March 26. Got up right at 6:00 this morning so we could finish packing up and be ready to go by 8:00. It didn’t take us nearly as long to get ready as we expected it to so we had a little time to sit and chat a while before leaving. At 8:00, we said our good-byes to Ruth and Tim and were on our way to Havelock. We had enjoyed our stay with them. We expected the trip to Havelock to take about an hour and a half, and it was a little under that when we arrived at Freedom Baptist Church. Went in and got our display set up and visited with the Kohrs and other people who arrived early. How good it was to see Jim and Susan again! and Shannon too! I didn’t recognize her at first. She was just a young girl when I last saw her, and she had straight hair. Now she has very curly hair. She is a lovely young lady with a sweet smile. We enjoyed meeting and talking with a number of others throughout the day -- the adult Sunday school teacher, Ed, and his wife (wish I could remember everyone’s names); and others too. It was interesting how the Lord set the stage for Daddy’s preaching when Ed taught the Sunday school class from the book of Luke on the feeding of the five thousand, with references to the other gospels. Then Daddy preached in the morning service on the Missions Miracle, John 6:1-13. Several people expressed by a show of hands that they were willing to say “Here am I, Lord, send me.” Praise the Lord for the power of His word! The Kohrs took us out to dinner to an Amish restaurant in New Bern. Anthony and the children went along as well as another man whose name we can’t remember. Anthony and Libby were just saved this past July. After dinner, Daddy and I went to the motel (Holiday Inn Express) that had been booked for us) and were refreshed with an afternoon nap. Headed back to the church a little before 6:00 for the 6:30 evening service. The presentation was shown first, and the rest of the time was given to questions and answers. Afterward we went out with the Kohrs to The Big Apple for our evening meal. It was a really nice place, and the workers were very nice. I wasn’t going to get a drink, but just have my water that was in the car, like usual. However, Daddy got a mocha iced coffee, and when I tasted it, I said, “Mmmm, that’s good. I need some of that.” So Bro. Jim brought me a glass and I filled it up. When that was gone, I got another half glass full. Had ordered a beef and lamb gyro which was pretty good, but very filling. Couldn’t eat all of it. We were glad for that time of fellowship together with the Kohrs. Praise the Lord that He has brought them through many difficult times in that ministry and is also beginning to rebuild the church. Truly the Lord has placed them in a genuine ministry of spiritual healing. When we got back to the church to get our car and go to the motel, Daddy and Jim went to get prayer cards and brochures out of our van so Bro. Jim can take them to a pastors’ fellowship on Tuesday. I was standing outside talking with Susan and Shannon, waiting for Daddy to call for me. After a while I was getting cold, so we ladies got back into the Kohrs’ van to wait. Finally the men came over. While we had been waiting for them to get done talking, they had been waiting for us. Oh, well, we certainly enjoyed the fellowship anyway. “4But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, 5Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; 6Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; 7That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.” Titus 3:4-7 Praise God for His kindness, love, mercy, and grace, without which we could not be saved and cleansed from our sins because our works of righteousness are nothing but filthy rags in God’s sight, and without which we could not be justified or have any hope of eternal life. Praise God that the renewing of the Holy Ghost is not just given to us in a small measure, but is shed on us abundantly (copiously, richly), and all through the work of Jesus Christ our Saviour. How I thank the Lord for such a loving Saviour as mine!

March 24. Went to bed somewhat early last night and went to sleep in no time. Didn’t even know when Daddy turned the light out and came to bed. Slept until about 6:30 this morning. Later in the morning, Tim and Ruth took us to Wilmington to the Goodwill Thrift Store. Daddy found several shirts, and I found a lightweight, but warm, spring jacket to replace my old ragged one; a nice light blue sweatshirt-material sweater with an ocean scene on it (to replace my old ragged white one); a long sleeved dressy off-white blouse; and a little gift for someone special. It was after 12:00 when we got back to the house. Had lunch and nap. Fell sound asleep at nap time, and it was going on 3:30 by the time we got up. Around 4:00, we took off for the beach. We bundled up warm with jackets and hats. We enjoyed a wonderful walk along the ocean front, collecting shells and stones, and taking pictures. Relaxed a bit after we came home and then had supper. “11For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, 12Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; 13Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; 14Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.” Titus 2:11-14 Praise the Lord that His grace brought salvation to ALL men, yes to even me. It is Jesus Christ who is my Saviour, who gave Himself to take my place in death that He might redeem me from ALL iniquity, that He might purify me unto Himself to be one of His own people, zealous of good works March 25. Slept in ’til almost 6:30 again this morning, but didn’t go to bed quite as early last night. The Lord gave us a lovely day today. We didn’t go out anywhere this morning, except to go for a short walk to the end of Morgan Lane and back. My legs were hurting a lot this morning. Then Ruthie gave me some of her vitamin D, and I felt a lot better this afternoon. I didn’t realize how much the vitamin D was helping, and I hadn’t brought mine with me. Before lunch, I did some crocheting on the turtle. Took another little stretch outside before lunch and also put a couple things in the car to start getting ready for our trip up to Havelock tomorrow. After nap, I finished the turtle and took the bag of crochet stuff out to the car. Got out my other crochet project and put it near the front as the baby layette is pretty much done. Will have to put a button on the other bootie when we get home, and still need to decide if I will put a drawstring in the hood of the jacket. Around 4:30 this afternoon, we left here for Surf City where Kerri and family are spending a week of vacation at the beach. It was good to see Kerri again, and meet her husband Rob Melson and their two kids Brody and Ryan, and see Devin and Hailey who were very small the last time we saw them. Before supper, Brody and Ryan put a couple kids’ puzzles together that they found in the cupboard there. Rob and Tim went out to get pizza for our supper. After supper, Tim, Daddy, and I put together a 300 piece puzzle of all kinds of candies. Brody (only 6) was quite a whiz even at helping with that big puzzle. Then his mom gave him a Lego model to put together and he found that more interesting. We left there a little before 8:00 and came back to Tim and Ruth’s so Daddy could do more studying before tomorrow. “1Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work, 2To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men.” Titus 3:1,2 In these verses, the apostle Paul gives more guidelines for godly living, including submission and obedience to rulers and those in authority over us, always being ready for every good work, not speaking evil of or defaming others, not being a brawler (making a lot of noise, quarreling). Instead I need to be gentle and show all meekness unto ALL men. March 22. It was a very busy, tiring, and somewhat frustrating day. There was packing to do for our trip tomorrow, food to prepare, texts to send, letters and e-mails to write, a small load of clothes to wash and hang out, dishes to wash before church tonight…. And not everything went just right so I needed extra grace and a loving husband’s arms to give extra comfort. This evening, Pastor Ogle preached on Exodus 14, “There are times when we must stand still and times when we must move forward, both of these by faith.” God often puts us in specific places and has reasons for putting us in places that seem impossible. Israel went through the Red Sea by faith, Egypt by foolishness. Faith is based on the word of God, foolishness on the word of man. “But hath in due times manifested his word through preaching, which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour….” Titus 1:3 God chose to manifest His word through preaching. March 23. Had a hard time getting to sleep last night, and sleep was restless when I finally did get to sleep. I began to put two and two together -- hard to get to sleep, restless sleep, “fire pains” and leg jerks, headaches, fatigue -- and knew it was time to start on the parasite treatment again so did that first thing this morning. There were just a few things to do this morning to finish getting ready for a trip, and then Daddy fell, missing a step as he was going out the back door to take things to the car. Skinned his knee pretty good so had to take time to clean and patch that up. It was only a few minutes after 8:30 when we were packed up and ready to go, so we were just about on schedule. Post office would open at 8:30, and we had to stop there to mail an information packet to a church. From there we headed to Flying J in Blacksburg to get gas. Then headed east for the coast. Made one pit stop after turning onto 74 from I485 around Charlotte. Our next stop was for lunch at Golden Corral in Laurinton. Another pit stop later just outside of Wilmington. Made a wrong turn and went five miles the wrong direction. Finally got on the right road and arrived at Ruth and Tim’s around 4:00. Helped pass the time in the car by crocheting and taking about a half hour nap. Finished the other bootie (hooray!) except for the button which I didn’t bring with me. Then started on a turtle. For supper Ruthie fixed peas and spaghetti with meatball sauce. Then Ruthie and I did the dishes, and Lew and Tim went off to the store to get some coffee creamer. “7In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, 8Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.” Titus 2:7,8 Strong challenge for GIBC and especially for the pastors. It is so important for them to show themselves an example, or resemblance, or print (pattern) of the things mentioned: good works; uncorruptness (that is, purity) in doctrine; gravity (honesty); sincerity (genuineness; freedom from hyprocisy); sound speech that cannot be condemned. If they are faithful to show that kind of example, those who are antagonistic to them will be ashamed because they won’t have anything evil to say about them. March 20. It was about 1:00 before I finally got to sleep last night, and the rest of the night was restless sleep. Praise the Lord for His strength today. This morning, we left a little after 9:00 for Chatlotte. It was chiropractor day for Connie. Her appointment wasn’t until 11:00, but we went to Trader Joe’s first. Even though we were a few minutes late to Dr. Schulman’s office, we still had to wait a while because he was quite busy. When we left there, we went to Neighborhood WalMart and got some bottled water -- some for C&C and some to take on our trip Thursday. It was about 12:30 when we arrived back home. Got groceries in and put away. Then Daddy went out to Subway to get his lunch, and I finished up my soup. This afternoon, I printed out two copies of the script for the presentation (one for Daddy and one for me), proofread and made a few corrections, and added notes on mine for coordinating with the slide show. “7I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: 8Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.” II Timothy 4:7,8 Lord, that I might fight a good fight, that I might finish my course, and that I might keep the faith. Then I may say that I love Thy appearing and I can have confidence, like apostle Paul, that a crown of righteousness is laid up for me. I thank Thee that Thou art the righteous judge. March 21. It was already 50º when we got up this morning. And it got up to 85º here today. Plus the humidity was high so it was very warm. It still feels quite warm this evening. Started the wash early this morning since the weather was warmer. Sewed button on left baby bootie I had finished last night. Now I need to make the right bootie and hope it comes out the same size as the left one. Worked on Sunday school lessons. Then Daddy and I went out to Crossroads Thrift Store, taking some items for donation and talking with Kyle about when he could come over for a meal. When we got back, I started making Sweet Potato/Carrot/Apple/Onion/Red Lentil soup (except I don’t have red lentils so used green). Also made pizza for Daddy and used up the leftover spaghetti sauce. I had some leftover butternut squash soup which I finished up for lunch since my fresh soup was taking a long time to prepare. When the Sweet Potato soup was done cooking, we had our nap. This afternoon, we went down to the thrift store on West Dixon only to find that it was closed on Monday and Tuesday. Came back and pureed the soup I had made at noon. Drank a couple cupsful for supper - delicious! Wrote an e-mail to Beth. Got last week’s journal notes ready and sent them to Connie. Took another little nap again this evening before doing dishes. “ In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began…. Titus 1:2 God CANNOT lie. Before the world began, He promised eternal life. He keeps every promise. Thank you, Lord, for the surety of eternal life. March 19. Cold north wind most of the day, but enjoyed pleasant weather later this afternoon. Mrs. Surrett started teaching on Proverbs this morning with an introduction to this Book of Wisdom. Because Solomon humbled himself as a servant and a little child, God was able to exalt him and use him as a king and as a writer of the proverbs. There were several visitors in our class and quite a few in church. Kristen Champlin’s parents were there, and I enjoy so much the sweet fellowship with her mom in talking about the Lord. Pastor Ogle preached from Matthew chapter 8 on Miracles. “We must by faith believe that Jesus can do anything within His will.” This evening, he spoke on Biblical principles regarding entertainment. 1. Does it bring glory to God? I Corinthians 10:31 2. What does it cause you to think on? Philippians 4:8 3. What does it cause you to look on? Job 31:1; Psalm 101:3 4. Do you delight in violence? Psalm 11:5 5. Do you buy up the time? Ephesians 5:16 6. Are you simple concerning evil? Romans 16:19 7. Do you avoid appearance of evil? I Thessalonians 5:22 8. Do you delight in that which is opposed to God? Romans 3:12ff; 1:19-32 9. Are you distinct, set apart from the world? Ephesians 5:20 10. Do you let it control you? II Corinthians 6:12 11. Does it cause you to be discontent? I Timothy 6:8; Hebrews 13:5 Didn’t get home until late this evening, as we chatted quite a while with Mrs. Bissel. After getting home, I had a bite to eat, finished putting the animations in the presentation, and did the dishes. “But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.” II Timothy 4:5 Good advice for any servant of the Lord: watch in all things (that is, keep sober, be discreet, be discerning, be wise in avoiding errors or evil, be wise in selecting the best means to accomplish a purpose, be circumspect, wary; don’t be hasty in council or action; take due deliberation, reflection, and caution so as not to encounter unnecessary hazard). Endure afflictions. March 17. A very cold morning again, but the day warmed up nicely and was very pleasant this afternoon. Waited until mid-morning to wash clothes so it would be at least in the mid-forties by the time we hung them out. After breakfast and quiet time, I cleaned the living room -- straightened up the coffee table, picked up some things off the floor, put some things away in our bedrooms, rearranged a couple small pieces of furniture, swept the rug, and dust mopped the floor. I appreciated Daddy’s work in sweeping and spot-treating the kitchen floor and taking out the trash. While clothes were washing, I folded Tuesday’s laundry and made the bed. Proofread a document for Connie. Most of the rest of the day, I worked on the presentation. Am thankful to have gotten that better organized and all the pictures in. Now need to work on animations and transition and also record the script. Ruthie called this evening, and I enjoyed chatting with her for a while. “But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.” I Timothy 6:11 Here are the things that the man of God should pursue. March 18. The Lord gave us a lovely day, and it was so refreshing to be able to turn off heat and open windows. It was a busy day too. Don’t know if I even remember everything I did today. Got up a little bit later than planned. Showered and washed hair. Had morning drinks and quiet time. Fixed amaranth for breakfast, and enjoyed that with tuna and almonds. Made the bed. Made jpg copies of newsletter pages and sent those to Christy. Deleted a bunch of e-mails and wrote a couple. Made molasses spice cookies with dates. Revised the house plans that Sara is working on for us and sent her the revised copy. Got a card and gift ready. Folded and put away clothes that were washed yesterday. Cleaned some things off the dining room table and organized the rest of the stuff (with Daddy’s help as he uses the table for his study desk). “1I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; 2Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.” II Timothy 4:1,2 March 15. Very cold today. Low 20’s this morning and only up to low 40’s during the day. I put lots of layers on but still had a hard time getting warm. Wore my slippers most of the day to keep my feet warm. Today’s projects included sewing a hem on the Americana tablecloth and clearing off the kitchen table so I could put that tablecloth on it and throw away the plastic winter table cover that was getting holes in it; working on the presentation; making onion/mushroom soup; photo copying, printing, and getting packets together to send to pastors whom Daddy contacted and who will consider having us come for meetings; doing the dishes; making a shopping list. Christy and Connie went in Christy’s car to church this evening so they could pick up Cindie and also pick up something at a friend’s house. Daddy and I left later, but got there plenty early enough to fellowship with several people before the meeting. After the meeting, we talked with the Workmans about our house plans for PNG. Sara has been doing some research about the types of wood used in PNG and the types of mold that grow out there so she can give us some suggestions. What a blessing that will be! “ And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.” II Timothy 2:2 How we desire to see the leaders of GIBC following this advice in their ministry. March 16. Up a few minutes after 6:00 today. We had a busy morning ahead -- shopping and errand day. Had quiet time and breakfast and started getting ready to go out -- get purse out, print coupons for Hobby Lobby, get snack and drink to take, address letters to take and mail, get shopping list, don’t forget check to cash, also items for thrift store, oh, yes, ice packs and cooler too. Did we forget anything? Hope not. Bundle up warm - it’s wintry out there. It was nearly 9:00 by the time we pulled out of the driveway. First stop, Aldi. From there to Office Max to get ink for Christy’s printer so she can finish printing our newsletters. Hobby Lobby next to get buttons for the baby jacket. Big Lots for jam, and a few other things we found that weren’t on the list. Last stop WalMart. Shopping went quickly, and we would soon be home, so we thought. Stand in checkout line and wait for someone to get a price check. Then another customer needed a price check. More waiting. I finally went and sat down. And Daddy finally went to another checkout. 12:00 now. Decided not to stop at thrift store today. Stopped at bank to cash check and then at post office to mail letters and get stamps. Glad to get home and have lunch. Wound down a bit working on the presentation. Then had nap. Worked more on presentation (with supper in between) until Microsoft Word (which has my script) froze up. Computer fan started over-heating too. Shut down computer. Connie cleaned out fan and rest of computer. I did dishes. Had little snack and then our family time. So that was our day. Praise the Lord for His help through the frustrations, His strength, and encouragement through His Word. “Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.” II Timothy 2:3 We would like to see them learn to endure hardness too. So many of them tend to let the hard places turn them back from following the Lord. March 13. Wow! A busy day! Praise the Lord for His strength and encouragement. It was 6:30 before we woke up this morning so we got a late start. After quiet time, I cooked some fish and had breakfast. Then Daddy and I talked over plans for returning to PNG and things that we need to accomplish. Got journal notes ready to send off to Connie. Then I tried to transfer pictures from the Lumix (camera) to the PC again. How frustrating was that? I thought I figured out last time how it worked, but…. And the manual doesn’t give any instructions for that operation, only for using the camera. Finally got those few pictures transferred and fixed, and then sent the journal notes off to Connie as well as about a dozen files of pictures (from Dad's trip to PNG in January). Cooked up some chicken so I could use it to make supper this evening. This afternoon, I sent out a few newsletters to the rest of our supporters. Then I worked on the presentation until time to get Daddy’s supper. Prepared lima beans, and mashed potatoes with chicken gravy for him. Worked a bit more on the presentation while I had my supper of soup and then did the dishes. Quite a mountain of them since both Connie and I both did cooking today. “7For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. 8Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord….” II Timothy 1:7,8a Because God has given me a spirit of power, of love, and of sound mind, and not of fear, I need not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord. March 14. A chilly day today, but the sun felt pleasant when we hung the clothes out. Most of my computer time today was spent working on the presentation. Worked on that until my eyes and brain got tired. Then took a break and did some jobs around the house. “Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.” II Timothy 2:1 Good advice for our sons in the faith in Owena, and particularly those who are servants of the church. March 12. Woke up this morning to winter. A gentle white snow was fluttering down from the clouds, sticking to the trees, but melting quickly off the ground. It was still coming down when we left for church, but the roads were clear. I wished I had brought my camera because I was dying to get some pictures. Took a couple pictures from the car with Connie’s camera, but it was hard to get good ones from the car. Connie went out in back of the church after we got there and took a few photos. Mrs. Bru taught ladies’ Sunday school class this morning. Her theme was flowers relating to the tongue or our speech, for examples, the snapdragon to represent snapping at others, bachelor button to remind us to keep our lips buttoned, elephant ears to represent listening to gossip, sweet William to represent a sweet disposition, etc. By the time Sunday school was over, the sun was shining, and the snow looked even more beautiful. Pastor Ogle preached a missions message, The White Fields, from John 4. “We must look on the world the way Jesus does.” “When we do what God has asked us to do the fruit will come! Are you faithful to do what He asked you to do?” On the way home from church, we went by way of Blacksburg to get gas. The snow was melting fast, and by the time we got back to Shelby, you would never know it had even snowed. This evening, we had another missionary message. Daddy was given time to tell about his trip and then preach. He shared about the trip first, and then we sang a chorus and Jim Bishop sang a special. Then Daddy preached the missions message from John 6. He had changed the message a bit, and it was obvious the Lord was speaking to hearts. The room was very quiet, and the atmosphere very somber. He challenged people to consider the hard to reach areas of the world. He ended by letting people know that the Lord is directing our way back to PNG. As we traveled home this evening, we could see behind us the moon. It looked like a beautiful harvest moon in the eastern sky. Reminds us again that there is a harvest waiting to be reaped, but the laborers are few. It was about 8:15 when we got home. Had a bite to eat and then did dishes. March 11. I was so tired last night that I went right to sleep and didn’t wake up until after 3:30. Then back to sleep until 6:15. Up for a shower, Bible reading, breakfast, and getting everything together for our day out. Left here just about 8:30 as planned. Arrived at Roger’s (a friend) house just about 9:30 as planned, after making a pit stop. From there we headed to Waxhaw, arriving at JAARS around 10:30. We went to the alphabet museum first. One thing that was really interesting was the story of the Korean alphabet. The king of Korea studied how and where the sounds were made in the mouth and formed the letters according to the shape of that part of the mouth. He wanted to make an alphabet that the common people could easily relate to and learn how to read. They people caught on very quickly and more and more people learned to read. The king never made any written records of his work because he was afraid the higher ups in the country would assassinate him, but he had his seamstresses sew “designs” (all the symbols) into the inside of his clothing and shoes. The seamstresses had no idea what those “designs” were, but thought it was strange that he wanted them sewn into his garments. After the museum, we drove down to the lake. Daddy and Roger went over to the tents to look at solar panels, batteries, and inverters. Daddy also bought a hamburger for his lunch. The Jaars’ teens were selling hot dogs and hamburgers. C & C and I sat in the car and ate the lunch we brought with us. Last stop was the hangar for the demonstration of the helio courier and of the helicopter slinging something underneath. I didn’t get out of the car as my legs were hurting too much. After that, we took Roger back home and then came home. Arrived home sometime around 4:30, and lay down for nap around 4:45. Didn’t get up until 6:15. I think I could have slept all night if it weren’t for getting hungry. When we were just about home, we noticed that the roof of the pretty blue house on the street around the corner, had been burnt out by fire. The third fire on this block in the past three months. So sad for these people to lose their homes. Please pray for these people that lost their home. It was a pretty house, and they had just spent some money putting in a new driveway and fixing the house up to look nice. Now it is of no use any more. They were able to salvage some items. This evening, I finished a hat I was making to go with Connie’s vest that she made for herself. “12Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity. 13Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine. 14Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery. 15Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all. 16Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.” I Timothy 4:12-16 Great words of exhortation for the Owena pastors and other young pastors, and profitable for anyone else too. |
