November 24. The night was wintry cold. Down to 46º this morning and 53º in the house. Daddy was up a little early to get the fire going, and I was up not long afterward to get breakfast going. After breakfast I took my prayer notebook and went outside in the sunshine for a while to get warmed up. About 8:45, we called Christy and Connie and enjoyed some time with them. The time just goes too quickly. The cold winds came up early and blew on us even in lotu. Daddy preached this morning on giving, the first half of the last chapter in the discipleship booklet. Amos continued teaching from the book Bai Mi Maritim Husat? (Whom Shall I Marry?) There was a very small crowd in lotu today Don’t know where everyone was. (These "books" used in preaching and teaching time are discipleship material that was specifically prepared for the church.) We didn’t get to have a nap until after second lotu. It was some time after 2:30 or maybe going on 3:00 before we lay down. I was thankful for about an hour’s sleep. I have just been so tired this weekend after a long, busy week when Daddy was gone. Hadn’t even had a chance to write Monday’s lesson plans until today, and did that right after nap. Then I wrote in my journal until time to fix supper. This evening was busy with bath, washing dishes, trying to scan a picture that only wanted to scan as a PDF document, printing copies of the picture once I finally figured out that I had to cut all the words off the picture before it would scan as a picture, printing copies of science study notes, printing copies of science quiz, getting the next Bible lesson proofread and starting to get it set up in the students’ file.

November 22. It is 9:00 p.m. already. It has been quite a day. Praise the Lord for lovely weather again and a good day for plane flights. Praise the Lord for His help with school this morning. The plane arrived just about 1:00, when the students were about done with school. I dismissed them to go help Daddy, but they came back and finished up their science lesson anyway. By the time the plane arrived, I was very hungry. Hadn’t had anything to eat since early morning. The only thing I could think of to eat was tuna so mixed up some tuna with mayonnaise, cut a few slices of cucumber, and got out the rye crackers to make “sandwiches.” Before I got a chance to eat anything, however, people came with cargo. Then Daddy came. I did have a chance to eat one tuna cracker sandwich while Daddy was teaching Amos how to change the gas bottle, and then ate another when Daddy sat down for dinner. After he ate his tuna sandwich, I finished up the rest of the tuna because I was still hungry. In between eating tuna crackers, I unloaded the fridge and freezer items from their boxes and loaded up the freezer. It was 3:00 before we finally got settled down for nap. Got up around 3:45 and got right down to business preparing a meal. What a blessing to have the use of the gas stove again! It is hard to cook a meal on the wood stove, especially since the smoke bothers my eyes so much. Please continue to pray that Mom and Dad can get solar power where they are. That will help so much with constant supply of power. Even though it costs a lot to install, it will also help them not to put out so much money each month. Also, there won't be so much constant upkeep on the generator. Thank you so much for praying. For supper, I washed yams, sweet potatoes, and potatoes; peeled them, and cut them up into small pieces. Put all in the Dutch oven and covered with water, ready to cook. Then I husked and cut up the uxai into the large frypan, and washed, peeled and cut up a small pumpkin which I added to the uxai. Started those two things cooking and then got out an onion and a chunk of ground beef and heated up a pan to brown those. While those were browning, I prepared a brown flour mix for gravy to go with the meat. When the root veggies were done cooking, I added, butter, milk, salt and pepper, and mashed up that mixture. Supper was finally ready to eat around 5:30. There was a lot of kitchen cleanup to do after supper, and there were still grocery items to put away. The foot locker needed to be reorganized so all the cereals, crackers, cookies, and other grain items could be stored in it. After putting the groceries away, I put water on to heat for dishes. And while I was washing dishes, we had water on heating for bath. I was very grateful for a bath this evening. After bath, I looked at the Christmas sale catalog from Brian Bell, read some articles on CCM that Daddy had found on the web while he was in town, and then came to the computer to write in my journal. November 23. Today was another dry day, but very chilly. It was a pretty busy day again too, but not quite as much on my feet as yesterday. First after breakfast was lotu. Then Sunny did the laundry and swept the floors, and I started an e-mail to Christy and Connie. Had to quit when the battery went low shortly after the generator was turned off. Most of the rest of the morning, I worked on the science test for unit 2 which the students will probably take some time this coming week, and also worked on the study notes for them to study from. Never did get around to grading their spelling quizzes or writing lesson plans for Monday. After dinner, Daddy and I got the clothes in and then had a nap. And after nap, I cut up a popo, washed my hair, had a snack, finished the science study notes and test, sorted and washed a small bunch of greens, cut up a tomato for supper sandwiches. Then we ate supper, and afterward I cut up the greens and put them on to cook, washed the dishes, looked through the box that had come from C&C, and finished writing the e-mail to C&C. Then Daddy sent the e-mail, and praise the Lord, they went right out. While he was doing that, I reformatted the notes he got from the web on CCM and then printed them out for him. He is preparing to teach the school students and also do more preaching on this subject. The music that is coming into the village now is so bad. Also put the last two income reports in a word file and got those ready to be e-mailed. Nuanda came this evening to talk with Daddy. He has finished checking Matyu, praise the Lord! And Daddy wanted to talk with him about our preparing to start MTP (Missionary Training Program) and also about the coming teaching on music. “If thou faint in the day of adversity, thy strength is small.” Proverbs 24:10
November 20. Gibson had charge of lotu this morning and preached from John 10 on the Great Shepherd knowing His sheep, protecting them and providing their needs, and always holding them in His hand. The new lesson in math was fairly easy and short. We went over the spelling lesson together, and there were many unfamiliar words in the exercises so it took the whole class time. In science they had a quiz. I was glad for an earlier nap today, as I have been getting tired out this week. Didn’t sleep any longer though. When I woke up, it was already time to feed the fire again. Then I tried (unsuccessfully again) to send e-mails, wrote lesson plans, and wrote some math exercises on the chalkboard. Answered the door quite a few times again today. Opo brought more firewood and wanted to know if Daddy is going to be able to get him a razor. Tomas came a couple times about a question on Exodus as he will be speaking to the school students at their closing program tomorrow. Mata’s mother brought uxai (a delicious local vegetable). Wenke’s wife brought a popo. Gibson is having stomach pains and wanted to buy some milk. Nuandauro wanted some Maggi to go with her greens. Can’t remember who else came, if anyone. Amos is holding youth meeting this evening. Chat time with Daddy seemed to go too fast this evening; but, Lord willing, he will be home the day after tomorrow. After talking with Daddy this evening, I worked on the studies in Revelation until bedtime. November 21. The Lord gave us such a beautiful day. Thank you, Lord. Life was in action early around here this morning. Mr. Rooster came to wake me up right at 5:45 as usual. There was a knock on the door even before I was up and dressed so that person had to wait. About every five minutes after that, someone was at the door for something or other. I finally had time to fix my breakfast a little after 7:00. Except for the four school students being here until 1:00, this part of the village has been deserted all day. The eighth-grade graduation program has been going on down at the school grounds. I’m guessing that my four students went down there after class too. Praise the Lord for giving an e-mail connection today. It was enough to bring five e-mails in, but did not send any out. So the quarterly newsletter has still not gone to Christy for printing and mailing. Tried to get an e-mail connection again this evening, but could not. “17Bow down thine ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply thine heart unto my knowledge. 18For it is a pleasant thing if thou keep them within thee; they shall withal be fitted in thy lips. 19That thy trust may be in the LORD, I have made known to thee this day, even to thee. 20Have not I written to thee excellent things in counsels and knowledge, 21That I might make thee know the certainty of the words of truth; that thou mightest answer the words of truth to them that send unto thee?” Proverbs 22:17-21
November 18. The Lord gave us a pleasant dry season type morning and up through mid-afternoon. Then He sent us rain for the rest of the day and evening. Tried to send an e-mail to Christy with the newsletter pages, but the computer battery had not been charged since it was last used so didn’t have enough time left to give it a good try. Had a connection for a while, and eight e-mails came in but none went out. I didn’t start a fire this morning and just had a bowlful of fresh fruit (popo and bananas) with pecan pieces for breakfast. At recess time, Dallas started a fire for me so I would be able to warm up dinner later. By then I was hungry, however, so I warmed up the rest of my cooked popo, heated up two pancakes, and enjoyed those with almond butter and fruit on top. The wood box was just about empty by the time school was out, and the two men stayed and chopped firewood. I am certainly grateful for their help. They had to put an old saw blade back on the saw because the newer one would hardly do the job anymore. I enjoyed some greens and some rice with tuna for dinner and then brought things up to pressure in the pressure cooker. For my computer time this afternoon, I finished a small section in the Revelation studies, printed out the next seven ladies’ meeting lessons that I had prepared, and scanned a couple maps to use in the Revelation notes. Had bath before supper while the house was still somewhat warm from when the fire was going. Washed up the few dishes after that. Then worked on Revelation until Daddy called. Put the computer on the charger while we were talking. Always delighted to hear his voice and talk with him a while. It gets lonely without him. Then I had a snack and suddenly remembered that I needed to print out the new Bible lesson to start on after the students have their quiz in the morning. So got right down to business on that. November 19. The Lord gave us a lovely morning and nice early afternoon again, and brought clouds and a little rain later in the afternoon and rain again late evening.. Besides school and tending to the wood stove after Dallas made the fire, I kept busy today answering the door. Nuandauro came with kaukau, Kaipo with lemons, Yanahdo to get some oil and Maggi, Mata with bananas, Elise with yams, and Opo with firewood. Also did a small load of wash by hand this morning. The best part of the day was from 7:00 to 7:30 p.m. when I got to talk with Daddy. The rest of the evening, I worked on English lessons to use after the current spelling lesson. Have not been able to get a connection to send out any e-mails.
November 10. A chilly, rainy day again. The morning was busy as I needed to make something for dinner. And since we are nearly out of gas for the stove, I needed to make a dinner that will last for several days. So after making pancakes for breakfast, and extras for Daddy’s snacks during the week, I cut up onions, pumpkin, and sweet potatoes, and added other ingredients for a nice pot of vegetable soup. It was already 10:00 before I got that on to cook, but lotu didn’t start until nearly 10:30. Daddy preached this morning on Witnessing; and Amos preached this afternoon, starting to teach through the booklet on marriage. This afternoon, I worked on ladies’ meeting lessons and finished a couple of those. Should have several ready soon to give to Mata. Had a “bath” right away after supper as the air was already getting chilly. Then I did the dishes and afterward wrote a couple e-mails. Then I finished up another ladies’ meeting lesson.
November 8. Another fire-all-day day — chilly and rainy. No sunshine. A stay-at-home and stay-inside day. Much of the day was spent at the computer — getting English lessons ready to print and also a song. This afternoon, I also made lemon ginger cookies and proofread more of Matyu (translation of the book of Matthew). This evening, after getting the kitchen cleaned up and doing dishes, I printed the song and the English lessons. Then I started writing lessons for next year’s course in Revelation. “35For whoso findeth me [wisdom] findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the LORD. 36But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death.” Proverbs 8:35-36 November 9. The Lord gave us such a nice day and is giving us rain this evening. Lotu started early and everyone left early. Sunny was here this morning and did the laundry for us. Everything was already dry just before noon when we brought it in. We actually had gone out to get some fresh air and sunshine so didn’t bring things in right away. I picked a few flowers and leaves for the students to identify on Monday as monocots or dicots. Part of the time while Sunny was working, I spent in praying, and part of the time in working on the last Bible lesson for the year. I thought it would be a short lesson as there were only a few verses left to cover in John chapter 9; but there was a lot in those few verses, and the whole story had some excellent teaching on how to share the gospel with others. So, I didn’t finish the lesson until early this evening. Afterward I practiced keyboard for a while and then printed out a new prayer notebook.
November 6. Praise the Lord for a drier day after a little rain early this morning! Only a dozen or so in lotu this morning. After lotu, Mike, Phinehas, and Graham cut firewood. We had used up quite a bit yesterday with the fire going all day. After talking with Mata and Bonita a bit, I did the laundry. I enjoyed getting outside and hanging up the clothes. Talked to Mata about the ladies’ soccer game that took place in Pinata yesterday. Many of the young ladies from Owena were involved in the game which included playing for money and not being allowed to wear skirts. Some of the young ladies wore sports outfits, and they mentioned one of our youth that wore short shorts and a singlet (tank top). Bonita’s name had been written down to play, but she refused to play as did her sisters. After seeing what was going on, Mata and the three girls came back home. It is sad, but there seems to be little understanding among the youth regarding the nature of sin, awfulness of sin, and the holiness of God. We wonder how many really understand that they are sinners or why they need a Savior. Even though many of them have made a profession of salvation, there doesn’t seem to be much change in their lives or a desire to live for Christ. We feel that there is a need to teach the Creation to Christ lessons among this younger generation. Later in the morning, Daddy and I sat and discussed that for a while. For dinner today, I made potato patties, this time with the leftover potatoes/pumpkin. Added onion and seasonings, and we really couldn’t tell much difference in taste between those and the non-potato patties. 😊 This afternoon, I spent more time working on lessons in John. This evening, I wrote lesson plans for this coming Monday, printed out Proverbs lessons for Amos to use in youth meetings, and finished a lesson in John. November 7. Foggy and rainy early this morning, but the Lord gave us some sunshine a little later. It was a super-busy morning, on my feet most of the time, except for eating breakfast and having quiet time. Washed a couple popos to cut up in the afternoon — one for eating raw, and one for making popo crisp. They both needed to be cut as they were quite ripe. Made a big jug of iced tea (a gallon or so in a five litre jug) - senna leaf, nettle leaf, alfalfa leaf, organic white tea, organic jasmine green tea, reishi tea, cinnamon sticks, and ginger. Put eggs on the wood stove to boil so I can make egg salad for our supper sandwiches. Wrote math review exercises on the chalkboard in preparation for back to school on Monday. Then Daddy and I went outside to get fresh air, sunshine, and exercise. Until somebody makes a new bridge across the newly dug-out ditch by the side of the airstrip, I have no way to get across from the trail to the airstrip anymore. So walking up the airstrip and back is not an option for exercise right now. But at least there has been work to do outside. Today we moved the rest of the firewood so the yard looks a lot neater. I also cut off the long gangly stalks of the tangets (a type of plant) because, in my opinion, they don’t look nice sticking up in the air — a few leaves on a long stem. After we came inside, I got rice on to boil for our dinner. Then I was in need of a sit-down break until dinner time so wrote in my journal. This afternoon was spent mostly at the computer, laying out study questions for the current science unit and making up a science quiz for the next section of the unit. I also cut up the two large popos I had washed this morning, filling a large storage container to put in the fridge and filling a skillet with pieces to dice up and cook with sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, and an oatmeal topping. This evening, I printed out the Bible lesson for next week. Then David came to visit for a while. Then I did the dishes and afterward made up the quiz for the lesson in John that I finished last night and then proofread it. “For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.” Proverbs 8:11 November 4. Overcast most of the day with light rains this afternoon and evening. This morning, after breakfast and quiet time, I worked on the next lesson in John for a while. Daddy and I were going to work on getting the rest of the plywood up in our bedroom, but we only have one drum to stand on, and we need one for each of us so will have to borrow another one. There isn’t much left to put up, but everybody else is busy working on their own projects. So we set that project aside for now, and we went outside to do some yard cleanup. People keep throwing firewood over the back fence, and leaving it in piles there. It makes the yard look messy so between the two of us, we were able to carry two bundles of firewood over to the house and put it under the house. We also picked up some bark that we had pulled off the clothesline post, and Daddy put that under the house. There is just a little bit left to do, but that was enough strenuous work for us for this morning. After we came back in, I worked a bit more on lessons in John. Now I have a funny story to tell. For our dinner, I made potato patties with the little bit of mashed potatoes that were left over, or so I thought. After getting the container of leftover mashed potatoes out of the fridge, I chopped up a little onion to add to it. Then got out the flour and the half cup measure, opened the container of leftover potatoes, threw in the flour and onion, added some baking powder, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and parsley, and mixed all together. (The fact that the mixture was a bit orange didn’t matter because I had heated up pumpkin and mashed potatoes in the same pan together yesterday, and there was a little pumpkin left that got mixed in with the potatoes.) Heated the skillet, poured a little oil onto it, and dropped large spoonsful of the mixture onto the skillet. While they were cooking, I also warmed up some leftover greens. Daddy set the table, and we sat down to eat. Daddy enjoyed ketchup on his patties, and I flavored mine with a mixture of mayonnaise and mustard. Yummy dinner! Neither of us had any idea that we were not eating potato patties until I put away the two extra patties after they cooled. Decided to put them down in the deep part of the freezer, and what should my eyes behold there but…. Oh, no! What is this? The container of leftover mashed potatoes. Now WHAT had I made the potato patties with? We had a little discussion, and then came to the conclusion that I had made the potato patties with the leftover popo (papaya) crisp. I had forgotten all about the crisp being in the fridge and also that I had put the leftover potatoes in the deep section. And it never occurred to me to look closely at what I was using for the patties because (1) both potatoes and crisp were in the same kind of container; (2) there was about the same amount left of each; (3) and the potatoes were white with orange because of some pumpkin in them, and the crisp was white with orange because of the oatmeal topping on the orange popo. So I had not even taken a close look at the contents of the container when I got it out — just started tossing in ingredients. Those seasonings must have disguised the popo well. And we have two “potato” popo patties left for tomorrow. Then we still have leftover mashed potatoes to make into potato patties the next day. 😊 Then we had our nap, after which I made a new popo crisp for Daddy. That’s his favorite snack. Then I worked on the lessons in John most of the afternoon and was thankful for the Lord’s help in getting it finished. This evening, I made the student copy with blanks to fill in. November 5. It was a chilly, foggy, dreary, rainy day in Owena, a day for keeping the fire burning in the wood stove. We didn’t get to finish cleanup outside, but hopefully can do that another day. We did get the new map put up in the meeting room. Took down the old map which was glued onto somewhat heavy corrugated paper but still too flimsy. Found a box (the one that our rocking chair had come in) half of which was just the right size, and glued the old map onto it. Had to set heavy boxes on it for a while until the glue dried. When that was good and dry, we glued the new map on top of the old one. The glue was a little wet so we let that dry for a couple hours — it took a while to dry because of the dampness, and we also had our dinner and nap before we got back to it. Once that was dry, we bordered it with clear package tape. Then it was ready to re-hang. Daddy put up a third board because the old map had only been hanging on two boards — one at the top and one at the bottom and didn’t have any support in the middle. Now the map is much sturdier with the extra cardboard backing and the extra board. Also wrote one e-mail this morning and put some of my tea herbs into containers so I would have easier access to them. Besides finishing the work of putting the map up this afternoon, I sorted and washed a bunch of greens and then installed the photo studio for my camera in the computer. That turned out to be a waste of time since it has to be registered and can’t be used without the internet. So I figured I may as well uninstall it. Right after supper I had a warm bath in a chilly room. Then I cut up the greens with some onions and put them in the pressure cooker to cook while I did the dishes. Later this evening, I wrote in my journal and worked on the next lesson in John.
October 27. Daddy preached this morning on victory over sin, and Amos preached in the afternoon on God’s faithfulness to keep His promises. In the afternoon, Daddy took the ACER up to Matthew’s house and was finally able to receive all the e-mails that have been trying to come in for the past couple days. Then he stuck an e-mail in the outbox from drafts, but I was thankful it didn’t send because it wasn’t completed yet. However, I had to bring the file up and copy the contents into a word file before deleting it from the outbox, because otherwise it would have completely disappeared. We have discovered that happens to any e-mails that are taken out of the outbox. In the evening, Daddy tried and tried and tried to send the e-mail that WAS ready to go out, and finally, just before the evening ended, it went on its way. At times throughout the day, I did more proof-reading of Matthew, spent time checking over the Proverbs lessons for Amos to teach the youth, and put some finishing touches on the next lesson in John for school. Tried to write a quiz for it, too, but the computer kept reformatting my numbering so I finally gave up. It was time for our bed-time devotions anyway October 25. Lots of fog this morning; but praise the Lord, it lifted quickly, and there was sunshine for much of the morning. Daddy arrived home around 10:15. After a welcome hug and kiss, I went back to class. The first thing Daddy did was check the generator to see what the problem was. There was a loose wire, which is one thing I thought of. He didn’t have any trouble starting the generator after tightening up that wire. He ran the generator for a while to get the freezer cold again. By noon, the skies had clouded up again, and it is raining this afternoon. So far it is not raining hard like yesterday. The water was quite dirty again this afternoon. After the water pressure came back, and the water came with more force instead of a trickle, more dirt came through the lines. It got clean enough later in the afternoon for Daddy to finish filling the washing machine (Sunny had dumped in what was in the buckets) and for me to wash the greens that I had bought yesterday so I can cook them up this evening. Also had a few items to put away that Daddy had purchased at the SIL store. While I was busy doing those things the computer was on charge with the inverter. I should have had it plugged into the power when Daddy had the generator running this morning. As soon as the computer was charged, I prepared the next science quiz, transferred it to the flash drive, and made sure the next Bible lesson was on the flash drive as well so I can get those printed out. Wrote some in journal. Tried to send/receive e-mails — unsuccessful. When time ran out, I went to the kitchen and cut up the onion and greens I had washed, seasoned them, and set them on to cook. Peeled eggs that I had boiled yesterday and made egg salad for our supper sandwiches. Then we ate supper. After supper, I washed dishes, had bath, and did some work in the new computer. Praise the Lord that the Microsoft pro was able to be installed, and the publisher is useable. October 26. We went to prayer meeting early in the morning. Afterward Sunny did the laundry, swept the floors, and cleaned Daddy’s shoes that got muddy on Friday when he returned from SIL. I know I kept busy while she was working, but don’t recall what I kept busy with. Before dinner, Daddy and I went out and walked around the yard for a while to get a little exercise, fresh air, and sunshine. I believe I put math exercises on the chalkboard in the afternoon and worked on some other files in the new computer both in the afternoon and evening. |
