August 2. Not quite as cool as the past couple mornings, but still a pleasantly cool morning. Spent more time on getting my prayer notebook set up. Then Daddy and I tried to get the narration recorded for the slide presentation. The recording was too soft, however, even though we had the volume turned all the way up. So we still don’t have a presentation with sound. Looks like we will just show the pictures and Daddy will read the script. (Well, we didn’t even get to do that because the overall timing of the presentation was way off after trying to work with it in this new computer. It seems that either the Lord or the Devil doesn’t want us to use this presentation.) By then it was close to lunch time, and Daddy and I decided to go out to Pizza Inn for the senior citizens lunch which is just on Wednesday. The parking lot was crowded, and when we got to the door, we couldn’t even get inside. So much for lunch at Pizza Inn. We turned around and came back home. This afternoon, I got our shopping list made for tomorrow. Then I installed an old print pack software so I could have more fonts in the computer, as well as the Type Stylist, a photo editor, card maker, and a few other things. I needed some other fonts so I could fix up our brochure which I had transferred to this computer from the flash drive. Every time I transfer something like that, the computer changes one or more fonts because this computer can’t find the ones in the original. After installing the program, I was able to revise our brochure. Then I scanned the little quiz booklet “What Do You Know About Papua New Guinea?” I couldn’t find it in any of my files so figured scanning it would be the easiest way to make a file so we can print out more. Tomorrow I’ll try to remember to print out a number of those two items to take with us on our trip this weekend. At 4:30, I started dishes and then had supper. Around 6:15, we left for church. Pastor Ogle continued teaching this evening on the ten commandments, starting with the fifth commandment ”Honor thy father and thy mother.” August 3. Shopping day. Went to WalMart first this time because Daddy needed to get the oil changed in the car. He dropped me off at the front door where I got an electric cart and started the shopping. When we were just about done shopping, Daddy started getting a migraine. He went to get a drink at the water fountain to take with some aspirin, but the water was turned off because of a leak. We had a case of small bottles of water in the shopping cart so we just opened one of those so he could take the aspirin. Then we went and checked out, and Daddy went to pick up the van at the auto department while I waited at the front door with the groceries. When I went to get into the van, a beautiful red rose was sitting on my seat. Thank you, Lord. From there we went to Mighty Dollar to get muscle rub and eye drops. Grabbed a couple other items while we were there. Off to Aldi after that for a few more groceries and then to Office Depot to get a business card holder. On our way home at last, arriving around 11:30. Put away groceries. Fixed Daddy a hamburger for his dinner, and some lima beans which he wanted yesterday, but I accidentally got peas out of the freezer instead and never looked closely at the bag until I had dumped them into the boiling water. After all, the bags looked almost the same. 😊 Worked a little bit on the missionary training course before nap. After nap, I printed out brochures and quiz booklets, and Daddy helped me fold them.

July 31. Went to bed a little earlier last night and woke up a little before 6:00 this morning. Got up and took my shower and washed my hair. What a lovely, cool morning God gave us! Around 62º. Had breakfast and quiet time. Worked more on new prayer notebook. Daddy went off to WalMart to pay the rent and get a few items, to the post office to mail the tax forms, and to the bank to cash a couple checks. I got journal notes ready to send off to Connie. Then it was time to make soup — vegetable soup this time. During and after lunch, I started researching various vitamin supplements to see what would be the best affordable brands to get. Then we had a nap, and afterwards, I finished my research, typed up the vitamin order for Daddy and me, and printed it out for Christy to order. The next order of business was to make activated charcoal capsules, a job that we have all been putting off for a good while, even after we got the capsule maker out and set it on the kitchen table. Oh, my! What a mess! I don’t mind making capsules, but activated charcoal? Yikes! Not a good idea. Especially with this new style capsule maker. There was black powder all over the work area and my hands before I was done. It took a while to get it all cleaned up. And it doesn’t easily wash off the skin. After that, as I was fixing myself a little snack, we had a phone call from Clara L. What a pleasant surprise! And what a joy to know that she regularly prays for us! “And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.” Genesis 2:15 August 1. Started laundry right after having my shower this morning since we had a 9:00 appointment with Dr. Cook. By the time I had had quiet time, had a smoothie to drink, and hung out clothes, it was time to go. I figured we wouldn’t be there long, and I would have more breakfast when we got home. Ha, ha! We didn’t get home until almost 10:30. Our appointments went fine, but we had lots of chat time as well since Dr. Cook wasn’t that busy today. After I had the rest of my breakfast, I worked on the prayer notebook, and soon it was lunch time. Was still a little bit hungry so had a cup of soup for lunch. This afternoon, I finished up one youth lesson and then did the next one which was very short. There are just three or four short lessons left, and soon that will all be done. Then they will have to be printed out and proofread. July 30. What a lovely, low-humidity day the Lord gave us today with a gentle breeze blowing most of the day. We never turned the a/c on in our bedroom today; and the fan wasn’t even turned on until late afternoon. Back to EBC this morning. Seems like it has been a long time since we were there with our church family, but I guess it had only been a couple weeks. Mrs. Surrett started a lesson on “What Does Your Husband Need You to Be?” She had some very good points, and that would be a good lesson for special ladies’ meetings in PNG. She covered two main points today—He needs you to be feminine, but not necessarily fashionable; and he needs you to submit to his leadership, yet be resourceful. In the regular meeting, Pastor Ogle preached on “A Man Like Peter” from Matthew 21, “A Celebration That Doesn’t Last.’ The theme was “You must do more than proclaim He is Messiah; you must live like He is.” The meeting ended right at 12:00 with the baptism of a young mother. Afterward was choir practice. This evening, we went to visit Zion Baptist Church in Gastonia again. Pastor Kuykendall and sister Carolyn were not there. Pastor came down very sick with pneumonia shortly after we were there last time, and it was then that they discovered he had some heart trouble. He is at home now, but still quite sick and Carolyn has been with him to take care of him. After the meeting, we had the privilege of signing a card that the church people were signing to send to him. It was a good meeting. Pastor Matt Mills, the assistant pastor, oversaw the service. They partook of the Lord’s table this evening, and the preaching dealt with the Lord’s suffering and triumph as the sacrifice for our sins. Pastor Matt’s wife sang “The Old Rugged Cross.” God’s people were very moved by the preaching and the remembrance of Jesus’ suffering and all He has done to save us from our sins. We arrived home somewhere between 7:30 and 8:00; and shortly thereafter, I got busy doing today’s dishes. July 28. Daddy had a dizzy spell last night as he was about to wash up before bed. He didn’t get to sleep for a long time so slept in late this morning. After doing laundry this morning, I spent some time starting to make a new prayer notebook. After that, most of the rest of the day was spent working on the missionary training course, finishing up the study of China by collecting some photos and starting the research on the Miao minority group of China. There is a lot of very interesting information. July 29. Let’s see, what did I do this morning? Made pancakes for Daddy’s breakfast. Did more work on my new prayer notebook. Prepared a bunch of thank you and thinking of you cards to take to church and put in mailboxes tomorrow. Fixed chicken and rice for Daddy’s dinner. Slept nearly two whole hours at nap time. Afterward, I set combs and brushes to soak, cleaned the bathroom, folded clothes, and did some writing in The Isles Are Singing. “And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” Genesis 2:7 The LORD God formed the man, that is, he fashioned him or shaped him as a potter fashions the clay. “Even every one that is called by my name: for I have created him for my glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made him.” Isaiah 43:7 “….I also am formed out of the clay.” Job 33:6b July 26. This morning, there was a thank you note to write and get put out in the mail and a birthday card to get ready to take to church on Sunday. Also finished making the thank you note I started yesterday. Just have to write a poem or something to put inside the card and add a personal hand-written note. Next Daddy and I finished checking John 5, which we had worked on several weeks ago, and started on chapter 6. It had been a while since we’d had time to sit down together and work on translation. There has been so much going on. At noon and after nap, I was looking through a stack of letters that Daddy had written to his mother between 1972 and 1982 to see if there was any information I could have (or should have) added to The Isles Are Singing. Made the shopping list for tomorrow and did up the dishes. Cooked myself a panful of zucchini and ate half of that with slivered almonds in it for supper. Yum! This evening we went to Nations Baptist Church. Several of their members were away so there was only us, a lady named Mary, Pastor Pritchett and his wife, and four young men. But it was a blessing to fellowship with those folks and hear the word preached. Pastor Pritchett really cares about those young men and has good rapport with them. He talked with us for quite a while after the meeting. He has been to PNG and would love to go back. We are hoping to have him come preach to the people in Owena some time. “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.” Genesis 1:27 God only made two kinds—male and female. “And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female…?” Matthew 19:4 “But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female.” Mark 10:6 July 27. There wasn’t much shopping to do today. Only needed to go to WalMart, and that didn’t take long. Decided to go to Hobby Lobby and see what I could buy with my gift card. Wandered around there for a while, but I only spent 95 cents buying some stickers for Connie. All the stickers were 40% off today. Stopped into Bargain Hunt to see if the sheet set we had looked at before was still there, but it wasn’t. A phone rang right by Daddy’s head while we were looking. Hmmm! Somebody must have set their phone down and forgotten it. Daddy took it up to the front while I kept looking at sheets. They were thankful that he had picked it up. We forgot to get bread at WalMart so stopped at Mighty Dollar but they didn’t have any. So we made a quick stop at Aldi for bread. Daddy’s sandwich “skinnys” were on sale for only 85 cents today. Great! Thank you, Lord. Another quick stop at Office Depot where Daddy ran in to give a business card with our address written on it to Jeremy. At last we headed home, arriving around 11:15. Daddy went out to Subway for lunch. This afternoon, I proofread and sent off to Connie another chapter in The Isles Are Singing; completed the writing of another chapter; and wrote a poem to go in the thank you card I had made yesterday, cut that out, and glued it into the card. I started dishes right after supper, thinking I would get them done before Jeremy came. He got off work early, however, and I was only about half done with the dishes. Went back and forth between dishes and trying to work with Jeremy on getting sound with the presentation. Nothing seemed to work until Jeremy downloaded drivers for the microphone. It seems like we’ll be able to make things work now so Daddy will try again sometime soon to record with the microphone. Jeremy stayed quite a while and chatted. July 24. Charlotte day. Left the house a little before 9:00. Didn’t seem like we were at Trader Joe’s very long, but there was no time for Connie and me to go anywhere else before her appointment with Dr. Schulman. Daddy went to WalMart Marketplace and picked out a few things and waited there until we came. Then I looked at meat, and Connie picked out some mark-down chicken, and we headed home. Made a stop for gas at a BP station along the way. Daddy had a 20 cents off per gallon coupon that we had received from Kmart. I slept most of the rest of the way home. Arrived home a little before 1:00. Had lunch and nap. Yep, I had a nap on top of the shut-eye I had in the car. This afternoon was busy in the kitchen—washed and cooked spinach, made sweet potato soup, made easy pizza. Had fun with a couple of the sweet potatoes, one of which looked like a whale, and the other like some kind of fish, or perhaps a caterpillar. Took pictures of them before I cut them into pieces. “14And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: 15And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so. 16And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. 17And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, 18And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.” Genesis 1:14-18 July 25. Daddy and I decided to go to Forest City today to have a look at J’s and also find some other discount or thrift stores. So after laundry was done, we headed out. J’s was quite a place. They had so much, and a lot of good things that we could use. We were in J’s for about an hour and a half. The hospice thrift store was right close by so we went there next and spent about an hour there. I was thankful to find some plain color jumpers and a few blouses. We were there for about an hour, so by then it was time to head home. Maybe another day, we can go to some of the other stores. After we got home, I made Daddy another easy pizza -- that didn’t take long. Also put away the food and pureed some of my soup for my own lunch. This afternoon, I printed out a thank you note and worked on another thank you note hand made. |
