August 6. I was thankful for a hot shower before bed last night and for a good night’s rest. Woke up at 6:00 this a.m. It was already light out. Got up and dressed and had quiet time. Breakfast with the Tylers around 8:00. Off to church around 9:30. Church started at 9:45 with a song and pledges to the flags and the Bible. Then we went to the fellowship room where the people had coffee to drink and cakes to eat while the Sunday school lesson was being taught. Daddy was the Sunday school teacher this morning. We had hoped to show our old presentation, but didn’t have anyone to work the equipment. So Daddy gave an overview of our years of work in PNG. In the main service, Lewis preached on the Missions Miracle from John 6. I guess there were about 30 in attendance. Lovely people. We enjoyed meeting each one and talking with several of them personally. After the morning service and time to talk with people, we put away the display items, loaded up the van, and, following Pastor Tyler’s directions, headed for another seafood restaurant. Met for dinner there with the Tylers and their grandson Charlie and two other couples from church. I decided on decaf coffee to drink. When the waitress brought the coffee, I asked for some cream. She said she would bring some. She took our orders, and I ordered clam chowder. Waited and waited and waited, but no cream. And no dinner either. (Those who ordered buffet were already eating and had finished long before the meals were served to those who ordered from the menu.) I finally got up and went out to walk around a bit to get the circulation going in my legs. I guess the waitress came by while I was gone, and they reminded her that I wanted cream. Shortly after I came back in, she brought the cream, but by then my coffee was cold. Asked if she could warm it up, but she said she would just bring me another cup. Also said that our orders were just about ready. She brought another cup of coffee, but it was filled to the brim. Where was I going to put the cream? The coffee was much too hot to sip down so thought, as soon as my chowder comes, I’ll use the spoon to dip out some coffee and make room for cream. We continued to wait and wait. At last our orders came. My coffee was still quite hot. I dipped some out into the cup of cold coffee, added the cream, and also added some ice cubes from Lew’s glass of iced tea so it was cool enough to drink. In spite of the problems with lunch, we enjoyed the fellowship. Pastor Tyler said they had never had to wait like that before. After dinner, we headed back to Tyler’s house where I enjoyed a nice, long nap. Daddy woke me up around 4:00; and around 4:15, we left for Carteret Baptist Church pastored by Rick Aldridge. They meet in a store front in Newport. Arrived a little after 5:00 and set up our display and also got the presentation (the old one) ready to show. Talked for a while with Pastor Aldrige while we waited for people to come. There were about eight to ten people in the evening meeting. After the presentation, Daddy told a bit more about our ministry. Then he had me sing John 3:16 before he did the preaching. His message was about “Why Do Missionaries…?” and he gave scriptural reasons for the areas covered in the message, such as, learn the language and culture, teach the people to read and write, teach chronologically, translate the Scriptures. Most of the people stayed around after the meeting to fellowship with each other. I enjoyed chatting with 89-year-old Bro. Adams, an intelligent gentleman with a very alert mind. Also chatted a while with Nancy and Tammy (Mrs. Aldridge). Such sweet people! We had really enjoyed our day. On our way back to the Tyler’s house, we stopped at a Food Lion to pick up some things to snack on. It was 9:00 when we arrived back at the Tyler’s. Enjoyed a bowl of ice cream and another little time of fellowship before heading to bed.
