September 23. Went out this a.m. to the west stores. Were thankful to find some nice plump filleted and skinned chicken breast at Food Link. Also found a big kilo bag of grated parmesan cheese. That should last us for some time to come. We’ll divide it up and put a small part in the fridge at a time and keep the rest in the freezer. Since we were having a hard time finding whole chickens, we also got some of the chicken breasts for the school closing to take the place of the whole chickens that Anna Jean and Ana ordered. Steve called while we were shopping at west. He and Uriah were on the bus on their way into town. It was an hour later before they called again and said they had finally gotten to town. They are staying with a pastor down near where the fighting was in North Goroka; and along the road, they ran into a related fight so the traffic, including the bus they were on, had to wait until the fight was quelled. They went around shopping with us; and when we went back to the house, and then headed back to where they’re staying. We had our dinner — meat pies — and then a nap. Daddy’s nap was interrupted by a couple phone calls. He got up and went out to do a little more shopping while I was still sleeping, and got back just a bit after I got up. He only went to Seng Da. September 24. The morning began around 6:00. There was laundry to wash and hang out, breakfast to eat, the bed to make, quiet time to listen to the Lord’s voice, and time to talk with Martha via skype. Then Daddy and I went out to do a little shopping. Mostly we were looking for decorations for the school closing and something to help Anna Jean with her hair damage. We finally found some pretty garlands (Christmas décor is out already) at Seng Da and some hair oil at a no-name store. We also got some yarn at Seng Da. Mike called while we were out and said he was on his way to Goroka. It was about noon when we got back to the house so we had our lunch. Then we had a nap. After nap, Mike called to say he had arrived so Daddy went to pick him up. Lawrence was with him. They went to see if they could find Open Door Baptist Church; and with a little guidance from people along the way, they finally found it. They couldn’t get all the way to it, however, because the road was badly broken up. After they arrived here, they talked about it and decided to try Cornerstone Baptist Church tomorrow instead. I had lots of kitchen work to do. First of all, the dishes needed to be washed. Then dinner needed to be made — cut up chicken, onion and garlic and browned all that in a large saucepan. Then peeled and cut up two large potatoes which I added to the pot after adding water. Saw that the pot was not going to be big enough so transferred everything to a Dutch oven. Next I cut up a small tray of broccoli which we had bought, and then peeled and cut up three large carrots. Added chicken bouillon, salt, pepper, and oregano (didn’t bring much with us for herbs and spices), and more water. Set it all on to cook and sat down to relax a bit while we were waiting. In the meantime, Mike and Lawrence had left to go wherever they would be sleeping. Enjoyed our stew, cleaned up the kitchen, and relaxed for the evening. September 25. Early this morning, we enjoyed time with our daughters via Skype. How nice it would be to give them a real hug, but praise the Lord for Skype. After our time with them, I started making some pancakes for my breakfast. Also started quiet time, and spent time praying throughout the day. Mike and Lawrence came a little before 9:00 to go to church with Daddy, but Daddy had decided to wait and go later for just one meeting since there are no facilities there, and he was concerned about getting too cold from the fans and wind passing through. When they arrived there around 10:00, the church was still having Sunday school. When Sunday school was over, Daddy went inside. He sat at the back on a very hard bamboo bench to avoid sitting under the fans in the middle of the meeting house. A man who is a relative of Lynn Graham came and sat down beside him and talked with him. Lawrence went to the children’s church. Daddy said there must have been about 200 people there, many of them sitting in the center aisle. The pastor was in Moresby at the pastor’s conference so another man was doing the preaching. Daddy stayed for about an hour and then came back to the flat, but Mike and Lawrence stayed on. When Daddy got back, we had dinner — some of the chicken stew I had made yesterday, but I put dumplin’s on it today. Mike and Lawrence arrived back here at the flat around 3:00, after our nap. They said they walked slowly, but we figured they must have been giving us time to have a nap, which we did. We gave them each a bowl of chicken ‘n’ dumplin’s and we fellowshipped a while before they went back to where they were staying. In the evening, we tried listening to EBC’s first missions conference meeting on livestream, but the reception was rather hit and miss. Dr. Baker’s message was a blessing and just what we have been trying to get across to the churches in Owena. Throughout the day, I worked on crocheting, and finished another wee bilum (string bag) to put candy in for the children who come to the school closing. Had finished one bag yesterday.
