September 11. Another very cold night and cold morning. Praise the Lord, it did get a little warmer today although we are still not getting enough sunshine. But we are thankful that there is sufficient sunshine and wind to dry the clothes. Mike preached in lotu this morning, continuing his teaching on the purpose of the church (or the work of the church). He did a good job. There was hardly anyone there this morning. Many people have been staying in their garden houses at night and working their gardens in the daytime. Amos was not there. He is still dealing with a serious boil (?) on his hand—extremely painful. Dallas came limping to school today and looks like he has a bad boil on his foot. His foot was quite swollen. We gave him some salt to take home for soaking his foot, and some aspirin for pain. The students finished their math review lesson today. I don’t know why they are having such a hard time. A lot of their problems, it appears, have to do with just not thinking. They will probably be glad when they have finished this chapter. We will go over their papers tomorrow, and they will have their test on Friday. They all did well on their English worksheet. And they finished reading chapter 3 in history today. There won’t be time for a test before they come back to school after a week’s holiday. After that, we’ll do another chapter in science. It was nice to have a bit earlier nap today. After nap, I got a math test made up. Then we had time to do some unpacking before supper. There were quite a few dishes to wash again this evening. Unpacking has uncovered some extra things that need washing before use. When dishes were done, I proofread the math test and put it on a flash drive for printing. Started writing in my journal. Wrote an e-mail to Beth. Printed out a teacher’s copy of the math test. Did some unpacking. “1O give thanks unto the LORD, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever. 2Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy….” Psalm 107:1,2 September 12. Thank you, Lord, for a bit warmer day today. And thank you for all your help and strength throughout the day. This afternoon after nap, I wrote an e-mail. Then I started doing a little organizing so we can do more unpacking. Didn’t have time to do much though as I needed to sort and wash a big bunch of greens that Sakias had brought today. When that was done, I peeled and mashed some boiled eggs to make egg salad for supper. Then we had supper; and right after supper, I put the kettle on to heat bath water. While the bath water was heating, I cut up the greens with some onions and uxai, seasoned them, and got them ready to cook as soon as bath was done. Had bath, and put the pot of veggies on to cook. Then proofread the e-mail I had written earlier and put it in the outbox. Also made another e-mail with a few pictures to send to C&C. Printed the students’ math tests for tomorrow. Did the dishes. Had a snack. Cleaned out the rest of the box that we had started unpacking last night and organized my extra shoes and a few extra clothes in the gray tote and all my yarn in the box I had emptied. “8Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men! 9For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.” Psalm 107:8,9

September 9. Very cold last night and this morning. The house was warm for just a couple hours this afternoon — warm enough for me to wash my hair — but started cooling off by supper time and is quite chilly again this evening. Anna Jean and Mike were the first two here for school so Daddy had them move the footlocker into our bedroom so we could unpack that this afternoon. Daddy bolted down the toilet this morning. Hooray! He’d been waiting and waiting for his drill to come so he could drill a hole for the bolt. Then this afternoon after nap, he started working on the toilet in the spare bathroom. So there was no water to use in the afternoon. (The old toilet was cracked just above the base for a long time and not too long ago had broken apart.) Then Daddy ran into problems trying to install the new toilet, so he sent word up to Tomas and asked him to come down and help. They finally finished the job just before 6:00. But they still weren’t able to turn the water back on because they had to glue the pipes together, and the glue has to dry for 24 hours. We are thankful for Amos’ family being willing to carry water for us early this evening. The three girls and their mom and dad each carried a bucket of water so we have five buckets of water to last us through the day tomorrow. Since Daddy had turned the water off before I got up from nap, I had a bit of a hard time washing my hair. Thankfully, there was still some water in a couple of the buckets to use until more was fetched later. But I had to dip water out of the big bucket into the little bucket that is light enough for me to carry and then dip it from there into the basin for washing my hair. Added hot water from the tea kettle which had been filled up in the morning. So that job took a little extra time. After that, I had to write tomorrow’s lesson plans and put a few math review exercises on the chalkboard. Since Daddy still wasn’t done working on the toilet, I went ahead and unloaded the footlocker by myself. After supper, we put the footlocker in the kitchen and loaded it up with the grocery supply that was in two totes by the tall cupboard. Bathroom supplies then went into one of the totes, and the other tote is still empty. It was a blessing to find a new tablecloth, so I put that on the table while the dish water was heating. By the time dishes were done, it was already snack time. And now it is bath time. “1Praise ye the LORD. O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever. 2Who can utter the mighty acts of the LORD? who can show forth all his praise?” Psalm 106:1,2 September 10. Very cold all day today. Sunshine for only a short period in the afternoon. We never did open any windows in the schoolroom because the cold winds were blowing outside. And I never shed jacket or sweater all morning. Now I am sitting here all bundled up, and even have my head covered with the hood of my jacket. The weather has been dry for a week or so now, but little sunshine. Lots of clouds nearly all day, and hours of fog in the mornings. The students had a good bit of independent work to do this morning, so Daddy and I started unpacking one of the totes. We never did get a chance to finish, however. I took time to peel and cut up carrots to cook for our dinner and to make meat patties, too. After school, the students each took a bucket and carried more water for us so we would have enough for our needs until about 5:30 when Daddy would turn the water back on. Both of us over-slept at nap time so the afternoon was too short to accomplish much. I cleaned the chalkboard, wrote lesson plans, and put some math reading problems on the chalkboard. Then we had supper. Heated bath water and had bath directly after supper before the house got too cold again. I was so thankful to have the water back on and have running water again. After that, I wrote up another supplementary English lesson on present tense verbs. Then I washed the dishes; and, for some reason, there was quite a stack of them this evening. Afterward, I put the English lessons on a flash drive so I could take them to Daddy’s computer and print them out. The printer continues to give us headaches. This time a dark black streak ran all the way from top to bottom of the pages. There is a brand new toner in the printer too. But there goes a lot of ink. Have no idea what caused it, but took the toner out and cleaned it again, and it did the back side of the pages fine. Since the black streak doesn’t make the pages unreadable, the students will have lesson sheets with big black streaks. “Blessed be the LORD God of Israel from everlasting to everlasting: and let all the people say, Amen. Praise ye the LORD.” Psalm 106:48
September 8. It has been a very cool day. We enjoyed our pancake breakfast. And having read about all of Christ’s sufferings the past few days, I read with joy Matthew chapter 28, “He is risen.” A bit later, I wrote tomorrow’s lesson plans as I hadn’t done that yet. Wrote some words on the chalkboard for the students to write the “ing” form. Made sure the supplementary math lesson was ready so I can get it printed out tonight. It was quite late before anyone showed up for lotu. Daddy taught the last discipleship lesson in the first book, and Tomas translated. There were four people who came to the altar to pray. Amos preached the second service, continuing the preaching on holiness, sharing how he daily seeks after holiness. They had the second meeting only twenty minutes after the first as most everyone wanted to attend LBC’s (Liberty Baptist Church) baptismal service down at Owedaveq — Javin, Tukila, and Nuanda baptized 33 people. After nap, we did a little more unpacking and organizing. Had a bath right after supper this evening as the house was already getting chilly. Did dishes after that. Finished organizing some office items. Wrote in journal. Printed the supplementary review math lesson.
September 6. Praise the Lord for a mostly sunny day after some rain during the night. First thing after breakfast this morning, Daddy put the Aqua Rain together and filled the top tank with very hot water as the instructions read. After the hot water all went through, he was to dump out that water and then we could put in cold tap water to start filtering for drinking. However, after supper this evening, he discovered a big puddle of water on the shelf behind the Aqua Rain. Water was leaking out from all around the spout. He had tightened the spout as tight as he could by hand as the instructions said. There was still about a quarter of a tank of water to filter through, but he went ahead and emptied all the water out anyway so we wouldn’t have more of it leaking out. Then he sterilized an adjustable wrench and tightened the spout a bit tighter than he could do with his hand. This time he filled the tank with cold tap water; and, Lord willing, that should soon be ready for drinking. It will be a blessing not to have to use the filter pitcher and a couple saucepans full of boiled water each day. Philemon and Lynn came somewhat early this morning too, before I had eaten breakfast. I didn’t want to eat in front of them, but wanted to have my breakfast before school started so asked them to excuse me for eating. They have come up with an idea for a New Year’s Eve program and wanted to know what we thought about it and to ask if it would bother us too much if they stayed until midnight. They would start around 6:00. It would be a time of singing, testimonies, and games. They didn’t plan to have preaching; but since New Year’s Eve is on a Tuesday, we suggested they have one of the pastor’s preach a short message to take the place of Wednesday morning. Most people aren’t going to want to show up Wednesday morning after being up until midnight. They had some good ideas, and we told them it would be okay with us for one night if we lost a little sleep because of the noise. Now they need to run their idea by the pastors and deacons. Also Wenke brought a large stalk of bananas this morning, which Mike helped me hang up on our banana hook to keep them away from the rats. "A" called later in the morning to make sure that we had gotten all our cargo. That was very thoughtful of him to do that. This morning, Sunny and Mike gave their testimonies of salvation which were a blessing to the rest of the class. Then we had a little bit of time left to look at more of the lesson on Galatians. Spent music class practicing “Marimari I Win Tru Long Sin.” The students seem to be getting their parts pretty well now. There was just one note that Mike is having a little trouble hitting right on, but he seemed to have gotten it by the end of class. In math class, we started with chalkboard review of adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing measures, both English and metric. Then we went to the chapter 3 review lesson in the book. Instead of having them do the lesson for grading, I am having them do it for class practice. There really isn’t even enough practice in it so I am working on making a supplementary lesson as well. They need to get a better handle on some of these exercises before they have their chapter test. They had a spelling quiz in English class (which I haven’t even graded yet), and then we started working on a supplementary English lesson dealing with present tense verbs. In history, we read together about teakwood, and then they read another section on their own before going home. While they were reading independently, Daddy and I had our lunch. Sunny filled up the washing machine after school, and Mike and Dallas chopped firewood. Daddy and I had our nap while the two men were still working. After nap, I cut up a popo (papaya) for our snack. Then I started getting journal notes ready to send to C&C, but discovered there were some already ready. So I started the e-mail to which I attached the journal notes. Then Daddy and I started emptying the white icing buckets that we had packed with cargo. I wanted to use them for storing trade items so I could get the trade items out from under the kitchen cupboard so I can cover the bottom shelf of the cupboard with linoleum so I can keep our pots and pans, baking dishes, and other kitchen items in that cupboard. So now we have four buckets of trade items—one for packets of noodles, one for salt, one for sweet treats, and one for soap. Two other buckets were used for some of our own food—one for packets of sugar and one for packets of milk powder. It took me a while to do dishes this evening as I had to wash and rinse all the parts to Daddy’s stove-top coffee percolator and also had the blender and all its parts plus the large pressure cooker which I used yesterday evening for making and pureeing soup, besides the other dishes we had used today. When I finished dishes, I came back and finished the e-mail to Christy and Connie so that is ready to send. Then I had a sponge bath and then a snack. And now I am writing journal notes. “33I will sing unto the LORD as long as I live: I will sing praise to my God while I have my being. 34My meditation of him shall be sweet: I will be glad in the LORD. 35Let the sinners be consumed out of the earth, and let the wicked be no more. Bless thou the LORD, O my soul. Praise ye the LORD.” Psalm 104:33-35 September 7. Praise the Lord for His help, strength, goodness, and merciful kindness today. Had pancakes for breakfast this morning, leftover from this past Sunday. Then it was time for prayer lotu. Quite a few ladies there this morning, but only a handful of men. And almost everyone left in a hurry this morning for some reason, before we even had a chance to greet them. Shortly afterward, Daddy started the generator, and Sunny washed the clothes. The Lord gave us a sunny and windy morning to dry them. Then she had a cup of coffee and some peanuts before sweeping the floors. While the generator was on, I wrote an e-mail to Carrie W—at long last. I am really trying to get caught up on e-mails. Afterward, I made a cup of coffee and then measured the bottom shelf of the east end of the kitchen cupboard and cut a piece of linoleum to fit. It was not an easy task for an old lady to get down on the floor and fit and trim the linoleum to get it laid evenly. When that was done, Daddy and I did some more unpacking until dinner time. After dinner, Daddy went out and got the clothes. I wanted to go out in the sunshine for a while, but my throat has been super sore today so I dared not go out in the wind. After he brought things in, I made the bed, and we had our nap. This afternoon, I spent time organizing things that had already been unpacked. Then I measured the other end of the kitchen cupboard and cut and lay linoleum on that part of the bottom shelf. Praise the Lord, now that cupboard has a nice floor and is ready for storing more kitchen things. Daddy got out the set of pots and pans and those are now in the cupboard. It will be a blessing to have other pans to use besides the two one-quart saucepans and the one very small frypan that we had been constantly re-washing and re-using throughout each day. Occasionally I cooked a soup or other meal in one or both of the pressure cookers as well. Daddy cut some plywood for shelves under either end of the long desk area. After that we unpacked one of the file cabinets and another box or two. Then we had supper, and I did dishes. Wrote in journal. Worked on notes for Galatians lessons. Had a quick sponge bath because it is much too cold tonight for a long bath. Had a snack. Practiced keyboard. “1O give thanks unto the LORD; call upon his name: make known his deeds among the people. 2Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him: talk ye of all his wondrous works. 3Glory ye in his holy name: let the heart of them rejoice that seek the LORD. 4Seek the LORD, and his strength: seek his face evermore.” Psalm 105:1-4
September 4. It was raining when we got up this morning. Would it be a day for hanging clothes in the house? Praise the Lord, the weather had cleared up by the time Judy finished washing clothes, and she was able to hang them outside. Most of them were dry before noon, and the rest were dry shortly afterward. It looked like storms were brewing this afternoon; and, yes, by evening we were getting some good rains. The clouds and fog mingled with rain just before the sun finished setting made the sky so pretty though—various types and layers of clouds with different shades and hues of light shining through them. Philemon preached in lotu this morning, his first time to preach. He did well, preaching on the need for holiness, using Hebrews 12:14 as his text, and then going to Colossians chapter 3 for characteristics of holiness seen in the lives of those whose affections are set on things above. Daddy tried and tried this morning to get in touch with "A" who wanted us to get back with him today about having our cargo taken to the hangar. Daddy finally got hold of him just when he returned from the hangar after having taken our cargo down. :-) There is supposed to be a flight tomorrow which can probably bring in part of our cargo, but it will be bringing in plywood for finishing the medical worker Jonathan’s house. We were hoping to get it all in on Friday on the coffee shuttles that were scheduled for Matthew to get coffee out with the subsidy from CIC. But suddenly SIL says there is no CIC money left. SIL did come in this afternoon, however, to pick up the rest of Danny’s coffee. Christopher was on his way back from Menyamya empty. Daddy went up and talked with him. This afternoon, I made sure the supplementary English lesson was all in order for printing. I was going to practice keyboard, too, but the schoolroom was too smoky—the Lamari valley was just full of fires. Not good for the eyes. I also tried to put the Pidgin translation Bible file, which is a word file, into the new computer to see if it would bring it up in Libre Office and I could work on it in there. Yes, it did bring it up in Libre Office. No, I could not work on it in there because it changed all my word art and text boxes and the whole formatting. When Daddy was at the airstrip, he had asked Christopher if SIL can install Microsoft Word, and he said he believes the tech center can do that. So Daddy may have to make a trip to SIL to get that installed. I have dozens of files in Microsoft Publisher and Word that I cannot use otherwise. This evening, I wrote an e-mail to the girls and Daddy sent that along with a file with a couple pictures. Then I put the supplementary English lessons and the new Bible lessons on a flash drive to print from Daddy’s computer. I was thankful that it was a flash drive I started using only for transfers and not for storage because I put it in the new computer first to see about getting rid of the virus that computer said was on my other flash drives—the “key” that has gotten on all my flash drives since using them in this ACER. But after I put it in there and agreed to their getting rid of the virus, that flash drive would not work at all, not in any computer. So I found another one to use for transfer and just left the “key” on it. It doesn’t really seem to bother anything so far. Don’t know what in the world it is. I finally got started printing, when black blobs appeared evenly down the page toward the right side—about four blobs to a page. A bug had apparently somehow gotten on the plate. So I had to remove the toner cartridge, clean it, and put it back in. Finally got the printing done. It just seems like one thing after another, slowing down or hindering whatever work we try to do. We wanted to move ahead with translation checking; but so far have not been able to do that. Seems like we are in a long, hard battle with continuous computer problems and other problems. We are looking forward to the victories, to seeing what great work God is going to do when the battles are won. Yes, it’s very frustrating sometimes, but God keeps telling us to sing. So sing we shall. Praise God! “1A Psalm of David. Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. 2Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits….22Bless the LORD, all his works in all places of his dominion: bless the LORD, O my soul.” Psalm 103:1,2,22 Note: We have never gotten a virus from files Mom has sent us nor does this site block the upload of any of their files. The ACER has an older version of Windows, so perhaps something in the files is just not compatible with Windows 10. September 5. What a day it has been! I am thankful to be sitting down for a while now. It is 7:00 p.m. I would like to take a bath, too, but getting off my feet for a while comes first. We woke up to rain again this morning, and lots of fog. Daddy kept in touch with SIL, letting them know the weather status here. Today the students started learning John 3:16 in Pidgin and we started a new lesson, going now to Galatians for a while. They are doing quite well now, getting their parts for “Marimari I Win Tru Long Sin.” (Grace Greater than Our Sin) While they were working on their math lesson, I peeled and cut up a pumpkin and put it in the big pressure cooker— the beginning of soup. A false alarm interrupted their math lesson when the plane came and I sent them up to the airstrip to help with our cargo. Our cargo was not on the first flight so they were back in about five minutes, empty-handed. Someone else’s cargo came on the first flight. The pilot said our cargo would be on the second flight. So the students finished their math lesson, studied their spelling words, and then read their history lesson. While they were working on those projects, I washed, peeled, and cut up kaukau to go in the soup. Then we started reading the history lesson and discussing it together, and just finished the first half when the plane returned. It was already about 12:30 so we ended school for today, and the students went up to the airstrip again. This time they brought down cargo and helped bring in the cargo that the other people had brought down. Dallas gave out the chocolate wafers to those who brought cargo. Praise the Lord, every piece of cargo arrived safely. Before the students went home, they helped us organize the cargo and store it here and there. Then they each had another chocolate wafer and headed for home. Sunny wasn’t feeling well yesterday and today so I sent aspirin and Echinacea home with her. Daddy and I managed to fit lunch in, in between all the goings on. We warmed up and divided up the rest of the soup after the students left, and then we had our nap. First thing I did after nap was brown some ground beef to add to the new pot of soup, and also added seasonings and more water. Put that on to cook so it would be ready to puree in the evening. While the soup was cooking, I got lesson plans written and put some review exercises on the chalkboard. Daddy found the copy of our list of cargo items so we were able to quickly find the boxes that had vitamin supplements. I was out of nearly all my vitamins and getting to the bottom of the few that were left. So I was very thankful that the cargo came today. We also were very thankful to get the Aqua Rain (water filter), and we opened that so I could wash it with the clean dish water. By then it was supper time. Daddy went and started the generator, and I put supper on the table. While the dish water was heating, I got everything ready for pureeing the soup. Washed the Aqua Rain and the other dishes. Pureed the soup. And now here I am sitting down and trying to make my brain work. :-) Wrote in journal and started a supplementary review lesson for math. After sitting down a while, I had a snack, then a bath. Afterward I worked more on the math lesson. Praise the Lord for His strength and help today and for giving good weather and safety for the plane. The plane actually came in a third time (mid-afternoon) and brought plywood for the medical worker Jonathan’s house. He took a plane load of coffee out each time. “Bless the LORD, O my soul. O LORD my God, thou art very great; thou art clothed with honour and majesty.” Psalm 104:1
September 2. Last night before bed, our water supply ran out. Thankfully, we did still have some drinking water in our pitchers, a little bit of clean bath water, and a little bit of water in the little white bucket. But not enough water all night for flushing the toilet. Early this morning, Daddy saw Eunice outside and asked her if she would get a bucket of water from Tomas’ house, if he had water. He didn’t have any either so she went and got a bucketful of water from the creek. And after all the students arrived for school, we gave a bucket to each of them and sent them off to the creek. They had already gotten out of hearing range, however, when we discovered that the water was starting to come. We figured Tomas must be working on it. Sure enough, he had been. The students had seen him, and he told them we should be getting water soon. The two young ladies arrived back first with their buckets full so while we were waiting for the men, Judy helped me hang up the bunch of bananas that her mother had brought before school time. Even though we got a late start on school, we went ahead and finished up the Bible lesson we started last week. And we took a full class time for music as well so they could start learning a new song “Marimari I Win Tru Long Sin” (“Grace Greater Than Our Sin”). In math class, they just finished up the lesson they had been working on for a while. It was a hard lesson for them—multiplying and dividing compound measures. They started a new spelling lesson after that and then read a few pages in their history book before their school day was over. While they were working on math, I peeled and cut up some carrots and put them on to cook for dinner. And while they were reading their history lesson, I re-warmed the carrots and warmed up more of the kaukau and chicken gravy. Then Daddy and I had our dinner. After nap, I finished tomorrow’s lesson plans before starting to write an English lesson on how to form and use the present tense of verbs. Then Daddy and I went outside for a little stretch and some fresh air and sunshine. Praise the Lord for giving us a warm and mostly sunny day today. While I was out, I took a couple pictures of a flower that is growing out there and also took down more giant spider webs from off the generator shed and the gardenia bush. After we came back inside, I practiced keyboard until supper time. After supper, I wrote an e-mail while dish water was heating. And when dishes were done, I transferred pictures to this computer and got a good start on editing them until the Kodak program locked up. So I ended that task, went for a sponge bath, and had a snack before coming back to the computer. Wrote in my journal, finished editing the pictures. September 3. The house was warm this morning so Daddy didn’t start a fire in the wood stove. But the fog was thick and hung around a long time, making the house damp and chilly. Eventually he started a fire to get the chill off the house, but he didn’t keep it going long as the fog eventually cleared away and the sun shone. Only two students were on time this morning, but I started class right on time anyway. There was lots to do today. First they studied for their Bible quiz, and then they took the quiz. Everyone got 100 on the quiz plus bonus points for writing John 3:16 in their own language. While they were studying and while they were taking the quiz, I sorted and washed greens to cook later to go with tomorrow’s meal. Took a short break and then we worked on learning “Marimari I Win Tru Long Sin.” They had a surprise quiz in math class, and it was very easy. The two men did very well, but the two young ladies didn’t think good. Most of the rest of the class was spent with review exercises on the chalkboard, except for a few minutes at the end when they were introduced to their next lesson—distance, rate, and time. After going over the spelling lesson together, they started on the exercises, and I warmed up dinner so Daddy could eat. I needed to be with them for history class so we could read and discuss the current section together. After school, I re-warmed the rest of the food and ate my dinner while Judy was filling up the washing machine. Also had time to clean the chalkboard before she was done. This afternoon, I cut up the greens and cooked them, finished writing lesson plans, wrote math exercises on the chalkboard, and worked on the supplementary lesson for English, teaching how to form and use the present tense. This evening, I wrote an e-mail to Dr. Tom while the dish water was heating. Enjoyed a nice bath as soon as I had finished doing dishes. Then wrote in my journal and finished the English lesson on present tense verbs. |
