June 17. It was quite a day. People coming and going from dawn ‘til dark. Besides people coming to bring or get phones, Anna Jean was the first to come, ready to do laundry. After I had my Friday morning tea, I started making pancakes as I only had one left and needed two for breakfast, and also Daddy needed something for snack. Made extra for other days of breakfast so I’d be a little bit ahead. I also scrubbed a few carrots and got out a knife, peeler, and pan so Anna Jean could peel and cut up the carrots when she finished hanging the clothes. I had eaten one pancake when Nehemiah arrived. He was earlier than usual, so I asked him to please wait while I finished my breakfast. So he sat in the classroom and read his Bible. Anna Jean was working on carrots and was also busy helping people at the door. Somebody brought eggs so she checked those and helped the person get what they wanted in exchange. After I finished my second pancake, I gave her instructions for the rest of her work and went to work with Nehemiah on phonics. Showed him the discipleship books first and asked him if he wanted to study them on his own or have Daddy study with him. He said he wanted Daddy to teach him to make sure he understands. After review, we covered two new letters today — t and m.; and he has eight spelling words to study for a quiz on Monday. We finished our phonics lesson about 10:45 because I had other work to do. I couldn’t remember what time I started either, but it was earlier than usual. But Nehemiah stayed and talked with Daddy. After Nehemiah left, it was dinner time. After nap, I finally got to read a portion of I Samuel and start a Bible study, but didn’t get to finish. Just before going to the kitchen to make tortillas, I put new lessons in the SCMS students’ notebooks as they will be starting some new classes on Monday. I never did get the tortillas made, however. Just before I started getting the ingredients together, Paqo came with a couple popo. Then I had only measured out the flour and cut up some seaweed when Miriam came with a popo. She just said she was thinking of me and wanted to bring me something. It had been a long time since I had seen her, and she promised to come back again. By then it was too late to finish making the tortillas. Didn’t want to have supper too late because there would be dishes to do afterward and then a bath to take. I also wanted to start some printing of lessons for Nehemiah while Daddy was washing up. Then we had snack and devotions. June 18. 52º again this morning. Clear during the night, but clouded over after the sun started coming up so there was no sunshine to warm our bodies. Thankful to the Lord for the wood stove. We never did get a chance to go outside for fresh air and a little walk. People were knocking on the door from early morning until sunset. Anna Jean came and practiced keyboard, and I helped her a bit with a new song. I did some printing, finishing preparing some lessons for Nehemiah to come to SCMS classes. Still have a couple books to print. I stitched up the sides of a lining for a small bilum (string bag) and then put it in the bilum and stitched around the top edge. Then I used a piece with a buttonhole that had been on a blouse for rolling up the sleeve, and I stitched that to the top edge of the bilum on one side, and a pretty marbled bead like a button on the other side. That little bilum is now finished. This afternoon, I finally got tortillas made and am thankful to the Lord for something good and healthy to eat. By the time we had eaten supper and I had cleaned up and done the dishes, I was quite tired out. This evening, I colored three outreach pictures because I was too tired to concentrate on a computer project. Coloring is more relaxing as it doesn’t take as much concentration. “O sing unto the LORD a new song; for he hath done marvellous things: his right hand, and his holy arm, hath gotten him the victory.” (Psalm 98:1) “The LORD hath made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.” (Isaiah 52:10) June 19. Not too cold this morning, and the sun came shining through early and warmed up the house and the world around us. After making pancakes for Daddy’s breakfast, cutting up and cooking some popo for syrup for my pancakes, eating breakfast, making the bed, and doing a couple other little tasks, I was blessed by reading about young David’s trust in the Lord as I continued Bible study in I Samuel 17. This afternoon, I washed my hair and proofread the second half of the Revelation 19 study. Right after supper, I had my bath as the air was already getting chilly. Then I cut up the rest of the popo that I had washed and cut from in the morning, and then did the dishes. Afterward I got out bowls, spoons, and cups for our little fellowship this evening. Mike wasn’t able to come as he had hoped, but Nehemiah and Sunny were here. Since Sunny was late, Nehemiah went ahead and gave us his testimony; and she arrived shortly after he finished that. Then he told us about the work in Kavieng. He was saved in 2009 at the age of 12. He only finished fifth grade, and then went to Bible school in 2017-2019. Since then, he has gone on a number of mission trips, the last being to Kavieng. There, after 37 people were saved, they asked him to stay and teach them. They want him to come back as soon as he can. There is a man there who is asking K10,000 from the government for the church. The rest of the church does not agree, but he still insists on doing it. Nehemiah told them he won’t come back if they accept the money. After Nehemiah’s testimony, we shared a number of verses amongst us as words of encouragement. Then we had a drink of water and snack of popo before they left.

June 15. Not quite as cold this morning, but still down to 55º. There was a layer of fog down in the valley, but I could tell it was not the kind that comes up and covers the world around us. It was thin, and I could see through it here and there. Little patches would break off and come part way into the Owena valley and then disappear. By the time Daddy left Goroka (around 8:30) all the fog was gone. Until I heard the plane coming, I sat out in the sunshine to pray and get warm. Sunny was not here as she usually is when the plane comes. Will need to call her and find out if she is okay. Mike and Nehemiah helped take care of the cargo, and Mike’s landlord, Peter, was with him. It was nice to see Mike and Taqita, and we look forward to a longer visit with them later. It didn’t take long for Daddy and me to get everything put away. We even had a little time to relax before dinner which was a small cup of greens soup and a meat pie each. This afternoon, I got e-mails, updates, and journal notes transferred to Daddy’s computer. Called Sunny to see if she was okay. She had helped carry Philip’s coffee up the mountain and was just on her way back when I called her. She was fine except for her knees. Her father had helped carry Anevina’s coffee, and Junias helped carry Wenke’s. She said she would be down the hill soon and would come see us. And she did. This evening we were both quite tired, so I didn’t work on anything at the computer. Just did some coloring of outreach pictures. June 16. 56º this morning, but chilly because there was a cloud over the sunrise for two hours or so. Daddy eventually started a fire in the wood stove because the house was damp and cold and there was no sunshine outside to warm our bodies. Finally, the cloud cleared away, and I went out and sat in the sunshine about a half hour. After coming inside, I started a Bible study in I Samuel. It was going on mid-morning when I made a cup of coffee. Daddy wanted to go out for a walk as soon as I finished drinking that. Then I would have something else to eat after we got back as all I’d had for breakfast was a smoothie. Before we could get on our way, however, Mike and Taqita came by to spend a little time with us. They stayed and stayed until well after 12:00 so I never did have something else to eat; neither did I get to make spaghetti for dinner as I had planned or make tortillas for my evening lunches. But we enjoyed our visit with Mike and Taqita. The time just went by too quickly. Since it was already late, we decided to have lunch at noon and make spaghetti later for supper. I just used a couple vita-wheat crackers instead of tortillas. Hopefully, I will have a chance to make tortillas tomorrow. After nap, I finished my Bible study I had started in the morning. Then it was just about time to start supper. Peeled and cut up some kaukau (sweet potato) and potatoes first. Once I got the taters and kaukau going, I put water on for spaghetti and made the meat sauce. “But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (I Corinthians 15:57) Note: I got so far behind that I skipped ahead to the journal notes in June. These are the latest journal notes I have from Mom. June 13. Started laundry while I was getting breakfast and reading a chapter in Pidgin Luke. It didn’t look like much wash in the hamper or in the washing machine; but after it was all hung outside, it filled quite a bit of space because there were so many little things — socks, rags, wash cloths and hand towels. It felt so good to be out in the sunshine and hang the clothes. There was a chilly breeze blowing so I did need to cover my head and ears. The temperature was down to 52º again this morning. After laundry was done, I took a chair out and set it in the sunshine so I could soak up some of the sun’s warmth while I was praying. Strong, cool winds blew this afternoon, and some clouds built up in the sky. While I was out there, Ove came along and wanted to borrow a marking pen to label his coffee bags. I did observe a whole train of people from Ahninyauntapeq heading up the hill and carrying bags of coffee. According to Ove, there is lots of coffee around and still more to pick. After I went back into the house later, Nehemiah came by with his phone and little radio to be charged. He, too, was carrying coffee up to the road and was going to meet Mike and family. Wrote several e-mails today and got the updates ready to go to Christy for printing and mailing, or for e-mailing. This afternoon I cut up two popo (papaya) set a little bit aside for my smoothie in the morning and made the rest into a popo crisp for Daddy. Also started getting journal notes ready to send to C&C. Just when I was eating my supper, Anna Jean came by to charge her phone and practice keyboard. It was a good time for her to come as it was bath night again, and I could depend on her to answer the door if anyone came. Nobody came to the door, however, until after I was done. Then Nehemiah came for his phone and radio. Anna Jean played keyboard a bit more and then started getting ready to leave. I’d been asking the Lord for an opportunity to ask her what she thinks the Lord has for her when she finishes missionary training, and was thankful to the Lord for opening that door. She said she really wants to do outreach, visiting and helping those in need, like Yanahdo or people who are sick. She also wants to train up her son in the way that he should go. Her parents say he is their child, but they do not treat him nicely; and he is not their child. She has told them now that God has given her a new life and has given her this child and it is her responsibility to train him up for the Lord. Wherever she goes, she will take the child with her. If the Lord chooses to give her a husband, he will have to accept and train up the child too. I was so busy talking with Anna Jean that I forgot to watch the time, and soon the call came from Daddy. I ran to get the phone and we chatted for about 45 minutes while Anna Jean was still here. After that, she and I continued our conversation. Then I prayed with her before she left about 8:00. After evening snack, I finished getting journal notes ready to send to C&C. June 14. A degree warmer than the past two mornings, but the air felt damp and chillier than the past couple days. As soon as the shadows disappeared in the backyard, and the sun was warming things up, I went and sat in the sunshine to pray. When I came inside, I did a little walking before doing a little Bible study. Added some more to C&C’s e-mail today, but most of my computer time was spent in the study of Revelation 19. Was thankful for the Lord’s help in completing that chapter this evening. April 1. Another very chilly overcast day. A good day for keeping the wood stove going. Anna Jean came early to do laundry. It rained once lightly while things were hanging out, but a good portion of the clothes still got dry before the next rain came along a little after mid-morning. We hurried and brought the dry things in and left the wet things hanging out in the rain. Later (when it wasn’t raining), we brought them inside and hung them in the schoolroom. I had Anna Jean cut up veggies again today, and we threw them all together into the large pressure cooker to make soup for dinner. I was busy working on the progress report this morning and almost forgot about browning some mince and pureeing the soup so dinner was a little bit late. But the soup tasted really good and was the perfect meal for a cool, rainy day. April 2. The weather pattern continues the same as it has been the past couple days. It was a good day for the wood stove again and a good day for cooking. In the morning, I made my pancakes and added grated apple, almonds, and molasses. Savored a couple of those for breakfast. I was out of tortillas so busied myself making those before supper. After breakfast and quiet time, I wrote an e-mail to Ellen with anniversary wishes for her and Mel. Then I continued working on the progress report. Late morning, Amos and Wan came and worked on the schoolroom. In a couple hours’ time, they got one piece of plywood put up and one ooqdi* border on the side of the door. Nuanda wasn’t able to come because he was wanted to help install the solar power for the health center. MAF brought in the equipment and workers yesterday. Anna Jean came this morning, too, and worked in the flower garden for a while. Daddy received a missed call to call Mike so I was on call to supply tools that Amos and Wan needed while Daddy was talking to Mike. Daddy had time left on the phone so he called Nehemiah too. Praise the Lord, Nehemiah is doing better, but the people have told him it would be better for him not to come back to the mainland right now. This is the time of year when the sea is tempestuous, and it is not safe for him to travel across. Also Pastor Holmes is there and will be distributing the Bibles that BIMI has provided for the schools. Nehemiah will be helping him with that ministry. I was thankful for the Lord’s help in finishing the progress report by midday. Daddy proofread it before nap, and I proofread it again afterward. I warmed up my soup for my dinner at noon as I hadn’t eaten since breakfast. Daddy didn’t eat dinner until around 1:00 after Amos and Wan left. Late afternoon Judy came and started cutting the grass inside the fence as it is getting quite high. She will finish it on Monday. *Ooqdi – a nice, strong wood for building things April 3. Made pancakes for Daddy for his breakfast and warmed up a couple of mine for myself. Had quiet time. Took the hem down on a pair of Daddy’s trousers so I can shorten them. Daddy turned the water off and added glue to the pipe to see if we could slow down the leaks. It has to be off for 24 hours for the glue to dry properly. After a bit, we noticed there were little bubbles in the glue — not a good sign. The glue would probably not hold. The bubbles were filled with water. Even though the line was shut off tightly, water was still seeping through. The pipes are probably worn at the shut-off valve. Daddy and I went out for a short stretch in the sunshine. There was still a chilly breeze blowing so we did not stay out long. We are thankful for more pleasant weather this morning and that we did not have to have a fire in the wood stove. After we came inside, I had a light snack and spent a little time in Bible study in Joshua. Most of my computer time today was spent on the study of Revelation chapter 18. I worked a little bit this evening on writing Bible primer #4. I also wrote an e-mail to Pastor Ogle and sent him the March progress report, colored another picture for outreach class, cut Daddy’s hair, and cut up rolls into bread slices. This evening we listened to a very heart-searching sermon from Philippians 2:17-21, entitled A Coworker Who Cares, by Dr. Rick Flanders. We had just barely gotten started listening when Wenera sent a missed call so we paused the sermon and Daddy called Wenera. Praise the Lord for His answering prayer and for providing another house for Mike and family. While there was still time on the phone, Daddy called David too. When the phone calls were done, we finished listening to the sermon. Then we prayed and got ready to go to bed. It was too late to sing. March 30. The morning was colder than what we’ve been having; but the sun was shining, and the fog was thin and rose quickly. A little while after my breakfast and quiet time, Amos and Mata came to talk with us. Afterward, we went outside for a stretch in the sunshine. I didn’t walk up to the airstrip today because I’ve had such a bad headache yesterday and today (finally took artemisinin today) and I didn’t feel strong enough for that walk. Daddy went on up to the airstrip; and shortly after his return, Nuanda came to see us again. He, too, asked about what needs to be done to get the school going for his children and explained to us all the things that are, or will be, keeping him so busy. One thing is that there will be a get-together in a couple weeks with Christy’s husband’s family so they can pay the bride price for Christy. He also has been asked to distribute the Bibles for this area, the ones BIMI has provided for the school students. And then there is to be a world missions conference in Bulolo. What time I had to work at the computer today was spent on the notes for the work of a missionary.. It is very chilly again this evening so I took a bath as soon as I finished supper. I prefer to do the dishes first, but wanted to get a bath before the air got any chillier. March 31. Overcast, windy, and chilly today. Daddy got the wood stove going for the first time since we’ve been home from town. MAF was scheduled to come in today and bring our bottled gas, but once again the flight was cancelled because the other place they were scheduled to go had bad weather. Started writing the March progress report but was in the kitchen for a couple hours before dinner, cutting up a popo, making a popo pie, and making a couple tortillas from the dough scraps from the pie crust. This afternoon, I printed more outreach pictures and colored the two for the next lesson. March 28. After breakfast and quiet time, I put the three Revelation studies and the set of journal notes into e-mails to go to C&C. Then I gathered up the trash and took it out to burn, and Daddy and I spent some time soaking up the sun’s warmth. After coming back inside, I had a snack, put clean trash bags out, and read the rest of Joshua chapter 9. Then I put rice, lentils, and chicken sausages in a saucepan and set it on the stove to cook for dinner. My computer time most of the rest of the day was spent finishing up English primer number three. Wenera called in the evening. What a joy to hear reports of his work and to realize what a change has taken place within! He is always busy seeking souls, giving out tracts, preaching the gospel to the lost. How we need more brightly shining lights in this land of darkness! March 29. A cool day, but the Lord gave us a little bit of sunshine and enough wind to dry the clothes. After breakfast and quiet time, I was encouraged through a brief Bible study in Joshua chapter 10. We also received a text of encouragement from Nehemiah. Daddy and I enjoyed a refreshing walk in the fresh air. Walked up the airstrip and back today. Did some work today on the work of a missionary. Printed the rest of the Revelation course — church history students’ notes, collated them, punched holes, and put them away for when they are needed — soon. Also printed another third of the outreach lessons, collated and punched them, and put them away. They will be needed soon as well. |
