January 17. A busy day for Daddy. Early this morning, John came and helped him carry all the heavy boxes of cargo down to the truck so he could take them over to the hangar. Then he took things over and got them weighed up before doing a lot of other errands around town getting last-minute items. I helped do a little more packing up before he left. Then I sat down to look at the e-mails, and an e-mail came in from Connie which needed to be answered right away so I set to business doing that. In the meantime, Daddy came in for a little bit, and then went back out again. It was 11:30 before I finally finished the e-mail. And it was around 12:15 when Daddy got back. Dinner was all cooked from yesterday so we each warmed up our plateful in the microwave. Then we had nap, after which Daddy went downstairs to take care of our bill here and get a couple other things, before we both went out to take care of more business. This evening, I spent more time on studies in Revelation. January 18. Daddy went out early again this morning to do last-minute shopping, mostly hardware items. While he was gone, I read and wrote e-mails. The second half of the morning we both went out — first to the second-hand stores where Daddy got several shirts, and I got a few things. Then uptown to Papindo for lunch and a few more items. Home for our dessert (ice cream) and then nap, after which we packed up today’s purchases, along with clothes we won’t be wearing again before we get back home, and a few other little items that were purchased before and were waiting to be packed. By then it was almost supper time. Spent a good part of the evening doing more research on art projects and finding some scenery photos for my desktop. January 19. “6For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. 7But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.” (2 Corinthians 4:6-7)

January 15. Washed clothes again this morning. Daddy went out by himself and did a little bit of shopping. I wrote a couple e-mails and worked on Bible lessons for school. At noon, we both went out and went to the Pacific Gardens Hotel for our anniversary dinner. (A late celebration. Their anniversary was December 23rd) Enjoyed a nice meal of chicken and mashed potatoes with gravy plus three veggies — broccoli, carrots, and zucchini. Walked around outside a while, going on part of the trail through the “jungle”, past the cassowary who could have cared less about people, and around to an exit farther down on the road. Most of the afternoon and evening, I worked on Bible studies in Revelation for school. Also tried to do some research on the web, but finally got tired of watching the circles go round and round while the screen stayed blank. “2Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation. 3Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation.” (Isaiah 12:2-3) January 16. Not a lot to do today. Daddy went out early by himself and got a few things. I wrote an e-mail. Later we both went out together and got a few things. After we came back, I started making dinner — rice with chicken (brought home from Pacific Gardens yesterday) and gravy, and a veggie medley — the rest of the broccoli and napa cabbage, a few carrots, and an onion. This afternoon, I worked on studies in Revelation. And this evening, I researched more art ideas.
January 13. It was a busy day shopping, but we praise the Lord for helping us to get a lot done. This evening, we went out to dinner at the Venters’ and enjoyed a good time with them. They have a new baby girl, an abandoned PNG baby, born November 1, that they are working on adopting. Her name is Emma, and she is such a quiet, contented baby. January 14. Daddy took the Constable family to the bus stop around 8:00 this morning; but other than that, we didn’t go out until after mid-morning. Then we only went a few places and bought a few small items before coming back to the house around 12:30 for lunch. This afternoon and evening, I wrote a couple e-mails. This evening I also looked for art ideas for school and made a pink loopy hair scrunchie. January 12. Pancake day. Day to skype the girls again. The Lord’s day—time to listen to an online sermon. More sunshine today. Enjoyed a refreshing stretch outside and meeting up with a missionary from Switzerland with EBC, a back-door neighbor to CRMF. Also wrote several e-mails today; and later this afternoon and this evening, I copied some online English conversation ideas from the internet.
January 10. Lewis got me up at 6:00 this morning. We ate breakfast, had quiet time, finished packing up, got all our cargo out by the door where it would be ready for pick up. Thought we were going to have time to relax a bit as the bus was scheduled to pick us up at 9:00 to take us to the hangar for a 10:00 flight. Brad called, however, to say that he would be early so Daddy had to call the hangar and see if the bus could pick us up earlier. The bus had a hand brake problem so it was in the shop, but they would pick us up in the Hilux. Hosea was thoughtful enough to bring a stool along, otherwise I never would have gotten up into that vehicle. Along the way, we picked up a “young” lady (maybe about 40) named Dawn, who is from Wisconsin and who works at aviation. And also picked up two of the men workers who had taken the bus to the shop. (The two men sat in the back of the pickup, but the back was enclosed.) Off we went over the uneven dirt road, weaving from right to left and back again dodging potholes and deep furrows until we reached the hangar. Got ourselves and our cargo weighed up. Then sat or wandered around and waited for MAF to arrive to take us to Goroka. It was a little after 10:00 when the plane headed down the runway and took off for the skies, flying low because of the clouds. Arrived at Goroka round 10:20, paid for our flight, waited a few minutes for the CRMF van to pick us up, loaded our cargo into the van, climbed in, and Cain transported us to CRMF. It was a joy to see Christie and give her a hug. She got the keys for us and helped us carry our belongings upstairs to the apartment. Bryan went and got the Aibai vehicle and brought it around so we can use it for shopping while we are here. We headed out to Papindo where we had lunch and then did a little shopping. After eating, we met up with Simeon Tuanke, and he walked around with us while we picked up a few items. After that, we made a pit stop at the apartment before doing a little shopping at the new Goroka Family Mart in West Goroka. By the time we were done there, we were both pretty tired so came back to the flat and had a nap. When I got up, Daddy had already gone out again to do a little more shopping. I unpacked my belongings and got everything put away somewhere. Daddy came back shortly, and soon it was supper time—tuna sandwiches—two for me, one with apple, one with cheese. After getting the supper table cleared up, I helped Daddy pour water from the giant jug into some smaller pitchers. Then we got our computers out and set them up. I wrote in my journal, and then Daddy tried to download Comodo for me, but no success. Then we thought he could try e-Sword; but it said it would take three hours, and there weren’t three hours left to our evening. When I came back to my computer, I decided to look into Outlook, and they let me set up our e-mail account in this computer. Praise the Lord! So then I got busy putting a few addresses in the address book. “The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.” (Isaiah 9:2) January 11. A busy day is coming to a close. The morning began around 6:00. There was laundry to do before going out shopping. Praise the Lord for a nice brand new automatic washer here now. That made the washing part quite easy. And hanging things out wasn’t too hard although it involved a lot of stretching exercises in order to reach all parts of the lines in the breezeway. Some time after 8:00, we were getting ready to go out shopping when the neighbors were heading out too. We made introductions with Ron, Iluya, and their daughter, Brielle. But then Ron kept on talking, and Daddy kept on talking too, until I-don’t-know-how-much time went by. My back was hurting from standing there on my feet so long so I suggested they come inside and sit down a while. No, they had to get going. So I excused myself because I was in too much discomfort to be standing so then they decided to come inside. So we chatted a while longer before they took off to run a couple errands. Ron and family are missionaries in Yagusa (AOG), but are getting somewhat discouraged because of lack of interest. Iluya is originally from that area, but lived in the US (PA) for quite a number of years as she was adopted by American missionaries as their first child. It was already 9:30 before we finally went out shopping—Seng Da, Bintangor, and Papindo. Didn’t get back until around 12:30. There was food to put away, and I needed to sit down a few minutes. While I was doing that, Daddy took Ron and family to the bank and then dropped them off at Seng Da. He got back when I was ready to get lunch on the table. We were both quite tired and ready for a nap after that. Then the rest of the afternoon, I was on my feet—washed dishes first; then washed my hair; then started preparing veggies for a tempting beef stew. Peeled the few potatoes we brought from the village, cut them into small pieces, and tossed them into the water in the dutch oven. Peeled a few carrots that Lavender had gotten for us at the SIL market before we left yesterday morning and sliced them small. Cut up half the broccoli we bought yesterday and added it to the pot, and also half the napa cabbage that we bought today. Added three chicken bouillon cubes (there are no beef cubes in town) and started the veggies cooking. Then I cut up a couple onions and browned those in a skillet along with half of the beef mince that we bought yesterday. Salted and peppered it and added it to the stew. It was about 5:30 when supper was done cooking, but it was worth the wait. Tasted so good. “6For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. 7Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.” (Isaiah 9:6-7)
January 8. An all-day cloudy day. As soon as the tech center opened this morning, Daddy went down to buy some internet time so we could skype Christy and Connie. He also asked about printers while he was there. After he came back, he set up his computer and we tried to connect to the internet but couldn’t get a connection. Finally the connection came, and we enjoyed a nice time chatting with the girls, but got disconnected before our hour was up. Well, that’s life in PNG. Then we got ready to go down to the store and get some things for lunch. We went by the tech center first, however, to look at the printers. One of them is only good up to windows 2008, and there is no extra toner available for the other one. So... so much for that. The lady in charge did give us another internet ticket for free, however, since we hadn’t gotten our full hour on the other one. From there we headed to the store. Spent quite a bit of time looking around and bought some things to take back to the village plus some things for me to have for lunches. Came back and fixed lunch and ate. Had a nap. Ate an apple. Set up computer. Wrote in journal. January 9. What a delight to wake up this morning and see the dawn’s early light beginning to brighten up our bedroom! As the morning became brighter, the warm sunbeams began to penetrate the rooms. We ate our breakfast and sat down for quiet time. Then we stepped outside to see what the temperature was like, and it was mild with a soft, gentle breeze blowing so we decided to go for an early morning stroll. How nice to get out into the fresh air where we could get some exercise and enjoy all the beautiful flowers, the singing of the birds, and other elements of God’s handiwork! Just as we were ending our walk and returning to the guest house, we noticed dark clouds building up and the air turning cooler again. By the time we got back, the clouds had nearly filled the sky. We were thankful we had taken advantage of the early morning sunshine. Upon return, I sat in the quiet of the lounge area and prayed for a while. Scanned a book written about the US Constitution and published for the bicentennial celebration of US independence. Then we skyped Martha and were happy for a chitchat with her until our time expired and we were disconnected. Just before lunch, Daddy meandered off to the store to get himself a hamburger for his lunch. I still had tuna and crackers left from yesterday. About mid-afternoon, we both worked our way down to the store where I used my birthday money to buy a couple nice PNG laplaps (a type of cloth) — one for the skirt and one for the meri blouse which perhaps Matthew will make for me. I also got a couple aloe vera drinks and Daddy got a couple tea drinks. Picked up a pack of wet wipes and several more Queen Emma dark chocolate candy bars. A little rain started falling — here a drop and there a drop — just as we were rounding the bend and crossing the road to the guest house. Not long after we were settled inside, the Lord opened the heavens and let the rain pour down This evening, we played a short game of Boggle together.
January 6. Praise the Lord for a better night last night, for myself and for Daddy too. I did have to get up and take some ibuprofen as my neck and back were quite painful from lying down so much. Went to bed early again, and still slept in a bit this morning. We did have to cancel our flight to Aiyura today as I still am not strong enough to manage finishing packing and climbing the hill to the top of the airstrip. I was able to make a few pancakes this morning so Daddy will have something to eat today as his bread is all gone. This afternoon, we tried to finish up most of the packing that still needed to be done. There are a few last-minute things for later. January 7. Daddy’s spiritual birthday. Praise the Lord for His strength today, and that I was feeling a fair bit better though still have a ways to go to get on top of things physically. After a clear, starry night, thick fog came up early in the morning and was slow rising. After that, clouds hung around above the mountains. Praise the Lord that we had plenty of time to get all the last-minute things done, too, before the plane came. And the plane came unannounced so had to wait a while for us to lock up the house and get to the top of the airstrip. Daddy went on ahead to let the pilot know that I would be coming slowly since I had not been well. Amos and Gibson were walking with me just to make sure I would make it okay. About half way up, Neomi came along; and she grabbed hold of my hand and “took care of me” the rest of the way to the top. The plane was full with passengers from Marawaka. Just one seat at the back, which I was given, and a seat up front next to the pilot for Daddy. There were still lots of clouds, and the road was a bit rough. I think the pilot ran into some potholes up there in the sky, as we bounced around quite a bit through one area. 😊 Arrived safely at Aiyura in a short time, and the P2 Bus took us to the guest house. The guest house was bustling with workers who were doing “spring” cleaning after being closed for a month. They had just reopened yesterday. Rebecca was there, and it was good to see her. Lavender was there too. And later Lynette came by for just a few minutes. There is only one other family here besides ourselves — a young Korean couple, Tim and Sue, and their eldest son, Samuel, who have come on a vision trip from Sydney to see about the possibility of working in PNG. We all had lunch together here at the guest house. After lunch, I was good and ready for a nap. Daddy had a short nap and then went down to the store to look around. Brought back our two packages that had come via JAARS. Couldn’t get the other two because the invoice has not been processed yet. We were really hoping for the other two boxes as the computer batteries are in one of them. We were hoping for a little walk in the afternoon, but the rains came and washed away our plan. Sat in the lounge area and relaxed. Did some reading and crossword puzzles. Walked around the floor space a bit when legs needed a stretch. At supper time, the Korean family went out to eat, but Dr. Bud Morton came here to eat at the guest house so he and Daddy got to talk a bit. He is here for a week taking Dr. Tom’s place who is in Australia having emergency surgery for a ruptured tendon.
January 5. Still very weak this morning, but it seemed like the fever had gone down. Could hardly crawl out of bed. Didn’t feel like eating anything. The only thing that tasted good was water. Took more activated charcoal and artemisinin. Slept most of the morning, except for a few minutes when I read my Bible and prayed. At lunch time, I got up and got dressed, and fixed a half cup chicken broth. Could only drink half of it, but at least it was something other than water. Slept until about 3:00 this afternoon. Still felt weak, but not quite as bad. At least I felt like getting up for a while, and even ate a few bites of popo. Daddy had a bad night too. Has gotten a bad cold and was having trouble breathing so didn’t get much sleep. Neither of us went to lotu this morning. Daddy was scheduled to preach and finish the series on music; but, praise the Lord, Matthew was prepared to step in. Amos has a really bad cold too. January 3. The Lord gave us a very foggy morning, but sunshine in the afternoon. After breakfast and quiet time, I started packing for going to town on Monday. MAF called and said their plane was down in Simogu, and they were sending mechanics in to fix it. If they could get it fixed, our flight is still scheduled for Monday. Praise the Lord, they did get it fixed. I also worked on my painting this morning. Had done a little on it Wednesday and a little yesterday, and decided I would just take a break from other things and try to finish the painting today. Around 11:00, we called C&C to let them know that we have not been able to receive/send any e-mails. Sorry to learn that Christy is sick in bed. After talking with Connie a few minutes, we went outside to burn the trash, and then decided to go for a walk. So Daddy locked up the house and we went over to the airstrip and just a short way up. My hips and knees have been quite painful lately, especially at night. I have had to rub with Bio-Freeze in the middle of the night the past few nights. When we got back from our walk, I spent a few more minutes on painting and then warmed up dinner. Painted again after nap until the painting was finished. Praise the for His help and the enjoyment of painting. When that was done, it was time to work in the kitchen and make tortillas for my supper. While I was in the middle of that task and we were getting ready to sit down and eat supper, “T” came to ask about marriage. Is it okay to marry even though she had a relationship with a young man some years ago? It is fine; but now that she is saved, she needs to ask the Lord for a Christian husband. As soon as the generator was on this evening, I pureed the soup that I forgot to puree last night. Then I washed the dishes — lots of them since I used the blender, and emptied the soup out of the big pressure cooker, and made tortillas. Finally time to sit down and relax and write in journal, print out shopping list and a new list of things to take to town. January 4. Written on the 5th. The day started out fairly normal. Seven o’clock lotu started about 7:40. Afterward Sunny washed clothes—three loads—so we wouldn’t have dirty clothes left here to be washed when we get back from town. I helped her hang them out. Then we had a cup of coffee before she swept the floors. The rest of the morning, I did some packing, I think. After dinner, I started feeling sick to my stomach. Don’t remember what I did the rest of the afternoon following nap; but by supper time, I was feeling rather wiped out. There weren’t very many dishes, and I did have enough energy to do those. Then I had Daddy put water on for bath, but before the water got hot, I was feeling very weak and just went right to bed. Chills, then fever, severe headache, sick stomach, very weak. Took some activated charcoal and some artemisinin.
January 1, 2020. The beginning of a new year already. Will this be the year when Jesus comes? Last night, Philemon and Lynn had charge of the game time to see in the New Year. It started at 7:00 and went until a little after midnight. Everyone apparently had a great time. There was lots of laughter and hand clapping. Even though I went to bed around 10:30, sleep was nearly impossible. Consequently, I was tired and wanted to sleep in this morning so slept until the 7:00 bell. Praise the Lord, there was still a good crowd there today even though they were up late last night, and many of the church folks were up early this morning to fix food for all the hungry crowd. It was the last day of the meetings. There were a number of testimonies and special songs. Nuka gave her testimony, as George’s wife had done, sharing about the many troubles she has faced in her life because of marrying an unsaved man. We do pray that many of the young people will take heed to what they have heard. Daddy preached this morning from John 6 on the missions miracle, once again challenging God’s people to give their lives to take the gospel to other places. Amos and family’s desire to go out stands firm, and we praise the Lord for that. Nuanda gave his testimony, showing the picture of himself when he was initiated and telling how, after he got saved, he bought a pair of trousers and a shirt, and he took his initiation clothes and threw them away. We praise the Lord for bringing him out of the time of disobedience and rebellion and back into fellowship with the Lord and many others. He added his challenge to the church to go out everywhere with the gospel, saying that the word preached has spoken to his heart, but he is no longer able to walk the mountain trails. He and the folks of Liberty Baptist Church have already purposed to set aside the toeas (coins) they get for market sales, etc., and put them in an offering just for missions, including the printing of the Scriptures. After the preaching this morning, about 15 young people responded to the call to missions. Benson was among them. Oh, how we pray that someone will come alongside him and seek to encourage him in his decision! And, yes, the other young people as well. Gideon gave his testimony of salvation today. January 2. It was about 11:00 before I went to bed last night, and Daddy said it was 11:15 before he turned the generator off. Instead of preaching, Daddy felt it would be good to turn the time over for testimonies if there were enough people who wanted to give testimonies. Singing went for about an hour, and testimonies went for the next three hours. There were many, many testimonies. Only a few testified that God has called them to go out as missionaries, but quite a few testified that they wanted to use their income and/or talents for support of ministries. There were those who testified as well about how God worked in their hearts in other ways through the meetings. Sadly, there were young people hanging around together outside in the darkness, and some of the church men had to be sent out to handle things. The Lord was so gracious to give us four days without rain, except for during Monday evening’s preaching. Storms were seen coming from different directions, but then seemed to have returned to where they came from before reaching Owena. Last night, it must have rained all night, however, and rained lightly a good part of the morning today. After breakfast and quiet time this morning, I went through the rest of my clothes to see what I could find that fits better and will be suitable for town. Then I got our shopping list made for town and SIL. By then it was going on 11:00, and we needed something for dinner so I headed to the kitchen and got busy washing veggies. Decided soup would be nice to have for a change as we hadn’t had soup for a while. Put lentils in the pot and peeled and cut up kaukau, pumpkin, and onions to add to it. That took a while as both my best knives are dull. Will need to sharpen them after they’re washed. Set the pot on the flame so things could start heating up while I added the seasonings. Once the pressure cooker was locked up, I went and made the bed. Worked on studies in Revelation until soup was done. Had a fairly long nap today. This afternoon, there was more kitchen work to do. Two popos (papayas) to cut up — made a popo crisp for Daddy and put a few pieces away for me to eat plain. Later on, I made some biscuits for Daddy’s supper, prepared some tuna for sandwiches, cut up the last three little tomatoes and a cucumber. Somewhere in between those times, Lewis took the computer up to Matthew’s to try to send the e-mail, but there was no connection. And I did a little more work on the Revelation studies, trying to get quizzes and tests made for the course. After we had eaten and I had done dishes, I went through all the e-mails and wrote down names, e-mail addresses, and notes of their contents so I will know how to answer each one when we get to town. Was hoping to get more e-mails done here, but we have not been able to send any e-mails for days now. Then I took a bath, had a snack, and worked more on Revelation studies. |
