September 23. Went out this a.m. to the west stores. Were thankful to find some nice plump filleted and skinned chicken breast at Food Link. Also found a big kilo bag of grated parmesan cheese. That should last us for some time to come. We’ll divide it up and put a small part in the fridge at a time and keep the rest in the freezer. Since we were having a hard time finding whole chickens, we also got some of the chicken breasts for the school closing to take the place of the whole chickens that Anna Jean and Ana ordered. Steve called while we were shopping at west. He and Uriah were on the bus on their way into town. It was an hour later before they called again and said they had finally gotten to town. They are staying with a pastor down near where the fighting was in North Goroka; and along the road, they ran into a related fight so the traffic, including the bus they were on, had to wait until the fight was quelled. They went around shopping with us; and when we went back to the house, and then headed back to where they’re staying. We had our dinner — meat pies — and then a nap. Daddy’s nap was interrupted by a couple phone calls. He got up and went out to do a little more shopping while I was still sleeping, and got back just a bit after I got up. He only went to Seng Da. September 24. The morning began around 6:00. There was laundry to wash and hang out, breakfast to eat, the bed to make, quiet time to listen to the Lord’s voice, and time to talk with Martha via skype. Then Daddy and I went out to do a little shopping. Mostly we were looking for decorations for the school closing and something to help Anna Jean with her hair damage. We finally found some pretty garlands (Christmas décor is out already) at Seng Da and some hair oil at a no-name store. We also got some yarn at Seng Da. Mike called while we were out and said he was on his way to Goroka. It was about noon when we got back to the house so we had our lunch. Then we had a nap. After nap, Mike called to say he had arrived so Daddy went to pick him up. Lawrence was with him. They went to see if they could find Open Door Baptist Church; and with a little guidance from people along the way, they finally found it. They couldn’t get all the way to it, however, because the road was badly broken up. After they arrived here, they talked about it and decided to try Cornerstone Baptist Church tomorrow instead. I had lots of kitchen work to do. First of all, the dishes needed to be washed. Then dinner needed to be made — cut up chicken, onion and garlic and browned all that in a large saucepan. Then peeled and cut up two large potatoes which I added to the pot after adding water. Saw that the pot was not going to be big enough so transferred everything to a Dutch oven. Next I cut up a small tray of broccoli which we had bought, and then peeled and cut up three large carrots. Added chicken bouillon, salt, pepper, and oregano (didn’t bring much with us for herbs and spices), and more water. Set it all on to cook and sat down to relax a bit while we were waiting. In the meantime, Mike and Lawrence had left to go wherever they would be sleeping. Enjoyed our stew, cleaned up the kitchen, and relaxed for the evening. September 25. Early this morning, we enjoyed time with our daughters via Skype. How nice it would be to give them a real hug, but praise the Lord for Skype. After our time with them, I started making some pancakes for my breakfast. Also started quiet time, and spent time praying throughout the day. Mike and Lawrence came a little before 9:00 to go to church with Daddy, but Daddy had decided to wait and go later for just one meeting since there are no facilities there, and he was concerned about getting too cold from the fans and wind passing through. When they arrived there around 10:00, the church was still having Sunday school. When Sunday school was over, Daddy went inside. He sat at the back on a very hard bamboo bench to avoid sitting under the fans in the middle of the meeting house. A man who is a relative of Lynn Graham came and sat down beside him and talked with him. Lawrence went to the children’s church. Daddy said there must have been about 200 people there, many of them sitting in the center aisle. The pastor was in Moresby at the pastor’s conference so another man was doing the preaching. Daddy stayed for about an hour and then came back to the flat, but Mike and Lawrence stayed on. When Daddy got back, we had dinner — some of the chicken stew I had made yesterday, but I put dumplin’s on it today. Mike and Lawrence arrived back here at the flat around 3:00, after our nap. They said they walked slowly, but we figured they must have been giving us time to have a nap, which we did. We gave them each a bowl of chicken ‘n’ dumplin’s and we fellowshipped a while before they went back to where they were staying. In the evening, we tried listening to EBC’s first missions conference meeting on livestream, but the reception was rather hit and miss. Dr. Baker’s message was a blessing and just what we have been trying to get across to the churches in Owena. Throughout the day, I worked on crocheting, and finished another wee bilum (string bag) to put candy in for the children who come to the school closing. Had finished one bag yesterday.

September 21 & 22. Did not get to write in my journal on the 21st so I don’t know how much of yesterday’s events I’ll remember. Woke up and arose from the bed a little before 6:00. There was a lot to do before the plane came. At least it wasn’t scheduled to come until mid-afternoon so I had time for my Pidgin Bible reading and for prayer. Also made the bed. Just about the whole rest of the morning was spent doing last-minute packing, weighing up the cargo, cleaning up the kitchen, putting away valuables (that is, printers, and extra computer that Anna Jean has been practicing on). Daddy talked to people at the door. Anna Jean and Zephaniah came around 8:00, I think, and waited around all day until the plane came. We had Anna Jean do a couple heavy jobs for us, plus answer the door. Otherwise she practiced computer. Zephaniah played with the Lego - type toys. We had leftover fish patties and pureed pumpkin for dinner. There was still lots of pumpkin left over so Anna Jean and Zephaniah each had a bowlful. After dinner, I washed up the dishes, and Daddy dried them and put them away. After that, I was so tired, but tried unsuccessfully to rest in the recliner. Finally went and lay down on the bed anyway. The day was overcast, but the mountain tops were clear. We heard planes coming and going most of the day. Early afternoon, SIL came and got a load of coffee for Danny. Finally we heard a sound like MAF’s plane coming to land in Owena. It was about 2:30. About the time we headed up the airstrip, it started raining lightly. We were thankful it didn’t rain hard, and Glennys was able to take off okay. Glennys’s husband, Jonny, was with her on the plane, as was another young man with the Rural Airstrip Authority. They had been going around to various airstrips doing surveys. There were rain clouds all the way to Goroka, but there was still fairly good visibility. We arrived in town a little after 3:00. We learned that things in town are calm right now, although tense. Police and defense force are patrolling the streets. Brian hadn’t brought the Aibai vehicle to the hangar so Wesley took us over to MAFTech. We had no vehicle the rest of the day, so we didn’t get to do any shopping. It was a bit late in the day to shop anyway. I unpacked all my belongings that I had brought to town for the week, and put them away. There is a man staying in Flat 2 who is from Cairns. His name is Nigel Gorry. He works with MAFTech, but goes back and forth to his home in Australia. He said he had met us a number of years ago when he worked with MAF. He said that Nigel is an English name and that recently, when someone hosted a Nigel get-together in England, there were 400 Nigels who showed up. 😊 We had had dinner at noon so had sandwiches for supper. After supper, I turned on my computer. I thought about reading a chapter in II Kings, but was too tired. I thought about writing an e-mail, but I was too tired. I thought about writing in my journal, but I was too tired. I shut my computer back off and got ready for bed. It must have been before 8:00 when I lay my head upon my pillow and was soon sound asleep. Now a new day has come and gone. Didn’t get up until a little after 6:00 this morning. But I did feel rested and was thankful for a long night’s rest. We had to wait for Brian to bring the truck over this morning before we could go out shopping. I had a little time to write an e-mail to Pastor Ogle while we were waiting. It was going on 8:30 before we were able to go out. Headed to Seng Da first, and got quite a few groceries there. From there we went to King Wee and got a good number of items there. After that we headed back to the flat to put groceries up, have a snack, and call Dr. Nellis to make sure he was in his office, My appointment was at noon, but we made a stop first at the post office to check on some unusual package notices that had come through MAF’s mailbox for us. Francis and Joanne noticed that the cards were dated December 2021, and there were no such packages there at the post office, and those particular cards were not the normal ones to use for a notice of over-sized mail. The post office was not very busy so we had a nice little chat with Joanne too. She told us that she goes to Open Door Baptist Church which is somewhere near the hospital. She gave us a business card with the pastor’s name and phone number so we can call and get directions to get there. Next, off to the dentist. As I thought, I have a number of cavities in several of my molars. Dr. Nellis didn’t do any work today, but rescheduled me for Monday at 9:00. Eventually, he will need to do a couple root canals which will take about three hours. For now he will do some fillings and also temporarily fill the ones that need root canals. When we left Dr. Nellis’s office, we went around the corner to a little store where Daddy bought some flex cards, and a phone for Anna Jean. Then we went to Papindo café for lunch (it was after 1:30, and going on 2:00 before they brought us our order), and then shopping in the store. Last of all, we went to Greenland and shopped before coming back to the flat. By then, it was going on 4:00. We put away what needed to go in the fridge, had a snack, and then lay down for a nap. Slept until 5:30, and then we had supper. Washed dishes this evening even though there weren’t very many, and then wrote in my journal. September 19. It was sunny the first part of the morning, but clouds and strong, cool winds came up the second half of the morning. Stayed cloudy most of the day, but no rain. Still praying and trusting the Lord for rain.
Anna Jean came this morning while I was just starting to fix my breakfast. (Daddy had already eaten.) She wanted to give us money for her share of the food for the closing program of SCMS. As it ended up, she was here quite a while — filling up the washing machine for laundry tomorrow and answering the door several times. Wan came early, too, and worked on the clothesline, first of all replacing the poles on the north end as they were all rotten, especially the upright. That took him several hours, and then he put the lines back up, tightening them well because they become slack so quickly. That part didn’t take him long at all. We are certainly thankful for his help, strength, and hard work. After I finally finished breakfast, made the bed, and finished prayer time, Daddy and I went out for a while to enjoy the sunshine. After that, I looked for the Jenesis/Eksodas (Genesis/Exodus) file so I can start proofreading and making corrections. Then I was challenged by a short Bible study in II Kings chapter 19. The rest of the day, I busied myself with packing and also worked on setting up a print file for the Old Testament, and started getting Genesis set up in it and proofreading the text for accuracy and correcting any mistakes. September 20. Damp, chilly, and cloudy this a.m., but no rain yet. Anna Jean came and washed clothes. No sun to dry them, but plenty of wind. We learned on the news this morning, that there has been tribal fighting in Goroka this past weekend. Tourists were waiting for their flight to Moresby on Sunday after being in Goroka for Independence Day celebrations, but all flights were cancelled. Daddy sent a text to Brian this morning to see if it is going to be safe for us to come to town tomorrow. He didn’t really know, but will see if things are calmed down today. MAF was closed yesterday, and is closed again today. I worked a little bit on Genesis today, but mostly worked on packing. Also pureed the pumpkin that we cooked several days ago and made fish patties for our dinner. Daddy sent a text to Glennys this afternoon, and MAF does plan to fly tomorrow, but she will be doing survey flights in the morning so our flight will not be until mid-afternoon. |
