April 22. The third dry, warm, sunny day in a row. Thank you, Lord, for answering prayer. The kids who were home for a holiday from the schools in town left here today to head back to school. Matthew went part way with Sosthenes. Then he came back and spent the rest of the morning, and part of the afternoon, finishing the kitchen walls. It was going on 2:00 before he left so we had a late nap today. Today was the beginning of the sixth week of school so next week will be a holiday for the students, and for me too. We have divided the school year into six 6-week periods and one 3-week period. That gives the students more frequent opportunities to help their families with coffee picking, garden work, etc. The students finished their science project in their afternoon class—making a bulletin board of pictures and objects that show order in God’s creation. This afternoon, after I finished tomorrow’s lesson plans, I restarted the ladies’ meeting lesson that the computer stole yesterday evening. That file kept telling me that they could not save my work. And the next thing I knew, all the work I had just completed was gone. So today I decided to make a new file for the new set of lessons. This evening, I finished the ladies’ meeting lesson and also copied out a science quiz and printed copies for the students for tomorrow. “And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.” Revelation 21:6 Praise God that the water of life is offered freely to anyone who is thirsty. April 23. The Lord sent us a little rain at the beginning of last night, but we woke up to clear skies and sunshine this morning. It was such a lovely day, and I longed so to get outside. So that is exactly what I did this afternoon after cutting Daddy’s hair. I walked around the yard, doing my best to skirt the hundreds of ant hills that are out there, and enjoying the flowers and sunshine and fresh air. Before I got up from nap, Daddy took the computer up the hill, and, for the first time in six days, was able to get in e-mails and send out the one that had been sitting in the outbox for the past six days. It has been somewhat of a disappointment to have so little communication with family and friends. Shortly after my little walk in the sunshine, I got busy making tortillas. Finished my crackers yesterday so needed to make something else for supper sandwiches. Tonight I made egg salad with the last egg, and Daddy and I shared that, having egg salad sandwiches with cucumber. “And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.” Revelation 22:17 A companion to last night’s verse. “Whosoever will.” The water is free. Let’s invite people to come and drink.

This morning after breakfast, I worked on conversation lessons until the computer battery ran low. Then I turned it off, and put it on the inverter for a charge. It was going on 10:00 anyway and would be time for lotu. Just about the time Mike finished Sunday school, however, and the door to our house area was opened so he could put the easel away, strong blasts of cool air blew into the house from the far windows of the meeting room. I knew I wouldn’t be able to sit in that wind, and it was too warm to wear my hooded jacket out there that late in the morning. A few minutes later, I also had a bad coughing spell. I thought I was feeling much better today until that spasmodic coughing came along. Am also feeling sick to my stomach from the bactrim I’ve been taking. Consequently, I did not go out into the meeting room for the church service, but sat in the house area again and listened. Sometimes having walls that are not sound proof is a blessing. Daddy preached this morning on the resurrection and Mike translated. Then Daddy gave opportunity for people to come, if need be, and prepare their hearts for partaking of the Lord’s supper which would follow in the next service. I went to nap right after dinner. I’ve really been wiped out with this cold and then not feeling well from the medicine. Slept about an hour and a half. Amos had charge of the second meeting, and Daddy said that he did a good job. The four school students tried to sing one of the songs we learned in school, but Dallas just could not get the tenor part. So they finally sang it using their own harmony. This afternoon, I worked on checking the book of James for grammar, spelling, understanding, and completeness. Later will come the final check when the two of us can work together (after our computers are in operation again). Finished checking James 1 this evening and also checked chapter 2. “13Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong. 14Let all your things be done with charity.” I Corinthians 16:13,14
April 19. Rain off and on through the night, and dense fog through half of the morning. We are thankful for a short period of sunshine in the middle of the day. Today I started on Bactrim because, after a course of amoxicillin, I was not the better, and even began to get worse. Maybe what I have is a viral infection and not bacterial. Our nap was a bit later today as we gave the students leftover greens and pumpkin to eat for a lunch break. Usually they just go on working on their studies until I finish lunch and then I work with them until class time is over. For their last class, they are working on a bulletin board project for science, with a display of pictures and actual things from nature which represent order in God’s creation. While they were working on their project, I erased and washed the chalkboard. Then Anna Jean stayed and filled the washing machine with water and refilled the buckets so they are full of water for rinse. The two men stayed to chop firewood. We went for nap right after Anna Jean left, and the men were still sawing and chopping. This afternoon, I got lesson plans ready for Monday. This evening, I worked on music lessons and then printed those out. April 20. Praise the Lord for a dry, sunny day. Such a lovely day for hanging out the laundry. And there was even a little bit of sunset this evening in the spaces between the dark clouds. After prayer lotu, Anna Jean did the laundry and Judy started preparing veggies--uxai, onions, and carrots for one pot; yams and sweet potatoes for the other. When Anna Jean finished hanging clothes, she helped Judy with the veggies. There were a couple dozen or more small carrots to peel so just that part took up quite a bit of Judy’s time. When that job was done, Judy took out the garbage and burned the trash, and Anna Jean swept the floors. They each made themselves a cup of coffee before they went home. Shortly after they left, several of the church men came to start putting up the plywood walls on the outer wall of the kitchen. I had the two pots of food cooking on the stove, but moved them to the wood stove as soon as they were done pressuring. Dinner time soon came along, and Daddy and I took our bowls of soup and ate in the office. After dinner, I went and took down the clothes. I brought in the hang-up clothes, and Daddy went out and got the basket for me. Then I took a nap; but Daddy waited up for the men to finish the part of the job they were working on. When I got up an hour and a half later, they were just about to put up the first piece of plywood. Daddy thought they would go home after that, but they didn’t. They wanted to try to finish the job. Daddy then took the computer up the hill to try to get and send e-mail, but could not get a connection. It has been several days since we have been able to get a connection. When Daddy came back, he had a nap. The men worked on until nearly supper time and finished a little over half of the wall. They stopped there for today because it would be dark before they could finish any more. Part of the morning, afternoon, and evening, I tried to think of some ideas for English conversation. Just learning about English is not too profitable unless they learn to speak it properly. I also got memory verse cards ready for Mata for this coming ladies’ meeting and printed them out this evening. April 17. The night was cold and so were the first couple hours of daylight; but the day warmed up nicely, and we praise the Lord for another dry and mostly sunny day! Gibson preached in lotu this morning. He is a very good reader and translator. Then followed school from 9:00 to 12:00, three classes—Math, English, and Science. This afternoon, I washed my hair, put eggs on to boil for egg salad for supper, cleaned the chalkboard and wrote math exercises on it for tomorrow, and finished preparing a supplementary worksheet on proper nouns for English class. This evening, I made sure I had my bath right after doing dishes, before the evening got too cold. Then I wrote a couple e-mails, and Daddy worked on sending them. Only one went out. Hopefully the other will go out tomorrow. At least it didn’t disappear—not yet anyway—but I kept a copy of it in a word file just in case. While Daddy was sending e-mails, I strained kefir and made a new batch and also fixed a small snack. After that, I made a file of some verses that Daddy wants to use for this Sunday’s sermon. Then I printed the verses and printed copies of two English worksheets. April 18. A loud thud suddenly awakened me at midnight last night. I thought perhaps a rat was on the kitchen counter and had knocked my water bottle onto the floor. I hastened out of bed and into the kitchen. No sign of the rat having been on the counter. Where else would it have knocked something down? The pantry. Oh, no! A previously unopened jar of mayonnaise on the floor, the lid off and full of mayonnaise, and a streak of mayonnaise across the floor. How did the rat ever get that jar from the back of the shelf over to the edge? The jar’s seal must have broken on impact and the lid loosened up (perhaps it was not on tight to start with) -- that’s all I could figure. I spent the next fifteen to twenty minutes cleaning up mayonnaise. I am thankful that it didn’t take me long to get back to sleep after I went back to bed. Didn’t hear the rat the rest of the night. The Lord gave us a very cool and cloudy day today with afternoon rains. It started raining shortly before the end of school. The students hung around a while, waiting for the rain to slow down; but it never did, so they finally went on home. Much of the afternoon, I worked on tomorrow’s lesson plans, including writing math exercises on the chalkboard and finding various size pieces of colored paper for the students to paste pictures on for their science project. I also made some chocolate chip bars as there isn’t much for snacks since the bananas and popo ran out. We do have another popo which should be ready to cut up tomorrow. This evening, I made up a worksheet for plural nouns and printed copies, scanned and printed some copies of the paragraph for the students to practice finding nouns tomorrow, and made up a schedule of song leaders for the ladies’ meetings. After that I worked on future ladies’ meeting lessons. April 15. Praise the Lord for a nice, dry day. The dead rat stench is still pretty much with us. When will it ever go away? In Bible class today, we did something a little different. We went back to the beginning of John’s gospel and started looking at select passages to discuss some things that Jesus did and how we can be like Jesus and walk in His footsteps. The students started a new course today, science, which comes right after lunch. Since I had forgotten to tell them ahead of time, they didn’t have a lunch with them so they read the first section of Unit 1 to themselves while Daddy and I had our dinner. Then I sat and listened to them read from that lesson until class time was over. Matthew came again and worked on the cupboards. We thought maybe he would finish up today, but this end of the cupboards was more of a challenge so he still has one small section to finish off. After the school students left, I lay down for nap; and after Matthew left and Daddy had come back from Matthew’s house where he had gone to check e-mails, Daddy lay down for a short nap. This afternoon, Judy came to prepare carrots and yam for our dinner tomorrow. I finished up lesson plans and wrote some math exercises on the chalkboard. Then I worked on the game lesson for Sunday school (the final lesson in the series) until the computer battery ran low. By then it was just about 5:00 anyway so I got supper on the table, and we sat down to eat. After supper, I bought some more carrots and some lemons from Kaipo, did the dishes, bought some yams from Nuandauro, finished up the game lesson in the Sunday school series, and proofread the completed set of lessons. April 16. Some rain during the night. A somewhat cool day, but no rain. Today was the fifth day with the horrible dead rat smell in the house. Therefore, during recess, the school students moved the bathtub and opened up the pitpit* wall behind the tub. Not only was there a decaying dead rat , but evidence of years of rat nest building in that area—rags, washcloths, corn cobs, toilet tissue, soap, and numerous other things. All was swept and gathered up and carried away. *Pitpit – a reed, similar to bamboo but smaller At noon, we asked the students to share our dinner of carrots and yams as we had quite a pot full. Science class followed dinner. After classes, Anna Jean stayed to prepare greens and onions, and Judy filled up the buckets with water for the laundry rinse tomorrow morning. As long as the generator is still working, we will wash clothes in the machine early in the morning. The machine is still filled with water for the wash cycle as it had been filled for Saturday morning, but the generator didn’t work that morning. Nap was late. Afterward, I cut up a young pumpkin and added it to the greens and onions. Then I set the pot of veggies on to cook. After that, I disinfected and cleaned the bathtub and swept and washed the bathroom floor. Had been wanting to have the girls do it by hand, but after today’s rat episode, I just used the mop and hot, soapy bleach water because it needed to be done NOW. After supper and doing dishes this evening, I printed out the next Sunday school lesson and the Bible memory reminders for Mike to use this coming Sunday. Shortly after that, four seventh grade boys (Uriah and Zechariah Erick, Jeri Jevin, and Stalon Maron) came up to see if we could help them with a drama. They are supposed to do a drama presentation in school on Thursday, and they did not want to do the kind of drama that the teacher suggested, so they asked to do something of their own. They want to do a drama on the death and resurrection of Christ. There was no way I could prepare a drama that quickly. The only thing I could think of to do would be to give them notes from the chronological teaching and let them read through and figure out how to make a drama out of them. So I hurriedly copied the sections on the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ and printed out a copy for them to work from. I hope it helps. We don’t even know for sure if these boys are saved, except perhaps Uriah who made a profession when Lewis was here in January 2017. Perhaps such a drama will help these young men as well as other students |
