was given to making sure certain words were translated and spelled consistently in the New Testament translation. July 1. Quite a busy morning. Got laundry ready to wash, and put a load in the machine shortly before Anna Jean came. Zephaniah was with her this morning. Made a small pot of tea for the first part of my breakfast. Then I sorted and washed greens so Anna Jean could cut them up later. Judy came to practice computer so while she was doing that and Anna Jean was hanging out clothes, Daddy and I took the camera and walked up the airstrip to where the men were cutting grass so we could get some pictures. We asked Judy to look after the door while we were gone. It felt good to get out there in the sunshine as the house was very cold, and the outside temperature when we got up was only 52º. It was still in the 50’s when we went up to the airstrip, but felt much warmer in the sunshine. Some of the men took pictures of us, too, with all the “boys” who had been cutting grass.* When we got back to the house, a young lady named Abigail was waiting outside with eggs to sell. We sent her around to the front door, and we went inside. In the house, Anna Jean was warming her hands by the wood stove. She let Abigail in and checked the eggs. The seven eggs were all good, and Abigail bought yarn with her K5. We learned that she is Murasoru’s youngest child. A few minutes later, Mata came with a nice bunch of bananas. Praise the Lord for answered prayer in sending us bananas. It has been a while since we have had bananas or popo. She also wanted yarn in exchange for the bananas. After she and Judy left, I had time to warm up a couple pancakes, eat my breakfast, and finish reading Jon 17. Anna Jean, in the meantime, had cut up the greens and started sweeping the floors. Little Zeph was down on the floor with the dustpan and brush, coming behind her to pick up the dirt she had swept up. When the sweeping was done, Anna Jean and Zeph had some coffee and cookies, and then she practiced keyboard and Zeph played with the plastic building bricks. I made the bed and took time for prayer. Daddy worked on getting and sending e-mails; After some time and many megabytes had passed, a couple e-mails finally came in, and the one I had written went out. Praise the Lord. The men finished the work on the airstrip and came down to the house to get water to drink. Then Wan came to see Daddy (Wan hadn’t been around for a while) and see what work Daddy had for him to do. Wan agreed to cut firewood tomorrow. The helicopter came to pick up Mera. He had stayed here for several days to rest. Apparently the campaigning was taking a lot out of him, and he appreciated the quiet, remote place to rest for a while. This afternoon, Wenke brought three popo. Praise the Lord for popo again. We have missed it. I washed one and was going to cut it up. Wiped out the washing machine first and went to hang the rag in the bathroom to dry. Whew! What is that awful smell? Oh, no! A dead rat. We haven’t had a dead rat in the house for a long time. Daddy and I pulled the bathtub out to see if it were under there, but no sign of it. Just an old rag and a small plastic bag. Can it be in the wall? We thought we had that wall secured, but it doesn’t smell like it. Nehemiah came by to get his phone, and he does not look good at all. Still has a bad headache. Said that the health workers told him he “just has a headache,” and that’s all they treated him for. However, he has had a severe headache for about a week now. It doesn’t seem like “just a headache.” No school this afternoon, as Ana went up the mountain to meet Nuanda. Miriam came by, too, with another popo, not as ripe so I put it away for a little later. Before supper, I got the pictures (taken this morning) transferred to the computer. Then got the biggest popo cut up, putting a little less than half into a container for myself, and the rest of it into a pan to make popo crisp for Daddy. July 2. Before bed last night, Daddy and I went out to look at the stars. The sky was so clear, and there were millions of stars and galaxies. A beautiful sight to remind us of the greatness of our God. Quite a busy day today. 52º this morning so I fixed some hot oat bran first to try to warm up my insides. In the meantime, Daddy got a fire going in the wood stove. I washed a popo to use for a popo pie later. After breakfast, quiet time, and making the bed, I finished coloring the picture I started last night. Then I read a chapter in I Samuel. Started working on the II Corinthians outline, but soon Wan and Topias came. The plan was for them to cut firewood, but first we gave them the job of finding the dead rat. It turned out to be quite a task. They had to open up the whole wall behind the bathtub. We thought we had secured that wall against rats getting in, but this creature found a way in somehow. At first they couldn’t find anything, and were just about to put the wall back together when Wan spotted the rat. Thank the Lord for helping them find it so we wouldn’t have to put up with the stench of a dead rat for a couple weeks. The rat was smack dab in the middle of the wall, on a cross pole. They got that smelly creature thrown out and then had to put the wall back together, clean up the mess on the floor, and put the bathtub back. By then it was already noon and a little after. Too late to cut firewood, but they offered to go ahead and cut a little bit anyway so we don’t run out; and they will come back Monday and cut more. By the time we had eaten dinner, it was time for nap. Was thankful for a good, uninterrupted nap today. This afternoon, I got the popo cut up and made the popo pie. It was done in time for dessert for supper. Even though we don’t have any lemons now, or cinnamon either, it still tasted good. I had mixed in some marmalade and added ginger and cloves. (Those are the only two sweet spices we have right now.) A young boy brought a few small tomatoes this morning so I washed and cut up a couple of those and also cut up the last cucumber. Daddy was talking with Tomas so I had time to spray the bottom of the bathtub with bleach solution and the rest of the tub with disinfectant before supper. Used a wet rag to wash down the sides and top edge around the tub, and then rinsed the whole tub with clean water. After supper, I swept the bathroom floor a little more, and after I finished washing dishes, I used the dish water to wash the floor. Apekio came shortly after I had started dishes. She had been looking at market for bananas for us for a couple weeks and hadn’t been able to find any. Now that we have already gotten bananas, she found some this afternoon. They are very, very ripe, however, so we’ll need to eat them up in a hurry. The ones Mata brought aren’t quite ready yet. Apekio was tired after a busy day so sat and rested a while and talked while I was finishing dishes. Then she left, and I dipped out the dish water into a small bucket and washed the bathroom floor by the tub. Soon the bath water was hot. I was very grateful for a bath as it had been a hot afternoon. By the time bath was done, it was snack time and then time for our devotions together. July 3. Praise the Lord for answered prayer in sending rain during the night and watering the dry earth. More rain is still needed to water the parched and thirsty ground. It was a joy to be able to call Christy and Connie this morning and talk with them for a little over an hour. Time just goes too fast. After that, we went outside a while to warm up in the sunshine. After coming back inside, I was encouraged by a short Bible study about encouragement. Computer time was spent working on the II Corinthians outline. Also colored some outreach pictures. This evening, we listened to a message from Dr. Childs on forgiveness, based on the book of Philemon. Then we sang some hymns together. “Blessed Redeemer” went well with the message. June 29. It was late morning before I got a chance to make the bed or read a portion in I Samuel. Had to make more pancakes for breakfast as I only had one left. Was able to read John 15 in Pidgin while cooking the pancakes, and also have some time for prayer while cooking and eating. Have prayed off and on throughout the morning as my heart is heavily burdened for the work here in Owena. We were encouraged by a visit from Mike and Rex for a good portion of the morning, but so saddened to hear how “N” continues to fight against God and His work. We appreciated the testimonies of these two and were blessed to hear how God is providing for them in spite of no support from their church. After Daddy, Mike, and Rex prayed, Mike and Rex left. Then I started on the day’s work — getting ingredients in a pot for a rice medley for dinner, making the bed, folding part of yesterday’s laundry, finishing yesterday’s journal notes. Then we had dinner, and shortly after that, nap. Nehemiah had not come to see us for a couple days; and we wondered if he were discouraged or what. He did come to SCMS today, and we were thankful to see him. We learned that he had been sleeping and treating a bad headache from the late nights out. He went Saturday to do public preaching in Pinata. Sunday morning he went to preach at Waisara. Then Nehemiah preached Sunday night and Tuesday night at Nueri’s funeral. June 30. 2022 is half gone. Time for the Lord’s return is closer than it was before. The weather remains mostly chilly and dry. Early this morning, MAF came in, bringing Kelly and a box of medicine for a patrol*. Glennys also said that if the airstrip weren’t cut completely from top to bottom and from side to side, they would close the airstrip. Just about dinner time, Apekio brought some kaukau and greens from her garden. She said the new kaukau gardens are ready and people have plenty of kaukau nau. She still hasn’t found any bananas at market. It has been a week or more since we have had any bananas. We really miss bananas. Haven’t had any popo for about a week either. Apekio seemed to want to talk today so we sat and chatted together a half hour or so. Thus we ate dinner about a half hour later than usual, and it was already nap time when we finished eating. (The gardens in Owena are not producing well due to drought. Please pray for a good balance of rain and sunshine. Thanks.) First thing this morning, I finished the e-mail I had started two days ago to C&C. Daddy didn’t have any success in sending it, however. Later I set up a couple weeks’ worth of journal notes as I realized I was getting behind. Put both journal notes and Revelation 20 study on flash drive to transfer to Lewis’s outlook. This evening, besides teaching class, I colored a couple outreach pictures. *Patrol – usually refers to a medical team that goes from village to village treating wounds and sicknesses. This is helpful for those who find it hard to walk long distances to receive medical care. June 27, 2022. A fairly quiet day. Apekio came while I was getting my breakfast ready. She wanted to see what we needed for food and also get some yarn so she can finish the bilum for Lynn’s baby. After she left, I finished breakfast, made the bed, finished quiet time, and finished coloring the outreach picture that I started last night before bed. Then I had a little snack before Daddy and I went out for some sunshine and fresh air. I took the old scissors out and trimmed some dying leaves off the bird of paradise flowers. When we came back inside, I enjoyed a brief Bible study in I Samuel 24 and wrote a bit in my journal. This afternoon, I studied for class. Taught class earlier today as Daddy’s first class was shorter than usual. Also worked on Revelation 20 study. Judy came by this evening — the first time we’ve seen her since she arrived back in the village and since she was gone for the past five weeks or so. She did not say anything about coming back to work, so I didn’t say anything either. She did ask to come tomorrow and practice computer. June 28. The day was chilly, windy, and cloudy. Anna Jean came and washed clothes, and Judy came a little later to practice computer. Anna Jean practiced keyboard after hanging out the clothes and refilling the water buckets. I worked on the study of Revelation 20 and finished that after dinner. It needs a lot of polishing, however, as numerous interruptions caused me often to lose my train of thought. Late morning, SIL flew in (for a look at the airstrip, we suppose) and flew right back out again. We were surprised they even tried to land, the winds were so strong and gusty. Then a little bit later, Mera and his group came along, accompanied by a group of Owenians singsinging and other Owenians just following. All day, we’ve heard speeches and toksaves (announcements) of some kind being broadcast over the loud speaker. They are down at Wanyapeq so we can’t really hear what is being said from up here. This afternoon and evening, I polished up Revelation 20 a bit, studied for culture class, colored several outreach pictures, and started an e-mail to C&C. June 24. So thankful for Anna Jean! Today she washed and hung out clothes, cut up pumpkin, and swept the floors. Then we enjoyed listening to her practice keyboard. In the meantime, I was able to have my breakfast and quiet time, make the bed, and write a couple e-mails — one contained birthday wishes to Joanie, and the other was for C&C and had Revelation 19 study notes attached. After I got those e-mails written, I set them up in outlook in Daddy’s computer. He tried for a while to send them but couldn’t get a connection that would stay. Off and on throughout the rest of the day, I worked on Revelation 20 study notes. A couple times, I took a short stretch out in the sunshine. It was such a lovely day. Everything is very dry, however, and we are praying for rain. For dinner, I made rice patties with the leftover rice. After nap, I studied for class and fixed egg salad for supper. Taught Kristen Famili class, and questions surfaced about aborting babies. Nehemiah was back from Pinata in time for classes. After class, he stayed and talked with Daddy for a while. He is preparing to do outreach in Pinata today and in Waisara tomorrow. June 25. I was thankful for a restful day today. Mid-morning, we enjoyed some time outside in the fresh air and sunshine. Spent my computer time working on Revelation 20 study and making some small changes in the Kristen Famili lessons because there were some questions at the end of lesson 1 that didn’t have answers in the text. Nehemiah came by this afternoon to get his speaker that he had brought in the morning to be charged. He was going to go speak at Pinata, but he learned today that Nueri died last night. He is Andru’s brother and well-known in the community so they expect there will be a lot of people there from Marivo as well as Owena, Waisara, and Pinata. Nehemiah wants to take the opportunity to preach the gospel as there is such a great need. Nueri used to be faithful serving in the church, but went off and played cards (was gambling) and got into other sinful things. His death was very strange, just like Matyu A’s. He came from his garden with stomach pain and kept getting worse so they brought him to the health center. They gave him IV and while they were checking him over, he just died. This evening, I printed the rest of the outreach pictures for the year. Praise the Lord that is done. June 26. Very chilly again this morning, but the Lord sent sunshine, and I was able to sit outside for prayer time and to get warm after getting breakfast, reading a chapter in John, making the bed, and cleaning up the kitchen. Had a little time after that to read and meditate on a chapter in I Samuel, finish coloring a picture I started last night, and color another one. Then it was time to start dinner. Potatoes had to be scrubbed, peeled, and cut up. Ground beef needed herbs and other things added to make a meatloaf. Another few minutes were left to relax before starting things cooking. Once the burners were turned down, I had another fifteen minutes to color before mashing the potatoes. Then we warmed up some pumpkin and ate our veggie before having mashed taters and meatloaf. After nap, it was time to wash hair. The rest of the afternoon and part of the evening, I wrote up a will and testament for Daddy and me so we can have an official seal stamped on it. This evening, we enjoyed a special time of fellowship with Mike and Taqita (little Orpah was with them as well as Michelle’s baby), Pita, Nehemiah, and Anna Jean. Mike led us in a couple songs and then shared his testimony about the work in Minj. Afterward we enjoyed a little food fellowship — just mocha crème cookies and water this time. They ate lots of mocha cremes though. After they left, Nehemiah was to head over to Marivo to preach at Nueri’s funeral. June 22. It was good to have a little break from school today. I didn’t need to hurry through breakfast; but I still ate late as I needed to cut up the big popo that was ripe. Used about three quarters of it to make popo crisp for Daddy and the other quarter for popo syrup for myself. After breakfast and making the bed, I sat out in the sunshine for prayer time. The sun felt good, but there was a cool wind blowing so had to keep my head covered. After coming inside, I read a chapter in I Samuel and then finished organizing the notes for Daddy to take to VBC. Afterward, Daddy and I went out for a short walk over to the airstrip. We didn’t go onto the airstrip because the grass is getting too tall now and there are oodles of grass seeds that would grab onto the clothes. There were a lot of people around as John Boyto was to help settle the Tainaraba-Meqauna dispute today as well as campaign for the election. We don’t really know the exact outcome of the court case as there are about as many stories as there are people that Daddy talked with. After our walk, Daddy proofread the VBC notes and Revelation 19 study. Then I printed out a copy of the VBC notes for him to look over better. Slept a bit longer nap today as we didn’t expect anyone to come for school with all that was going on. This afternoon, I proofread the Revelation study once more and then put it on a flash drive to transfer to Daddy’s computer to send to C&C in an e-mail. Mike came by later and Nehemiah too, and we talked with each for a little while. They said that things were settled peaceably. June 23. Nehemiah didn’t come for phonics class this morning, so I was able to get to the computer early. Read a chapter in I Samuel this morning and worked on the study of Revelation 20 throughout the day. Mid-morning, Daddy and I went for a little walk over to the airstrip. I tried to keep my skirt wrapped tightly around my legs to avoid the seed grass, but I ended up anyway with quite a few seeds stuck to my skirt and socks. After we got back, I cut up a pumpkin and put it on to cook. I sat down to work on the Revelation study and told myself to check on the pumpkin in a few minutes. About 20 or 25 minutes later, Daddy walked by the stove and discovered a burnt pan of pumpkin. My guilty conscience said, “Judy, you should always set the timer when you go away and leave something cooking on the stove.” There weren’t very many dishes to do this evening, but I spent quite a bit of time scrubbing the pan and used up one whole scouring pad. Was able to get quite a bit of the black scrubbed off, but will need to work on it more tomorrow. This evening, just before the end of classes, Nuanda called here to talk to Ana. He is in Lae. June 20. Quite a busy day from rising time until retiring. Fixed eggs for Daddy to go with his pancakes that he warmed up for breakfast. Made a small pot of tea for myself. Drank tea and read chapter 6 in Pidgin John. Made a little more popo syrup and warmed up leftover pancakes. Had started prayer time when Nehemiah came. Daddy was supposed to teach him the discipleship class first; but since I was going to have to make a meal today, I taught him phonics first — a spelling test of 8 words, an hour’s review of the sounds he has learned thus far, and an hour learning the /k/ sound — c before a,o,u, and k before e,i. After Nehemiah had a short stretch break, he and Daddy walked a ways up the airstrip to find out why we didn’t have water. Someone had taken the pipes apart again so Daddy and Nehemiah put them back together. After his class with Daddy, Nehemiah took some rubber pieces up to fasten the two parts of the pipe together more securely. For class with Nehemiah, Daddy started teaching him the discipleship lessons. I got the bed made, finished prayer time, and worked on dinner — getting a pot of rice on to cook and browning onions and chicken and making a gravy to go on the rice. There were leftover carrots to warm up for veggie. After dinner, I looked over the Christian Family lesson that I would be teaching today. Nap was ended early when some children wouldn’t stop knocking on the door. After we were finally up, and they had knocked again, we went to the door. They had a phone to be charged, but because of their actions, we told them to bring the phone back tomorrow. Late in the afternoon, they brought the phone back, but we did not charge it because we had told them tomorrow. This afternoon — evening, I printed two booklets and two short question booklets for Nehemiah, got supper on the table, ate a slice of bread with cheese and tomato/meat sauce, taught the Christian Family class, finished supper, washed dishes, finished filling the washing machine for Anna Jean to wash clothes tomorrow, figured out some sentences to go with Nehemiah’s spelling words for tomorrow, read a portion of I Samuel, wrote in journal. “He that handleth a matter wisely shall find good: and whoso trusteth in the LORD, happy is he.” (Proverbs 16:20) June 21. Praise the Lord for rain last night. The ground is still very dry, however, so more rain is needed. I was thankful that today was not quite so busy as yesterday. Nehemiah came a little after 8:00, After that, I had phonics class with Nehemiah and Daddy had another discipleship class with him. Since I had made a meal yesterday, I didn’t need to make one today so had time to start a Bible study in I Samuel too. Finished that this afternoon after prayer time for SCMS. Late this afternoon, the helicopter came with John Boyto, the former member for Obura-Wonenara, to help settle the matter between Tainaraba and Meqauna. So we expect there will be a big court tomorrow. They will meet here since this is neutral ground. |
