August 14. Today was quite different from yesterday—very cool and foggy all morning. Sun came out early afternoon, and it was a joy to get out in the sunshine for a while after nap. Rains came back late afternoon, but the clouds were high, and there was no fog. I suspect there will be fog in the morning. Daddy called right at 7:00, and I was happy to talk with him. It was late when lotu started, and I counted 18 or 19 present. Mike gave a very good message on giving, using the story of the young boy in John 6 who gave his lunch, then the widow who gave all her living, and ending with II Corinthians 8:12. People stood around and talked for a while after the meeting. More trouble has come up making it difficult for these people to travel the roads to anywhere. Consequently, it was already going on 9:30 when we started school. We did some math review, and they started their written lesson. Then they had their English test, and last of all history class. It was about 12:30 when the students left. I warmed up lunch and ate. Cleaned the chalkboard and then had nap. After nap, I spent some time in the sunshine before starting to translate verses for Eric. Took a break from translating because some of the verses are already in the computer, and I would just copy them. Practiced keyboard. Then turned on the computer and copied the translation of a few other verses. While the computer was recharging, I had supper. “I am the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt: open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it.” Psalm 81:10 August 15. The temperature just before I went to bed last night was down to 57º so I knew it was going to be a cold night. The sky was full of bright stars, and the moon lightened up the sky too. I went to bed with lots of extra layers to cover me. This morning, the outside temperature was just below the 50º mark, and it was 53º in the kitchen. But the sun was shining, and the sky was clear. There was some fog down in the valleys, but the fog must have felt the cold too as it seemed to have a hard time getting up out of the valley; and by the time it started getting up, the sun melted it away. The sunshine warmed the day up quickly. At break time, the students and I all went outside and soaked up some of that sunshine. It was going on 1:30 when the students left today. Then I had lunch and a nap. This afternoon, I worked on notes for teaching the students from Galatians, but will not have anything ready for tomorrow. They will have their quiz in Bible class, and we will go straight to music class after that. Hopefully by Monday I can have some notes ready for a lesson in Galatians. After supper, I wrote some math exercises on the chalkboard. Then I washed and prepared some yams and kaukau, put them in the pressure cooker, and set them on to cook. At 7:00, Daddy called, and we enjoyed a nice chat. Afterward, I worked more on the notes for teaching Galatians. Then I did the dishes.

August 12. Rained during the night, but the Lord gave us a pretty nice morning with several periods of sunshine. Daddy called MAF this morning, and Ben said they may be able to get him out tomorrow. He will call at 7:00 a.m. tomorrow for weather. Daddy spent the rest of the morning and afternoon packing so he’ll be ready if things work out. He still doesn’t know for sure about a flight back. The sun was shining so nicely before we went for nap, and the air felt warm and pleasant. I had hoped to get out in the sunshine after nap; but before nap ended, the summer rains came pounding across the roof. The rains started and stopped several times; but from about 4:00 until 7:30, it rained continuously. Amos’ yard was looking like a lake. After nap, I wrote up the shopping list for Daddy to take to town. Then I started an e-mail to C&C until the computer battery went low. After that, I worked on lesson plans for school tomorrow and put a few math exercises on the chalkboard. Had bath directly after supper because the air was already getting quite chilly. After bath, I practiced keyboard and then put water on for dishes. Wrote more of C&C’s e-mail until the water was hot, and finished the e-mail after washing the dishes. August 13. How gracious is our God! After all the rain He sent us yesterday afternoon-evening, He sent no rain during the night (as far as we can tell) and gave us a beautiful, warm, sunny day. Tonight there is a full moon, and the sky is studded with stars for the first time in many weeks. The plane came shortly before noon and took Daddy to town. The students helped him carry his cargo up to the airstrip. They weren’t gone long, as the plane wasn’t on the ground long. It was a delight to soak up a little sunshine as I stood outside and waited for the plane to take off. It was about 1:15 when the students left for home and I had lunch. After lunch, I enjoyed a nap, and that without getting under a blanket, for the first time in many weeks. And after nap, I washed my hair, and made up an English test on subjects and predicates. Had to write it all out by hand, and later I made photo copies. After supper, I took out the garbage, wrote some math exercises on the chalkboard, cooked up popo that was left in the fridge, photo copied the English test, washed the dishes, had a bowl of soup and brought one bowlful up to pressure in the pressure cooker with the pumpkin. So I will still have some soup for tomorrow. After sponge bath, I started work on the quarterly newsletter.
August 11. My dear husband’s birthday. Not much fog today, but clouds and no sunshine. Raining this evening. Daddy started not feeling well yesterday and felt weak and tired today, but nothing that he can put a finger on. Has been covering himself with aspirin or ibuprofen and extra vitamin C and Airborne. Around 9:00 this morning, we called Christy and Connie and enjoyed a nice, but too short, chat with them. After that, Daddy went and lay down. The school students came, and we practiced our song once more that they would sing in lotu. Dallas led the singing for lotu. Daniel gave more testimony and had Emma read some verses in English to support his testimony. (Emma reads English very well. She is in fifth grade.) Then he and Emma and Apekio sang a special. Afterward there was prayer, and then the school students sang their special. Matthew preached since Daddy wasn’t feeling strong enough. He gave a really good message on sin in the life of a believer. Lilian was there today, too, for the first time in well over a month; and we were thankful that she heard the message. We trust that it will bring conviction and repentance. It was a surprise to see Mandah here this morning too. Amos did a good job preaching this afternoon on There Is No Death for the Believer—Christ has abolished death. After lotu, I proofread the progress report and then got it ready to send to Pastor Ogle along with a short e-mail. After supper, I practiced keyboard before doing dishes, and Daddy sent out the e-mail and received a few in. After doing dishes, I got two weeks worth of journal notes ready to attach to an e-mail and send to Connie.
August 9. Our second special daughter, Connie Sue, turns 45 today. My, how the years have flown! The Lord gave us another mostly dry, warmer day with some sunshine and blue sky. After nap today, I went outside and walked around in the fresh air for a while. Then came back in and finished writing Monday’s lesson plans which I had started during school hours when the students were doing independent work. Also wrote math problems on the chalkboard. So I believe everything is all set for Monday. Busy after supper making a popo crisp, taking out the garbage, making a quick birthday card to send to Connie, washing dishes, emptying and refilling the filter pitcher, refilling my Celtic sea salt water bottle, practicing keyboard to be ready to play Sunday morning for the students to sing a special, writing in journal, having a snack, having a sponge bath, and starting to copy, by hand, Galatians chapter 1 in Pidgin so I can make photo copies for the students so we can start studying Galatians. (Even though I can’t print from this one-and-only useable—right now—printer, I can still use the printer to make photo copies.) “To the chief Musician, Altaschith, A Psalm or Song of Asaph. Unto thee, O God, do we give thanks, unto thee do we give thanks: for that thy name is near thy wondrous works declare.” Psalm 75:1 August 10. Praise the Lord for another mostly sunny, dry day! There was just a small group in lotu this morning. Some people are sick and others were probably off to their gardens while the weather is nice. Amos was there and took charge of the prayer time. After lotu, Sunny did the laundry. We were so thankful for a nice day to hang the clothes outside. After doing laundry, she cut up a pumpkin and then swept all the floors, the back veranda, and the back steps. I finished copying Galatians chapter 1 and started chapter 2 so I could fill up the second page. Later I’ll finish chapter 2 on another page or whatever it takes. After dinner, we brought the dry clothes in, including the bedsheet, made up the bed, and enjoyed a nice nap. The rest of the clothes were dry by the time our nap was over, and Daddy got them in. I cleaned all the pots and pans and other kitchen items out of the cupboard so I can remove the contact paper and cover the cupboard shelves with leftover linoleum. Then I practiced keyboard, folded and put away all the clothes, and worked on the July progress report until supper time. Finished the July progress report this evening. August 7. Up dark and early this morning—laundry day. Judy came to wash clothes as soon as Daddy had turned on the generator. She did not hang them outside, though, as it was raining. The Lord did give us an hour or so of sunshine during the middle of the day, and Daddy let the fire out thinking that the weather would stay warm the rest of the day. But it wasn’t long before the clouds returned, the cold winds blew, and it began to rain again. Daddy was able to revive the fire so we could keep the house warm. After breakfast, while we were waiting for people to come for lotu, we decided to hang the clothes around the house. Couldn’t hang any in the schoolroom because we would be having classes after lotu. But we hung all the shirts, blouses, and my dress on hangers, and there was room on the lines in the bathroom for most everything else. We hung a handful of things in the other bathroom, and the rags got hung over the edge of the laundry basket. By the end of the day, nearly everything was dry. Amos was in charge of lotu this morning and preached on the kingdom of God. The students just had math, spelling, and history this morning. While they were doing independent work in spelling, I got the rice and chicken started for dinner. After nap and afternoon snack, I graded their spelling lessons, made up tomorrow’s lesson plans, and made sure everything was ready for teaching the lessons. This evening, I practiced keyboard right after doing dishes. Now Amos is holding youth meeting. I had thought about installing the Canon printer on this computer this evening so we have a way to do printing, but remembered at the last minute that the CD drive doesn’t work in this computer. We had installed the Brother printer in Daddy’s computer hoping to use it for printing, but now his computer doesn’t work at all. So now we are wondering if Thompson was right about the backsetter on the hard drive being some of the software, and we are wondering if it is the Brother printer software. If it is, can it really be restored by removing that software? Daddy is thinking of going out to town to see what can be done about the computers because he has no computer to use now, and we are limited to what we can do on this one, and we cannot do any printing. Note: Dad’s computer problem ended up being a bad memory card. This was fixed by getting a new memory card. “My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.” Psalm 73:26 August 8. Praise the Lord for a little bit more sunshine today and a little blue sky and less rain. Praise the Lord for continued healing for my eye and for peace about canceling the trip to Australia. Praise the Lord for all those who are praying. Praise the Lord, we were finally able to get the last of our e-mails in today. Now it is time to write e-mails again and to work on the quarterly newsletter. Since Daddy’s computer has also crashed, and we have no means of printing, and we can do very little work with this computer because of the old battery, and ministry work has pretty much come to a standstill, Daddy took time today to start making arrangements to go to town, take both the computers for CRMF to look at, and take the new computer that was a gift from the Mitchells and get Microsoft installed, then go to SIL and make the payment for our cargo. Dallas & Mike were quite late for class this morning. A man from the neighboring village where there has been trouble, had come over here, apparently to feel things out, and Dallas and Mike were talking with him. The man was advised to tell his people to stay in their own village until everyone was here to work on getting things settled. The girls and I had already prayed and started learning I John 2:4 in Pidgin, and they had started writing the answers to the questions on their new Bible lesson sheet. When everyone finished the questions, it was too late to start the lesson so we started music class a few minutes early. They always enjoy the extra time to sing, as we are so thankful to have an adapter now so we can sing with the keyboard. They are practicing a couple short songs to sing on Sunday, and learning the parts to a couple other songs. After nap I finished making up tomorrow’s lesson plans and put some review math problems on the chalkboard. Then I translated a few verses from Jeremiah that Daniel had asked for. Before supper, I sorted and washed another bundle of greens and a few spring onions; and after supper, I cut them up and put them on to cook. After bath, I practiced keyboard. Did eye exercises. Had snack. Read the emails that had come in today. Wrote in journal. Hello, everyone! I'm sorry for the delay in updating this site for Mom and Dad. I didn't have much journal notes for a while; but now I have several sets. So I will try to catch up a bit. Thank you for being patient with me.
August 5. We didn’t hear much rain during the night, but the Lord sent us another very foggy, cool, day with periods of rain. Consequently, NTM was not able to get in with our fuel and computer. It was back to school today. The students were all here by 8:00. After prayer, we reviewed I John 2:4. Then I spent the rest of the class storying about our adventures in trusting the Lord, and challenging the class with our main goal — to share the gospel. Praise the Lord for a new adapter for the keyboard and that we were able to sing and practice music with the keyboard once again. They did well in their math review and started the written work for lesson 20. We reviewed some old spelling words and started a new spelling lesson. And in history class, they did map work. While they were working on that, I warmed up dinner, and Daddy and I ate. After nap, I washed up a couple popos (papayas). Made a popo crisp with one and a part of the other. Put some in a container for eating raw and fresh. Then I cleaned the chalkboard and got lesson plans ready for tomorrow. Wrote out a brief lesson on the Bible for my students to help me translate into Owena tomorrow so I can use it in sharing the good news with people who come to the door. Did a little walking and praying, and Daddy and I talked about some things together until supper time. Before I’d finished supper, there was a knock on the door. We heard female voices so I went to the door. Kristina and four of her children, plus one of her brother Tukila’s children, plus Amanda were at the door. Calvin wanted to give us a popo, and they all stayed a while to visit. Kristina shared her story of salvation, saying that Christy led her to the Lord way back when she was a young girl and some of the Owena girls used to come sleep out together with Christy and Connie on Friday evenings. Christy and Connie would teach them the Bible. Kristina says she has never forgotten how the Lord saved her, and she always remembers to pray for Christy and Connie. It was an encouraging testimony. Practiced keyboard for about a half hour before washing up. Then I spent some time at Daddy’s computer adding entries to the dictionary for the book of Matthew. “9Cast me not off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength faileth…. 16I will go in the strength of the Lord GOD: I will make mention of thy righteousness, even of thine only. 17O God, thou hast taught me from my youth: and hitherto have I declared thy wondrous works. 18Now also when I am old and greyheaded, O God, forsake me not; until I have showed thy strength unto this generation, and thy power to every one that is to come. 19Thy righteousness also, O God, is very high, who hast done great things: O God, who is like unto thee!” Psalm 71:9,16-19 August 6. So much fog and clouds with more rain today. We thank the Lord for the rain, while we continue to ask Him to send us some sunshine and dry weather. Dallas and Mike were fairly late for class this morning, but we waited a while instead of starting because we didn’t know if they would be coming or if they would be involved in the meeting to discuss the trouble with a neighboring village. Mike and Dallas did show up for school around 8:15. They said there will be a meeting later, but people told them to come to school first. After they came they storied about the situation, and then we had prayer. After that, I had them translate some sentences for me that I hope to use in sharing the gospel. So we ended up going a little overtime in Bible class and then went right into music class. Since I was pretty much free most of spelling class time while the students worked independently, Daddy and I started checking more of James. We hadn’t worked very long, however, when Daddy’s computer froze up. He couldn’t get it to work so we didn’t have any way to continue working on translation. I have been working on a dictionary list in his computer for the book of Matyu so I can get copies of Matyu printed out for the men to proofread, and became concerned because that wasn’t backed up. It just seems like the enemy is fighting with all his might to keep us from accomplishing the works that God sent us to do here. Right now, Daddy’s computer is the only one we can print from because we can’t install the new printers in this old computer. But if it isn’t working, there isn’t any way to use it for printing or for making files either. Please pray as the Devil seems to be very intent on stopping the work of the Lord, both in Owena and in other ministries of other missionaries in Papua New Guinea. Thanks! After school, Judy filled up the washing machine so she can wash clothes in the morning. Dallas and Mike chopped firewood for us because we have been using it up so quickly in this damp, chilly weather. We were hoping to do more work on James in the afternoon, but since the computer wasn’t cooperating, I went ahead and washed my hair, made a chalk tray to nail up at the base of the chalkboard, and did a little other work in the schoolroom. Daddy helped by nailing the chalk tray on. Daddy let the fire out this afternoon as it was a little warmer than it has been even though the weather was still a bit cloudy and rainy. If we keep it going all the time, the house gets too stuffy and low on oxygen, and it is a bit overwhelming. Right after supper, I washed dishes; and right after that, I had bath before the house got too cold. Daddy, in the mean time, had set up the old computer to get e-mails; and, praise the Lord, he was able to get a good connection which lasted for quite a while and brought in most of the e-mails that were backed up in our account. These were all the ones we had gotten in town in the other computers. The most recent e-mails haven’t been received yet. After bath, I started up Daddy’s computer again. It started right up, and I copied the files I’d been using so they are now on the flash drive. Then I opened one of the files so I could continue work in it; but when I tried to open another one, an error message came up saying that the computer needed to restart, and that it would restart as soon as it collected some information about the error. But even after collecting 100% of the information, it never did restart. So Daddy shut it down while he had his bath, and I started working on journal notes in the ACER. “3The mountains shall bring peace to the people, and the little hills, by righteousness. 18Blessed be the LORD God, the God of Israel, who only doeth wondrous things. 19And blessed be his glorious name for ever: and let the whole earth be filled with his glory; Amen, and Amen.” Psalm 72:3,18,19 |
