October 6, 2019. The Lord gave us a lovely sunny morning and brought clouds and cool winds in the afternoon. By 3:30, there was thunder and some sprinkles of rain, but the house became as dark as it usually is around 6:30. I thought I might sleep in later this morning, but was up at 6:00. That was okay because there was a lot to do. Made a few pancakes first and ate a couple of them for breakfast. Read Bible and prayed while pancakes were cooking and while I was eating. After breakfast, I got busy gathering ingredients for soup as I didn’t have anything left for dinner except for a little bit of greens. Chose lentils, rice, onion, and pumpkin. Was just getting ready to cut up the onion when Matthew came to the door. He wanted some verses translated for his preaching today. I set aside the soup-making and translated the verses. Finished cutting up the onion, and got the pumpkin cut up after that. Added the seasonings and a little more water and set all on to cook. While that was cooking, I took down the laundry that was hanging in the schoolroom and got everything folded and put away. Matthew preached both meetings today since Lewis and Tomas are both gone and Amos is not up to preaching yet. His text was Matthew 10:40-42. His title was very broad — some of God’s commandments. He only covered verse 40 in the morning meeting. There were not very many people in lotu. Shortly after the preaching started, I realized that I was getting quite warm, and I saw that half the congregation was sleeping. It was then that I noticed that no windows were open so I motioned to a couple people who were still awake to open some windows. In the afternoon, Matthew covered verse 41 of Matthew 10 and had a good cross reference to the widow of Zarephath in I Kings 17. After the meeting, I talked a while with Mata and Amos. Amos said his hand is not very painful right now, but Kelly wants to cut the hand again because another sore is forming on it. I encouraged Amos to give a better try with soaking in salt water. Afterward, I deleted some e-mails, looked up some study notes on Matthew 10:40-42, and wrote in journal. After shutting down the computer, I put it on to charge. Then I felt hungry and didn’t know what to eat so had a pancake. Betty came to the door to tell me about the trim all falling off the house on the east side. I remembered that I had heard something fall this morning, or yesterday, I forget when, but I never got around to going outside to check and see what it was. The trim all along that side of the house is almost entirely off, and the bamboo wall is coming apart so it needs to be fixed. Betty said that Timothy would like to get some trees and fix it for us. After a while, Amos and Mata came with the medicine that he has been taking — some antibiotics and panadol. So I gave him some aspirin to try instead of panadol to see if that will help, along with the salt water, to reduce the swelling. For something to do while the computer was charging, I got out the two brown flat sheets, cut about a foot off two sides of one of them, and got one side pinned together so I can make the sheet wide enough for our bed. Then it was supper time. After supper, I began proofreading the Galatians notes that I had just completed. Then I put dish water on to heat, hoping to wash dishes and also get a wee bath before Lewis called. However, dishes took longer than I expected so I didn’t get my bath until after a nice chat with my husband. After bath, I finished proofreading the Galatians notes and then made the student copy. Did a little sewing before bed, starting to add a piece of sheet to one side of the top bedsheet. “I have inclined mine heart to perform thy statutes alway, even unto the end.” Psalm 119:112

October 4. A mixture of sunshine and clouds today. Late this afternoon, I could see the front across the western sky, and there is rain and a thunderstorm this evening. MAF came in this morning, probably checking out a pilot. SIL came in twice this afternoon for coffee and passengers. After nap, I graded papers, wrote in journal, and made a new journal since this one is just about full. Right after supper, I did dishes and then had a sponge bath before the evening got too cool. The air started cooling down quickly when the rains started. When Lewis called at 7:00, it was still raining quite hard, but when he called back about fifteen minutes later, the rain had slowed down sufficiently so that we could enjoy a good chat together. After talking with Lewis, I had a snack and then spent more time working on Galatians notes. “How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!” Psalm 119:103 October 5. A mixture of cloudy skies and short periods of sunshine today. Rains started in afternoon. Right after I got up, I cleaned up the bathtub a bit, put the plug in and some laundry soap, and started the water running. It was a wee bit yellow after the rain, but would be fine for washing clothes. While the water was running, I put my phone on to charge and started getting my breakfast. Then I put a load of clothes in and started plunging them to save the girls some time so they could get them hung out not too long after lotu. Matthew had charge of prayer lotu. There were about a dozen people there again. Three of the ladies swept the floor before leaving the meeting room. Judy and Anna Jean came in to take care of the clothes. They were all ready to wring out since I had plunged them several times before lotu started. After the dirty, soapy water went out, I suggested that they use the full buckets to refill the tub so they wouldn’t have to wait a long time for the slow running water to come through the tap. That turned out to be the best idea, and they were able to get done quickly and get the clothes hung outside. Later, I refilled all the buckets. All the water is still somewhat yellow, but I wanted to get the buckets filled before more rain came which may possibly make the water dirtier. When they finished hanging out the clothes, they swept the floors. While they were working, I finished my prayer time, had a cup of coffee, looked over the next science section. Later, I photocopied the science quiz I had written out and also made copies of a missionary story for them to read this week. Then I took apart and cleaned a picture frame I had found for my horse painting. The picture frame was a bit too big so made a matte frame to go around the picture. I also put the glass on the outside of the frame so it won’t touch the picture and ruin it. Stuck the glass on with double-sided mounting tape and bordered the inside edge of the frame with beads to cover the tape. Now the picture is ready to hang as soon as we get the bedroom walls finished and painted. After lunch, I went out and brought all the clothes in. Who knows whether it would rain or shine? There was hardly any sunshine or wind this morning so none of them were dry, but most of them had a good start. Hung most of them in the schoolroom and spare bathroom and a few hang-up items in the bedroom. After nap, I washed my hair. Then, before writing in journal, I sent the e-mail that I wrote yesterday evening to Cilla, and then worked more on Galatians notes. When the battery warning came up, I shut down and went and cleaned off the extra bedroom shelf which was cluttered with little bits of this and that. I kept putting off cleaning that shelf as I couldn’t figure out what to do with all those little things. Finally found places for everything, but don’t know if I’ll remember where they are when I need or want them again. Didn’t have to do dishes this evening so put bath water on while I was eating supper and had bath as soon as the water was hot. “Thy testimonies have I taken as an heritage for ever: for they are the rejoicing of my heart.” Psalm 119:111
October 2. After the early morning rain, a cloudy day, and some light rain off and on yesterday, I woke up to a clear, chilly, no-fog morning. A dry, warm day, though, brought tons of smoke from the other side of the western ridge. Heard distant thunder mid-afternoon, and clouds began to darken the skies. Lotu started and finished early. There were only 13 people present, and they all must have wanted to go off to work somewhere as they all went out right away after the meeting. Matthew preached this morning on John 3:3. about keeping ourselves pure because of the promise of Christ’s coming. Since we started school about 8:15, I told the students we could do art class after the other classes. They finally got to start on their new math lesson today. It took a couple days to teach “greatest common factor” and for them to get it fixed in their minds. Didn’t want to start on the next lesson until they had a pretty good understanding. In English, we read more from Matthew chapter 5, and they started the written lesson to correspond with what we had been doing orally. In science, we read and discussed together the section they had read independently yesterday. Then they were ready for art class. I had them trace a picture of a boy’s face and then begin coloring it with colored pencils, trying to teach them how to do shading. They just had time to color the boy’s skin today. Next week, they will color his hair, eyes, and shirt. While they were busy with some of their work today, I washed and cut up a couple potatoes and a small and a large kaukau. Put those all in a pan with a little olive oil, butter, and salt, and put them in the oven to bake. A yummy dinner, along with some leftover pumpkin. After nap, I practiced keyboard, wrote a sample present tense story on the chalkboard, wrote in my journal, and started an e-mail to C&C. When the computer battery ran low, I shut down the computer and put it on to charge. Then I gathered together all the trash, took it outside, and burned it. When I came back in, it was time for supper, but I didn’t have much to eat. So I got busy making some tortillas. I am so thankful to have a rolling pin now. The tortillas can be rolled out much faster with the rolling pin than they could be with a ketchup bottle. After I got a couple tortillas on cooking, I peeled and mashed a boiled egg, and added mayonnaise, mustard, salt, and curry powder. Also cut several slices of cucumber and peeled those. By then several tortillas were ready so I spread one with the egg salad and topped it with the cucumbers. A tasty supper. As soon as the tortillas were done, I put dish water on to heat. Took a little time to pray while the dish water was heating. Washed the dishes. Put bath water on to heat. Had a quick bath. By then it was 7:00 and time to talk with Lewis — the best part of the evening. After that, I wrote more in my journal and finished the e-mail to C&C. Also worked a bit more on the next Galatians lesson. “The law of thy mouth is better unto me than thousands of gold and silver.” Psalm 119:72 October 3. More clouds this morning, but still lots of blue sky and no fog. More fires in the west again, on the other side of the Owena ridge; but billows of smoke filled the sky and came this direction. My eyes have not been happy with all this smoke. This afternoon, there was thunder again far off in the northeast, and clouds building up in the east. Just before 5:00, the rains started coming, and we’ve been having some hard rains off and on for a while. While the students were doing some independent work this morning, I put a coat of varnish on my horse painting. Put a second coat on later in the day. Most of the computer time this afternoon was spent trying to send the e-mail I wrote yesterday to C&C. I had a connection for a long time, but could see that nothing was happening. Finally, about the fifth time, e-mails came in and the one I wrote went out. Praise the Lord! I have to do the sending and receiving in the afternoon while it is still light in the schoolroom. There is no light in there to use at night. Had a little time to write in journal and work on Galatians before battery went low. Turned off the computer and connected it up to the inverter to charge. Then went and started fixing my supper. Since I didn’t need to do dishes this evening, I put bath water on while I was eating supper and had bath early while the house was still warm. After that I worked a bit on notes for Galatians until time for Lewis to call. Sadly, our chat time was shortened when heavy rains came again. He called back several times, but I didn’t hear the call until the fourth time. We were able to talk a couple more minutes as the rains were slowing down. But then they came pounding down upon the roof once more so we had to say good night. After that, I finished making tomorrow’s lesson plans and trying to decide how much of the current science chapter to hold the students accountable for. It appears to be quite a complicated unit, a lot of it even difficult for me to understand. Afterward I continued working on notes for Galatians lessons. “O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day.” Psalm 119:97
September 30. A beautiful day. Deep azure blue skies. Hardly any clouds, except for bunches of small puffy white clouds above the farthest mountains. Mountains were visible miles away to the west. Tonight the skies were still very clear and there was a sliver of a moon It has been a busy day. The plane came a little after 10:00 to take Lewis to town. The students helped carry his cargo up to the airstrip. That shortened their math class a bit, but it didn’t matter. They all did well on their big history test today. After they left, I opened the box and small packet that came on the plane today. They contained mostly supplements with a few other nice things like amaranth, almond slices and pecan pieces, and almond butter. Then I started working on tomorrow’s lesson plans, but Caroline came to the door with a half dozen eggs. Praise the Lord! There were only four eggs left. Now there are ten. When she left, I had my nap, and after nap I washed my hair. Started an e-mail to Martha since today is her birthday, but hadn’t finished it when the battery ran low. Finished it this evening, but am not getting a connection for sending it. Put the computer on to charge. Several more people came to the door between then and 6:30 this evening. Tonka brought some food and wanted oil and orange yarn. Nuka stayed a good while and shared some burdens on her heart so I could pray for her. I also took time to pray for her before she left. Erovi came and wanted to bring firewood, but I asked him to wait until Lewis comes back from town. Severah came and wanted some salt. In between those times, before it got too dark, I did get a wee bit of time to practice keyboard. Tried to finish writing tomorrow’s lesson plans, but didn’t get time to do that until later this evening. Lewis called at 7:00, and I was happy to talk with him. We only talked about twenty-five minutes though as I still had dishes to wash and other things to do. After those two jobs were done, I had a snack before finishing Martha’s e-mail and then writing in my journal. “Thy testimonies also are my delight and my counsellors.” Psalm 119:24 October 1. The beautiful clear sky and bright stars that were visible before bed last night had turned into clouds and rain before half the night was over. It was still raining when I got up this morning and continued to rain until going on 7:30. The morning was busy, not just with classes, but with interactions with other people. Nuandauro came and asked for salt and oil, and wanted to know what I needed. The only thing I really needed was greens so I gave her the salt and oil, and she went back to her house and got greens. I also gave her the yarn I had set aside for her. She said she would bring me some potatoes later. Gibson came and wanted change, but I didn’t have change. While the students were taking their math quiz, Yanahdo came and wanted yarn. She must have seen Nuandauro and heard that I had given her yarn. I did have some yarn set aside for her also. She came in and sat down, and I went and got the yarn for her. Then she wanted me to read to her from the Bible which I was happy to do. The students were still working on their quiz so I didn’t feel rushed. After my nap today, a teenage girl came with six eggs. Praise the Lord for sending more eggs. Work on the computer was next, first writing a few notes in my journal while I was waiting for an e-mail connection. Praise the Lord, there was a connection and both e-mails sent. Then I worked on Galatians notes until the battery ran low. After that, I put the computer on the inverter to recharge, erased the chalkboard, had a snack, and started writing tomorrow’s lesson plans. Then I sorted and washed the greens Nuandauro had brought this morning. Supper time next. Right after supper, I put dish water on to heat and cut up the greens with some onions in the pressure cooker. Added water and salt and put them on to cook. The dish water was ready so I put bath water on to heat in its place. When I was done washing dishes, I got everything ready for my bath, and by then the bath water was hot. Was thankful for a refreshing bath. Started setting up journal notes for Connie while I was waiting for Lewis to call. He called later this evening because he had been invited out for dinner. It’s always good to hear his voice and helps bring joy to the evening. Put the computer on the inverter to charge back up while we were talking. After we talked, I had my evening snack, finished the journal notes, and transferred pictures to the computer. |
